Subject: MM: The FAB FEM FOUR Tour in Boston!

Warning:  Unedited ramble ahead.

I was lucky enough to see two of my absolute favorite singer/songwriters 
share the stage in Boston at the Wang Center.  The added bonus was getting to see 
Mary Chapin Carpenter and Dar Williams along with them!!!  I love them 
also...but as long-time members of this list know...I'm crazy about Shawn and Patty. 
To see them on stage together is a dream.  On the stage...Patty and Shawn were 
the bookends...with Chapin and Dar seated in the middle.   Patty and Shawn 
claim they are totally coordinated with their wardrobe color choices each show 
without talking about it beforehand.  Pat and Shawn are very stylish gals.  

There really isn't any order to this review of the show.  Instead it's more 
of an overview  with some special moments highlighted.

Since all have strong ties to Boston and New England....it was a night filled 
with references to Somerville, Harvard Square, Boston, North Hampton, Passim, 
UMASS and EMERSON College Radio, Newbury Street shopping, etc.  This made it 
a very personal show for us.  So many little references...like Shawn saying 
that this night's show was feeling like a review of their histories.  She stated 
that it all started here for her ...and launched into "Cry Like An Angel" 
with the girls singing along...and then Patty telling Shawn that she could recall 
exactly where and when she first heard that song on the radio...."I was in my 
apartment here in Somerville...painting a bookcase orange"....to which Shawn 
joked...."and it made you want to paint it black instead?"  Local references 
were a big theme throughout the night...which made it even more special.

Big thanks to Chapin for putting this show together.  She is such a humble 
and generous artist.  It was so much fun just to watch her laughing during the 
night.  She sang a few new songs but her stand out song for me was "Someone 
Else's Prayer".   
Dar had some really beautiful newish songs too.  One dedicated to another 
local gal (and a new mom) Catie Curtis who was in the audience. (Also in the 
audience: Bill Morrissey, Dar's husband and mother-in-law, and Patty's parents.)   
Dar's standout song for me was "The Babysitter's Here"...with Chapin, Shawn, 
and Patty watching, laughing and tearing up.  Such an entertaining song to 
hear Dar perform live and  watch the others react to.  (I don't know why but I 
always envision Phoebe (of Friends) doing a great version of this song...either 
that or Dar doing "Smelly Cat".)

Another of the interesting local-themed stories when Dar mentioned that when 
she was starting out and lived in Boston -her first show  was to open a show 
for this local Harvard Sq. waitress who was about pursue music full-time.  That 
waitress was Patty Griffin.

The girls talked about their shopping experiences and asked each other what 
they bought today and about wardrobe issues.  And it was at this point that 
Chapin showed her purchase...to the delight of the Boston audience.   I'll leave 
that to your imaginations.  The girls (who referred to themselves as a version 
of "THE VIEW"  then decided that The Red Sox would win the World Series but 
feared what would happen to the world/planet if that actually ever did happen.  
Patty said something about the Apocalypse while Shawn offered a more positive 
outlook of World Peace. It was a very funny exchange.  

And I believe that we have the title of Shawn's next album...thanks to Patty. 
 After a funny story about Shawn's daughter Callie ...Patty told Shawn she 
should title her next album..."Farting in English."   (I won't relay the actual 
Callie story here in case it's being told at the other shows on the tour.)

Shawn's standout song...well that's just too tough to call.  I'll go with the 
extremely beautiful version of "Cry Like An Angel" that had all the girls 
singing along.  But I also really loved  "Shotgun" and "Matter of Minutes".  
(That would leave the Neil Young cover and Wichita Skyline.) She didn't play 
anything new (except a Neil Young cover that *I* hadn't heard  her play before) but 
it didn't matter.  As soon as she picks up a guitar and starts playing she 
reminds me of why I am an avid fan and have followed her career all these years. 
 She immediately reassures me that it is  and ALWAYS will be worth the effort 
to make it to see her perform live every time she's around....even if she 
never has another new song to play.  She is a master guitar player.  Her voice is 
beautiful.  Her songs get better with age....and so does she.  Shawn is 
looking better than ever.  She's a babe.  No doubt about it.  Colvin is just the 
kewlest chick on the planet.

I always find her banter interesting and funny.   She and Chapin together are 
like the Beavis and Butthead of bunch.  Really fun to watch.  All the girls 
are funny...but Shawn is the class clown or instigator.  (Though I think it was 
Patty who pushed Chapin do her imitation of Julie Andrews.)

And then there was Patty.  WOW.  She is so powerful.  I never see so many 
dropped jaws in an audience as I do when Patty performs.  The minute she opens 
her mouth...she has you mesmerized.  She opened with a gorgeous version of 
"Tomorrow Night". She looked absolutely gorgeous...as always.  Patty's stand out 
songs:  ALL OF THEM!  Seriously...all of them. (Tomorrow Night, Poor Man's 
House, New song -Letters From Home?, Truth #2, Top Of The World, Mary.)  Pick 
one...any one. You can't go wrong.  She blows me away each time I see her. I leave 
her shows in awe of her talent.  No exception here.   Patty was so into 
everyone's music and almost forgot it was her turn to play after Shawn finished.  
They all seemed to really be enjoying themselves.  And it was obvious they all 
respect and appreciate each other's talents. 

Oh...almost forgot that Back Street Boys or NSync cover ("I Want It That 
Way").  So funny...but SO good at the same time.  That was one pop song I could 
not get out of my head when it was all over the radio.  Now I'm not as 
embarrassed to admit it.  ; )



I'm envious of all of you who will be seeing the "FAB FEM FOUR"  tour in your 
area soon.

Small addition to the review:  Shawn also played "Trouble".  I think it was 
her first song ...definitely another highlight of her set. 

Also, yesterday both The Boston Globe and The Boston Herald newspapers 
previewed the show and one included an interview with Colvin.   I don't have a link 
handy but you might be able to access those articles online.
