Short notice, I know, I think I need an assisstant for this stuff. Anyway, if you're free, please come out. If you don't know how to get there, you can find out here: http://www.steelcitycoffeehouse.com/directions.html I'll have an hour set, mostly if not all originals -- hope to see some of you there. He was great! He opened the show - he's also Aimee's guitarist. His solo record is great, although I was dissapointed that the mains kept a'cracklin during his set. Grrrr... sound men... Icicles Falling - is this what this song is called? I LOVED THIS. She sang a line about "years of therapy..." someone must get this one recorded. I need to know the lyrics. Doug was wonderful on TOTW. He played around her voice. Simply and beautifully. These are the highlights for me. Lotsa of people seemed into her. Big applause for Patty. Well I'm not a review writer, but this was my 5th time seeing her... not my favorite, but that's probably because she didn't play a full set. I think I'll be going to State College. Aimee Mann/Patty Griffin The fact that so many people were streaming toward the exit before Aimee Mann's set was over on Saturday night pointed to a few possibilities: They were there to see Patty Griffin. Their baby sitting was getting too pricey. They had something more fun to do, like stare at the fountain behind Bar Louie. I would have gone with them, but instead I stuck around to report that the encore did include a fine cover of Coldplay's "Scientist." Mann's set started promisingly enough, with the tall, blond singer displaying her cool, pretty voice over a ukulele on "Real Bad News" and then picking it up for "The Moth." By the fourth or fifth song, it had already settled into mid-tempo monotony with her alarmingly unimaginative band doing little to overcome the repetition of the songs. Mann's spare style and chillier-than-thou delivery, while maybe nice in the CD player, doesn't make for very compelling concert music, particularly on plastic chairs under the Chevrolet Amphitheatre tent. Even if she could kick it up a few notches live or add a sense of playfulness, she would lose the icy essence that gives her her appeal. Patty Griffin, on the other hand, was her usual brilliant self, reaching for hard-to-get notes and never missing on beautifully crafted songs like "Rain," "Making Pies" and "Mary." Electric guitarist Doug Lancio added as much texture and tension as a full band without ever getting in her way. The driving blues of "Flaming Red" merged almost perfectly with the arrival of a train (they were busy during her set) and a new song, "Top of the World," indicated that a winning follow-up to "1,000 Kisses" is on the way. - -- Review by Scott Mervis, Post-Gazette Weekend Editor ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 Aug 2003 12:59:12 -0400 From: Maureen Scott Subject: MM: Songwriters Tour Hi all, Does anyone have ticket info for the Patty/Shawn/Dar/MCC show in Boston? I am willing to tree it. If 10 or so people who are willing to send it out to up to 10 other list people contact me with LFML branch in subject line, and those who cannot burn Cds will put LFML leaf in subject line, I think I can easily forward the leaf messages to the branch folks and it should be easy???????? I'll forward them for the next week or so, but when I leave for Strawberry Music Festival, on 8 /27, the tree will be done and over, for my part at least. I need only mailing addresses for the branch folks- I'll send it out without trading, easier that way for me. You guys can do even trades or B&P as you wish, of course, as long as money is not involved. We never ever sell these collections,as a matter of honor- they are given or traded to share the music with fellow fans. This collection is Patty covers from live concerts mostly, some are new to me - art work should be available to print off the web, I'll announce separately as I don't have the link right now.
