Usually when I see someone live, I like them more. I thought that by seeing Aimee Mann in person, I might do the same. Instead, I left early! I think "monotonous" is the best word to describe her voice. Maybe "unimaginative" could describe her melodies. I NEVER leave a show early, but I couldn't take any more! Glad you liked the show! :-> Scott Antall http://www.scottantall.com/ scott@scottantall.com 412-414-5121 - ---------------- Date: Tue, 12 Aug 2003 23:52:27 EDT From: SM082987@aol.com Subject: MM: pittsburgh review Ok Don, I was going to walk away from that disparaging review, but since you put the review on the web, which you didn't have to do, someone must respond. Mr. Mervis tipped his hat when he said he stayed around to see a " ...fine cover of Coldplay's Scientist". He could have gone with them, (those streaming people that left to watch the fountains or do whatever they had to do in disgust of Aimee Mann), but instead he stuck around. So gracious of him, was his employer making sure he covered the two encores? Of course, we should all take Mr. Mervis' reviews seriously since he is such a great popular music reviewer. One just has to plug his name into one's search engine on the computer and realize he has been a big fan of the Frames, the Strokes, and Manu Chao. Mr. Mervis made the fatal mistake of mentioning "midtempo monotony", midtempo being a tip-off for a mysogynist (sp?), to explain some of Aimee's songs. He ascribed part of this to the ..."alarmingly unimaginative band doing little to overcome the repetition of the songs" a reference to a band that included Mr. Julian Coryell, the opening act who was mysteriously not mentioned in the review either., or did you leave that review out? Mr. Mervis said that Patty was "her usual brilliant self" and that Doug added as much"...texture and tension as a full band without getting in her way". Do you really feel that was an accurate description of her act? People who describe concerts by preconceived notions or the ebb and flow of patrons should not be writing reviews. Mr. Mervis needed to be home on the recliner listening to Manu Chao in an enviroment that excluded songs about love, rather than sitting on the "...plastic chairs" of the Chevrolet Ampitheater. We loved the night, from Julian to the second encore. Her performance was very flat. I had never really heard her music in depth before, however, and I purchased her new album at the festival. Her sound was really quite good and the other musicians were strong, but the performance was just lacking. I would not see her live again, although I plan to buy more of her music. It was obvious that she looks up to Aimee, as well she should, Aimee's a genius songwriter if you listen to the words, she's an original, and has paved the way for artists like Patty to be true to who they really are, strike out on their own and find a way to survive without the major labels. Her record company nightmares and her fight to be herself and not be stuffed into the hit making mold are legendary. She gets what Aimee's about. If you key in on the singing, that's not what she's about. That's like saying you don't like Dylan because he can't sing. People I've tried to turn on to Patty give me similar type comments in that you can tell they really didn't listen with an open ear, were comparing her to a certain band or style that they like. She's too country, her music's too slow, why is it so sad? Hello? Having said all that, to each is own. I was in heaven. And, I am happy to know Patty knows a good thing when she hears it. I wasn't at this show, & obviously can not speak for Patty as to how she feels about Aimee Mann. I CAN say from experience at past shows though that Patty often times talks up the opener w/out ever actually hearing them. She'll say they're great while she's on stage, and then tell that particular person later on that she didn't hear any of their set, but her bandmates said they were great, etc... Now, if she said she heard them during reshearsals, etc.. then that's another thing. Just another thought. (not meant to be at all disparaging to anyone whom Patty has spoken highly about..)
