Fading memory & shows running together are a problem.Set list : Darkness on the Edge of Town Be Careful The Long Ride Top of the World Encore Ten Million Miles 2nd Encore Mary Seated stage right to stage left , & playing in that order ; Mary , Shawn , Patty , & Dar. It was great to hear "Darkness" for the first time. I got it confused with "Racin' in the Streets" early on. "Be Careful" & "The Long Ride" were very good , with excellent harmonies from what Patty jokingly referred to as her back-up singers on Long Ride. "Top of the World" & "Ten Million Miles" were top-notch. As Mary introed the last round , I was feeling the need to visit the men's room , due to a few drinks before the show & an aging bladder. Determined I could make it thru the encore , & when the lights didn't go afterwards , I assumed they would be coming out for another. As soon as they came back on stage , I got up. As I was passing the closed exit doors , I recognized Patty's speaking voice , & popped my head in to see her picking up the guitar. Almost missed "Mary" with great harmony again from the "back-ups". Patty was selected to do the 2nd encore , which was only 1 song. Noticed Mary's red shoes , which seemed similar to a pair I saw Patty wearing one time , & looked to see if Patty was wearing her red shoes. She was. Patty later mentioned that it was unplanned , but that their shoe colors were red-black-red-black. Mary suggested that it was a cosmic coincidence , which made me feel very cosmic/ karmic b/c my Flaming Red boots are red flames on a black background. Quite a lot of chatter & stories between songs , as Mary said a few times that the show was going too fast, all of which Patty seemed to enjoy immensely. Haven't been entertained that much between songs since Eliza opened for Patty. Mary & Shawn seemed to know each other very well & their banter was most frequent. Everyone held their own up there , but I liked Mary the most after Patty. I saw her at the Landmine concerts & liked her , but mentioned a certain degree of sameness in her songs. While her range of style isn't that great , every one is delivered in passionate , sensuous manner. On the last round , she & Shawn went into a song that I recognized , but wasn't sure of what it was. Early on , a lot of people in the audience started laughing. I couldn't see anything funny , & wondered what I was missing. After awhile , I realized it was a "boy-band" song. Later found out that it was "I Want it that Way" by the Backstreet Boys. Never liked it much with those whiny voices , but decided that it's an excellent composition , & their treatment of it was very good. Would have liked it better if they didn't exaggerate some of the vocals for comedic value , but I think that made it the hit of the show. One of the things that I think makes Patty great , is that as sad/depressing/ morbid as some of her music is , there's nary a whine to be heard. Some people seemed to be put off by it being a boy-band song , but I wouldn't care if it's a Barney song as long my ears like it. You are the reason I've been waiting all these years Somebody holds the key Steve Winwood "Can't Find My Way Home" Performed by Blind Faith Don ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 12:08:38 EDT From: ShmephSasso@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Central Park I attended the songwriter's show in central park on Sunday and nearly fainted when Patty announced she was going to sing a new song from the album she is working on. I'm not sure if anyone else has heard this before, but I was not expecting it at all and so was THRILLED. It was called Falling Icicles and was absolutely divine. The rest of the show was wonderful as Mary C.C. and Dar are two of my favorites as well. Shawn Colvin was good, I new her the last going in, but I felt she had a bit of a strong personality compared to the other three. Other Patty songs included Tomorrow Night, Poor Man's House, Top of the World, and the encore... Mary. Steph ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 12:37:03 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Foxwoods MMers , Left State College at 11AM , & it was as much an ordeal as any trip I've taken. Blemished my perfect record by not picking up Dana ( pronounced the same as Donna ) from Berkeley in New Haven. Intermittent hard rains & fog , bad directions , missed turns & miscommunications plagued me the whole way. Found myself 50 miles afield after following my last direction. Revised plans to pick her up at the motel in New London where she was staying , but she wasn't there when I arrived , & I assumed she had left. After a 20 min , tortuous drive in the resort to park , had a hard time finding the theater , & got in line around 7 , worried about Dana , who I thought left before me. She showed about 1/2 later. She was out getting M & M 's when I got to the motel. After all that , we get in to find that the entire front & center section was reserved for "VIPs" . You know , those folks who are more important than the rest of us. There oughta' be a law ! At least with reserved seating , if they hold the best seats , you can decide whether or not you want the tix that are available , but with GA you should rightly expect to be up front if you put your time in line. A number of rows on the side were also reserved , behind the first 2 rows , & between my venting about the reserved seats & indecision we lost the chance for the 1st 2 rows , & ended up about 6 rows back on the stage left. Set list : Tomorrow Night Making Pies Icicles Falling Truth # 2 Encore Mary "Tomorrow Night" was very good , with Patty doing some excellent scat during the instrumental bridge. It almost sounded like she was saying something , & I imagine that some folks who didn't know her were confounded b/c they couldn't make it out. "Making Pies" was also good , & I always like to hear "Icicles Falling". I was impressed with her playing & vocals on "Truth # 2" , one of the ones that I usually like more with the band , but again , it seems that her vocals are a notch better w/o the band b/c the song is more dependent on them when she does them solo , & I think it makes her more focused. Her playing was also very rhythmic & focused. "Mary" very good again , with excellent harmonies from the her back-ups : ) The Backstreet Boys cover was again the hit of the show , & I imagine it will be included in the rest of the shows. I was hoping that they would do 5 rounds before the encore b/c of Mary saying they were going too fast during the first show , but no luck. When they came back out , Patty said they were under strict time limits , so there would only be one song , "Mary" again. Hmmm. Seems the other ladies know a good thing when they hear it. Don't recall any more specifics , except that Dana ran up to give Patty a little bag with a card & some M & M's in it after the encore was over , & they were bowing. Patty seemed delighted to get it , & she was the only one to be offered anything. Her name is Aphrodite And she rides a crimson shell And you know you cannot leave her For you touched the distant sand With tales of brave Ulysses How his naked ears were tortured By the sirens sweetly singing Eric Clapton/Martin Sharp Performed by Cream ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2003 14:02:33 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: The Miracle in Central Park MMers , The miracle ? Threatening weather for the last 2 days. Don't think I went more than 2 hours w/o a hard rain since I left State College. A number of times it started drizzling , & a few times the wind came up & it started darkening. Usually a sure sign that a hard rain's a-gonna fall , but we made it 5-6 hours w/o getting soaked. Headed out from New Haven with Dana , her daughter Jane , & Jane's daughter Adora. Got on the highway , & thought it was going to be another ordeal , as the highway was closed for 6 exits. Luckily , Dana & Jane were familiar with the area , & we found an alternate route that was probably faster. I would have been lost w/o them , & may not have made the show. Got there in time & we were joined by Lisa Zwick in line. Found reserved seats for VIP's ( ? ) again. First 4 rows center. Didn't make much difference tho , b/c of barriers in front of the stage , no one was very close. Set list : Poor Man's House Mad Mission Top of the World Tomorrow Night Icicles Falling Encore Mary Very happy that Patty was mixing up her set list so much. "Poor Man's House" was outstanding , & got what I think was the best response from the crowd for the 3 show tour as far as Patty's songs go. Always good to hear "Mad Mission" in spite of Patty changing a line that must have escaped her. "You're so afraid" instead of "You're cold & scared". Had a little smile on her face when it happened. Maybe Dana's M & M's the previous night inspired it. The rest of the set was consistently good , with Patty again doing the one song encore. She seemed a little embarrassed about being chosen to finish every show , but said she can't complain. Up until today , I had considered Dar's performances a little behind that of Mary's & Shawn's b/c of her tendency toward novelty/amusing songs. Most of my favorite music is serious as a heart attack. But her last 2 were very good , & brought my perception of her up to same level of the others. A little disappointed that Shawn didn't do "Sunny Came Home" , a song that I like very much , & no doubt the biggest hit between the 4 of them. The 4 of them were all excellent , as far as compositions , vocals & performance goes. Of course , I like Patty a lot more. I think her compositions are better , & her voice seems to have a vibrancy beyond that of the other 3. Had my CDs stolen the last time I was in NYC , so the high point of my day was when I got back & found my car was still there , not broken into , & the wheels were still on it : ) Got on a tear a few weeks ago & did 35 compilations , none of which would play in my car CD player. Fixed what I thought was the problem & did even more last week. Seems that about 1/2 of the new ones aren't working either , so part of my ordeal from State College was that I didn't even have good music to fall back on. My Eric Clapton comp was flawless though , & I listened to it a lot on my way back home. I was in such a good mood b/c of the great shows & great company that those guitar licks just felt like heaven. My feelings have never been more mercurial. One minute it would be raining hard , with poor visibility , traffic all around & my CD would be skipping , the next I would be on dry roads with no traffic & clear music coming out of my system. One thing I forgot to mention was that Patty was getting some distracting feedback on her sibilants in SC. Didn't notice it on the others , but could be b/c I wasn't as focused. Don't think I'm ever more focused than when Patty is singing live. I'm guessing that very few noticed it b/c I didn't for awhile. It took me some time to figure out what the distracting sound actually was. As was the case when I saw some of her openings for Emmylou , I felt disappointed that I wasn't going to all the shows. I may try to catch some more in addition to the Pgh show. It's about time people start asking for a portion of their money back, and demanding to be somehow reimbursed for the hours of their lives that they just wasted standing in line for nothing. :-( At least if you're with Don or Dana, you're with good people. General Admission should be General Admission people! Or maybe with these shows they could put a **General Admission** display up with asterisks & a disclaimer that it's a "Very Special GA show for those who are so important that they don't have to stand in line for the good seats. If you're not deemed to be important, you're screwed". Anyway.. I'm glad to hear that Dana could make it out to the east coast for some shows. Despite the bad weather, it sounds like it was definitely a good time seeing Patty!
