Just like Cine Las Americas. WYEP advertised Aimee & Patty as co-headliners , with both doing full sets. Patty did 11 songs , not a full set for her , & Aimee did 16. While I will see Patty anytime she's in my hometown , many people traveled long distances for this show & deserved better. Insley from Md , Darcie & Julie from Philly , Rob from Outer Space , & Misty from Nashville , along with friends and/or relatives who came along. All had a great get- together before the show, except for Darcie , who couldn't make it in time , & including Bonnie from the Pgh area. Patty came out in with her Willie Nelson / Insley hairstyle. Straight , with a few braids over the front. Saw a letter to the editor right before I left , commenting on the acoustics at the Chev Amp. Peter , Paul & Mary performed there recently , & one of the men was quoted as saying that , " as far as acoustics go , the Chev Amp is a nice place to park a blimp". I don't get caught up in acoustics too much as long as I can hear Patty's vocal nuances , but I have noticed on occasion , at a few indoor venues , a richer , fuller sound. He never mentioned trains.Set list : Be Careful Making Pies Chief Rain Flaming Red Top of the World Goodbye Truth # 2 Icicles Falling Mary Encore Let him Fly As mentioned , Patty played a late show in Edmonton the night before , so she & Doug were probably "toasty" as Patty said. "Be Careful" was a little uneven , "Making Pies" was better , & by the time they got to "Chief" they were back to our normally expected high level of performance. Vocals & music were excellent from "Chief" to the end of "TOTW". Although I like Doug's solo there , Patty's ending vocals don't seem to have as much intensity when she's not closing the song .A train started going past as they were near the end of "Flaming Red" & was still going when Patty wanted to go into "TOTW". She stalled for a little time between songs , but having no idea how long it would be , she had to start in on the quiet beginning with the train still rumbling by. Station Square - a RR terminal. Nice place to put a venue. As usual , Patty seemed to more amused than anything when a problem comes up. She joked that she wished she had a train song. Stage presence galore , in my opinion. Another train went by later , between songs , & she said she guessed it was time to do some tuning. They tuned & tuned till the train was gone , which got a loud approval from the crowd. "Goodbye" is one of my favs , & was the higlight of the show up till then. I often chafe about Doug's guitar drowning Patty out on occasion , & it happened at the end of "Goodbye" , but...... this was different. Patty's voice was very loud & strong , but she was a little back from the mike & Doug's playing was very loud. Although Patty's voice could be heard , it had a faraway sense to it. It gave the proverbial "voice in the wilderness" impression , & worked very well for closing that particular song. "Truth # 2" was very good , & very rhythmic w/o the full band. "Icicles Falling" was another highlight. The second time I heard it , & it grew on me a lot. Patty's vocals were very strong & passionate.Picked up a line about " someone throwing matches around & they're the first to run when the house burns". Doubt if that's verbatim , but the gist is there. Didn't notice "Mary" much. I'm sure that's b/c it indicated she was finishing , & I wasn't too happy about it. Fortunately , she came out for a 1 song encore. Great version of "Let him Fly" with the ending I prefer that runs up the scale. My personal highlight. Only stayed a little while for Aimee , who seemed good , but we had other things we wanted to do. I am a long-time Springsteen fanatic who believes that Patty is the only artist who can even approach (and perhaps surpass?) Springsteen's songwriting brilliance. That is my segue. I'm selling a pair of Springsteen tickets at cost for the Washington, D.C. show on Saturday September 13th. They're on the field: section B4, row 25. I got these a few months ago before I knew that he was coming to my "hometown" of Toronto. If anybody is interested please let me know--adamkositsky@hotmail.com. If I don't hear anything within the next couple of days, I'll sell the tickets at backstreets.com. Just wanted to let my Patty comrades have first go at the ticks. :) Best to all, Adam Kositsky Toronto, Ontario _________________________________________________________________ The new MSN 8: advanced junk mail protection and 2 months FREE* http://join.msn.com/?page=features/junkmail ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 11 Aug 2003 07:15:02 -0400 From: "Adam Kositsky" Subject: MM: Re: Springsteen tickets correction Hi, Just to clarify, my email address is adamkositsky@hotmail.com. And if, as is always a posibility, they back out at the last minute, Charlie will go and just be tired for work the next day. He's that kind of guy, I am lucky God decided to cross our paths. And, you are pretty wonderful, too, Don. You're putting out good energy, spreading the Patty love. Thanks so much. And to all, especially everyone else at the Pittsburgh show, I have to put in a word for Aimee, as she, along with Patty, are my favorite singer/songwriters. This show was her best one of the three that I've seen. Some of her stuff, while incredible live, is hard to translate the magic from the recorded version. 'Wise Up', while mainly a piano song, captured it. And, her lyrics are so important to hear, it frustrates me that people new to her may not know what she's saying. You gotta hear the lyrics, they're so clever. But the band was tight, while vocally she's no Patty, and doesn't try to be, I noticed her streching her vocals here and there. I'd like to think hearing Patty from the dressing room (or wherever they were waiting) gave her that spark. She certainly makes me want to sing. Anyway, Patty was delightful, her voice achingly beautiful (I've never seen a show where it's not), and yes, way too short, but worth the trip from Philly. There were lots of seats in the middle front section empty! Maybe ticket brokers not able to sell all their gluttony? If so, hope they lost enough to say ouch. BTW - Aimee was staying at the Westin Hotel, where we were staying, but saw hide nor hair of her. Great hotel though - and Pittsburgh was very cool! I'm originally from one of those little railroad type towns in upstate NY - Endicott - so I loved it there. Pennsylvania is a beautiful state to drive through. Lots of Starbucks on the way, too. Nice to have met all at the dinner - take care.Julie and Charlie Don - I will email you with my address - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MSN 8 helps ELIMINATE E-MAIL VIRUSES.
