My partner and I were there, too, and we both could see that this was an incredibly special show for Patty. She seemed a little nervous at the beginning, but by the end, and especially during the encores, it was clear she didn't want this evening to end. The Ryman really is magical. I've been to a few performances, and there's always a moment when I look around the crowd and it's as if we're part of every audience and every performer who's ever been there. If I remember right, even Patty acknowledged the ghosts :) - --Nan Blomgren At 12:05 AM 10/13/2003, AkaSlowpoke@cs.com wrote: >In a message dated 10/12/03 6:05:42 PM Central Daylight Time, >Danalee7@comcast.net writes: > > A Kiss In Time captures 12 songs recorded on January 30, 2003 at the > > historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN. Hey Everyone - I just thought that I would share this quirky little story with you - I'm hoping some will appreciate. About four months ago, I emailed a music producer of HBO's highlighted sitcom "Six Feet Under" - explaining that I really thought that one of Patty Griffin's songs (Long Ride Home) would be of prime choice to put in the show/soundtrack...that it had expressed and triggered an emotion that was revealed throughout the show. I did it as a shot in the dark, thinking that no one would even read such an insignificant email from a girl from Chicago. I actually had kind of forgotten about it...until this morning when I received the attached email. I think this is great - even if they don't end up using any of her amazing songs - it still puts her music out there. Although it would be incredible if someday I heard one of her songs on the show...I'll keep you guys posted on that. The music in 'Six Feet Under' is thankfully not chosen by a board of directors. In fact, one of the reasons most programming at HBO is so much stronger than that of the networks is because we are all given an enormous amount of freedom in our creative decisions. Music is generally pitched by my partner Gary Calamar and myself, although a lot of the great ideas in the show come from the writers, producers and editors. We all share in the process and the best ideas generally make themselves obvious. It's a wonderfully collaborative process. I'll dig the Patty Griffin album out of my music collection and check out the track you're suggesting and re-acquaint myself. Thanks for the suggestion. I hope you continue to enjoy the music in 'Six Feet Under'. We certainly enjoy working on the show and are really happy with how many artists we've been able to introduce our audience to. I only wish there had been more of everyone, but definitely more of Patty. Here is her set list at the Chicago leg of the tour: Mad Mission (Thanks to the lovely Maggie Reidy and I, who jointly slid our big bags of M&M's across the stage before her first song--nice to meet you, Maggie!) Be Careful Rain Stolen Car Tony Mary (encore) Prior to Patty's encore, the group also did the Backstreet Boys cover, which though comical initially and producing may laughs from the audience, was also quite sweet in it's own right due to their rendition of it. I don't think I've ever experienced such a beautiful and collusive gathering of songwriters/performers. It was lovely and inspiring beyond words and I will be reaping the benefits for quite a while, I believe. Hope the hangover spares me tomorrow--the red wine enticed me. Peace to all of you. ~Kara Hetz Chicago ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #258 *********************************
