The first time at Kate, I was sitting in the river midday in the 100 degree heat when I could hear his version of Dylan's Lay Down Your Weary Tune at his workshop wafting thru the trees and I knew I was in the wrong spot. Today I remembered some of his other songs which had impressed me at those shows and so I got his latest Cd - Traveler-with tomorrow's lunch money:) priorities, right! I love 6 of the 12 songs, have not listened to the rest- had those on repeat all the way home as I knew I had to listen specificallly to them. That is what is so great about these music fests with lots of singers I don't know- I always find new ones. The air was aromatic:) I think it was Tim who commented that it smelled pretty good from up at the stage..... it was foggy mostly and chilly as well as the day went on- 4 layers for me. I am starting to recognize some of the dancers off to the side of the stage from the previous fests- as well as other people that I have noticed. Same crowd I guess. I found my concert buds - Paul who told me today that he is a lurker right here on this list!- he has the tribute Cd and mentioned that he loves Corrine's voice- his friend from other lists, Phil, Mara who I met at Kate, Bill who I also met at Kate, Susan and Linda- Freight & Salvage concert buddies. No sign of Evan altho I looked all day for a tall guy with a baseball cap- I guess that is not exactly specific enough in a cast of thousands- lots of baseball caps there. Tomorrow I'll wear my wide brimmed straw hat with a red satin ribbon on it- no one else will have one- maybe you can recognize me if I cannot find you- Jaimie hopefully will find me- I would love to find you guys. I am otherwise ordinary and inconspicuous with jeans and sunglasses and brown flannel shirt as today proved since Evan did not find me either. My Sedona colored patterned blanket will hopefully be to the left of the main stage as up front as I can get it. I dropped the 5 cds I have been weeding out on the Patty Griffin list on people there- 3 were total strangers that told me they love Patty- really? here.... I had 2 left over and saw Warren- the man who sponsored this free festival - and gave then to him at the end of the day- some things you cannot buy you know. He doesn't know who she is, but if he listens he will- and maybe next year- she'll be here! Gillian Welch-I heard the first 5 songs Ain't no one in this world knows my name then over toTim O'Brien- I dream about you through the day, I toss and turn at night, should I go, or should I stay, on the outside looking in.... and , Lay down your weary tune, lay down lay down the song you strum and rest yourself 'neath the strength of strings no voice can hope to hum-- remember that one ? Dave Alvin I wish I had enough money to buy an election Greg Brown I want my country back- yeah! and Anna Belle's dead- RIP - -- my comment here- what a brutal song, as funny as it seems in the beginning. Ricky Scaggs quoted Brisco- whoever that is: got time to breathe? Got time for music. on break- heard them playing overhead my Jackson Browne and David Lindley Tikki Torches at Twilight- did not expect that! Kevin Welch hey now, hey now, gonna go up to the mountain for to find a little peace. last- Steve Earle and the Dukes- but blue grass Dukes not the hard rockin' ones I heard twice this year. I believe that one fine day all the children of Abraham will lay down their swords in Jerusalem. Amen, Dana in Berkeley ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Oct 2003 06:36:34 +0000 From: Danalee7@comcast.net Subject: MM: Fri Bluegrass Fest review While I am at it- here is my review from yesterday's concert. Stay tuned for Sun review tomorrow! Dana in Berkleley ______________________________________________________ Well, I was running late and so decided to drive over and did survive that---- Bay Bridge at noon with no trouble- so proud of me right? I followed Evan's instructions and found myself over there, found the parked cars and busses-parked a ways away- followed the music and found myself right up in front of the stage, but also in the midst of several thousand middle school students- Music Appreciation Day I guess. Pretty awesome when you think of it- they behaved very well, even sat down. Ok, they were jibberjabbering the whole time, but still in the background was the music of Joel Raphael and Eliza Gilkyson singing Woody Guthrie songs, Jimmy LaFave, Kevin Welch and Michael Fracasso- all exc too. It was the Tribute to Woody Guthrie Show which if it comes near you, you really should try to catch it- very good. After the show, I trotted over to Haight St to Amoeba and lo and behold, not in the folk, country or bluegrass sections, but in the rock section- Innocence Mission- I picked up Befriended and have heard it twice through now. I just love that Karen Peris's voice. Very soothing and calming for my rush hr drive home over my very most fave Bay Bridge- made it safely too. Twice in 1 day! Thank you for the recommendation! Guess what else I found at Amoeba? A beautiful full color Fillmore concert poster for Emmy Lou and B&J from a couple of years ago- $25- one of those gorgeous ones the Fillmore is famous for and has plastered all over the walls. When I go there I feel like I am in an art gallery with the ghosts of concerts past everywhere. I elected to spend my lunch money for the weekend on the IM CD- lasts longer than lunch, right? I can eat breakfast at home and bring PB&J instead- and left the poster there in the back of the 3rd row to the left of the poster counter, if any of you wants to grab it tomorrow. Hope to find a couple of you- look for me- blond hair and sunglasses- brown flannel shirt and jeans, brown concert blanket. It was cold and foggy, so bring extra layers. (If it can't be read at their online site...I'll be happy to type it out if anyone interested.) Stealing a few quotes from reviewer Daniel Gewertz: "This was simply one of the best shows of this reviewer's life." "Griffin won for best dressed, best hairdo (upswept) and best anecdote (recalling her telephone operator job at Harvard). Her yearning, torhcy vocals were also the night's emotive best. She's more full-bodied as a singer and her stage manner has grown too. "Mary" sported the night's finest group harmonies." - -Denise C. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 05 Oct 2003 15:02:26 +0000 From: "Charles Ott" Subject: MM: Keswick Show Review!! Review of Glenside, PA show at the Keswick Theatre Got my Patty fix, yeah! I think I may have turned her on to Patty, or I guess you can say Patty turned my friend on to her, she was very impressed. And, of all the times I've seen her in these two years, her voice was just amazingly beautiful. the thing that struck me at tonights show was how natural it flows from her. Her projection was crystal clear. As others have said, there were little stories and long song explainations, and kidding around, of course. Shawn and Patty seemed to click, Mary said the two have been shopping all down the East coast. Patty was wearing a little grey knee length skirt and matching short waisted blazer, with flaming red stockings that stopped just above her knees. She said she was going for the school girl look, but shawn said it was more Nurse Ratchett. She looked very pretty, goin for her own unique style. Shawn is a wiseass and very funny! her performance was intense, sweet voice, fast hands. Catie Curtis was Dars replacement, Dar had a show in Princeton, I believe. Catie was great, a little gravely voiced, nice guitar playing, nice writing. She reminded me of Kathleen Edwards, a s/s from Canada. Mary's songs were all a little similar sounding for me. She really played within herself, which is great for a few songs, but you're performing, you gotta kick it up a notch. I kept wishing she would just start flogging the guitar and rocking out, but Patty did that for her. Which brings me to Patty's set list: A Flaming Lips song - can't remember the name Moses - she started to play 'You Never Get What You Want', but couldn't remember the words. You Are Not Alone - I was so thrilled to hear this live!! Flaming Red - The best! She was just incredible, so into it (and so was I and everyone else!) Icicles Falling - Very pretty Mary - - best song of encore, as always. It was such a treat and surprise to hear some live LWG stuff!! Great show, except for some lady behind me with a voice that had it's own strong projection, only not pleasent to the ears. All talented ladies, but Patty stole the show. All the people I went with thought so. Looking forward to Carnegie Hall in a few weeks for my next Patty injection! By Daniel Gewertz/Music review Sunday, October 5, 2003 Boston, MA ``Is this becoming an episode of `This Is Your Life?'' ' asked an amused Mary-Chapin Carpenter. It almost was. And it was Boston that brought out the show's autobiographical bent. Of the four remarkable folk-pop singer-songwriters on this round-robin, acoustic concert tour, two had lived in Boston as their careers were born: Patty Griffin and Dar Williams. And in the '80s, Shawn Colvin became a true folk-star in Boston while remaining almost unknown in New York, then her home. Williams' first gig anywhere was opening for Griffin at Christopher's, a Cambridge restaurant. The night was filled with hilarious anecdotes. Among the daffy stage patter, Griffin and Williams paid tender tribute to their slightly older role-models, Colvin and Carpenter. The off-the-cuff girl-talk - about shopping, music, the Red Sox, motherhood and various bodily-fluids - was overlong but charming. Yet the real riches of the two-and-a-half hour show were the songs. This was simply one of the best shows of this reviewer's life. All four were in superb voice, all four were compelling in solo format, and Carpenter's skills as a supporting guitarist proved substantial. ``Saddle up, Chapin, we're goin' in,'' said Colvin before the two dove into an agile, two-guitar version of ``Shotgun Down the Avalanche.'' Despite the Wang's gilded finery and the 3,000 fans, the night often seemed akin to a coffeehouse song-swap, and the ditsy chatter was close to a coffee klatch. Carpenter and Williams steered clear of a ``greatest hits'' selection, with Carpenter having the guts to focus on new songs, even in the wake of one of her mates' beloved hits. The new ``Girls Like Me'' was a stunning example of Carpenter's ability to portray herself as an ordinary woman while exhibiting extraordinary artistry. The metaphoric ``I Am a Town'' glowed. Williams' only real oldie was ``The Baby Sitter's Here,'' and what more could anyone ask of a story-song? It made the audience laugh out loud and literally cry. Colvin was teary onstage. Griffin won for best dressed, best hair-do (upswept), and best anecdote (recalling her telephone operator job at Harvard). Her yearning, torchy vocals were also the night's emotive best. She's more full-bodied as a singer and her stage manner has grown, too. ``Mary'' sported the night's finest group harmonies. Colvin seemed pretty similar to 1989, her solo strengths still evident. ``Cry Like an Angel'' was her pinnacle. You could write thousands of words about this genre-defining show. But one will suffice: superlative. - --------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 5 Oct 2003 11:51:02 -0400 From: "Jim Murphy" Subject: MM: RE: Re: Carnegie Hall (was: Keswick Show Review!!)
