[Rach2414@aol.com] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 01 Sep 2003 22:46:43 +0000 From: danalee7@comcast.net Subject: MM: Strawberry Music Festival I am forwarding my post to the Strawberry list with a few added comments for you all who know what I am talking about. Patty was so beautiful last night- she closed the festival with Mars rising in front of her over the Sequoia trees of Yosemite. She also faced a 7000 person crowd of mostly folks who are into bluegrass big time and frankly never heard of her- with a small bunch of exceptions from what I could tell by my survey over the previous 4 days. Enough folks remained for her set but many left for home as it was 8:30 Sun eve- and had children with them or perhaps wanted to leave to avoid Labor Day traffic today. Still, I was happy with the response she rec'd- we did our best yahooing too- overall- understanding that it was a bunch of first timers. Her voice was right on and with the exception of Flaming Red- she had to show em she could rock a little :) we know that but the crowd didn't- she did her softer ballads, my kind of Patty music precisely. She also did a song I have not heard before- don't know the title- it had a line in it about ice falling in the dark- very lovely- it will be another chill giver- got to hear it again- hoping for a copy of the concert from a girl who camped next to me, that you know I captured and would not let her go until she fully heard 4 songs before the concert- Not Alone, Top of The World, Mary and Long Ride Home- She got hooked I do believe! Mad Mission was represented there, Paul from Fremont- a lurker who I also roped into listening to Patty and he got it bad after seeing her live- and Steve from Southern Ca- a 6 month convert- who saw her last night for the first time- We snagged him a front row to the left seat- he had to have it! I don't know if anyone else from our list was there- and darn, I forgot the M&M's- so she would know. Cheers- hope you all get to the S/S concerts coming right up! I'll be at Ledyard, Central Park and hopefully San Francisco and Santa Rosa. I am wondering how people took Patty Griffin- she is my most fave of all fave singers ever- I loved her- it was maybe the 20th time I have seen her since '97. Most people that I asked ahead of time if they knew her music, gave a blank stare and I was concerned that the audience would dissipate on her- it is after all a bluegrass based bunch of folks there. Lots did leave, but the audience was full enough and altho her reception was much cooler than that for Alison Krause, it was warm, considering the new crowd in front of her. {I was gonna say virginal, but thought better of it:) I thought her concert was different from others I have seen, it is a different experience when she has her whole band there- she will play guitar on some songs then, but can concentrate on the singing more with the band there. Doug does a good backup job for her- he has been with her since Flaming Red cd days. When she has her own crowd- It is a different story let me tell ya- they just are so into her the whole time, it rocks!. I hope that she pulled in some new fans, mostly because I love her so much, I want others to experience her music as well. I am just addicted to her voice and lyrics. She touches on so many topics so well, that one would never expect in a song- - each line is just perfect- absolutely essential to the meaning of the train of thought- she nails it is the best way I can say it. I hope you tuned into her- I enjoyed meeting a few of you- Larue- and Mizz Linda come to mind right off as well as a couple others-. I also discovered a couple new artists- especially that Bruce Guthro- what a voice he has!- I will definitely be getting his cds off the web site- he sold out. I told him he was my main new discovery which I think pleased him- and he shook my hand. Also enjoyed Great Big Sea, and Tim O'Brien Band, Natalie MacMaster, Laurie Lewis and Nina Gerber of course, Chris Smithers, Dave Alvin and Pete- and it was the 3rd time I have seen Tracy Grammer this year and I am suddenly entranced by her voice as well. I'll be getting her Cds too I guess now! That is what it is all about- new discoveries. Let the music keep our spirit high..........Jackson Browne and, If there were no music, I could not get through.... It looks like it is on a demo Cd with Rain, Long Ride and this new one which I hope makes the next CD which Patty did mention would be out next year. For that matter, I hope she puts Florida and Moon's Gonna Follow Me Home on it as well- and Dear Old Friend- also cover of Tom Waits' Ruby's Arms is a must- and that new one she played last night- it sounds to me like the new Cd will be another really beautiful bunch of songs. Please don't lose any of these ones Patty- do you think anybody who decides these things ever reads anything I write? Mother Of God and Little God and Top of The World need to get rescued from Silver Bell. There you go, perfect - 8 songs, with room for a rowdy one or two if she wants. And go back to Falling Down- how did that one get lost? We NEED it. and We Are Water and One More Girl too. You would need yer crying rags for that whole Cd if happened that way. :) She wails pretty good on a few of those songs I just mentioned, so in my humble opinion, that would do for enough rowdy just just to keep us all awake. Dana in Berkeley- still high from last night it's been a long time son, oh how I've missed you, mmmm.........cry cry cry ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Sep 2003 01:05:24 EDT From: Rach2414@aol.com Subject: MM: Austin City Limits! Hello everyone... I know a bunch of you are coming in from out of town to see Patty play at the Austin City Limits Festival in a few weeks. I was thinking it would be fun if we all met up, either before or after the show and went and had drinks/food. I have a great place in mind...but as far as times go... Patty plays at five on saturday. The first bands on saturday start around noon and finish up around 10 pm. As to avoid missing any other performers, it would probably be better if we went out for brunch/breakfast before the day starts, or that evening after the day is over. Let me know if you all are interested and when you'd rather go, and we'll start planning! - -Rachel (rach2414@aol.com) ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #218 *********************************
