Excellent at what they do , but not up my alley. Ditto for "They Might Be Giants" who preceded Patty. They were advertised as Pop , but it should have been Novelty. I did enjoy some of their music & comedy , though. Set List: The Long Ride Goodbye Making Pies Be Careful Chief Rain Flaming Red Poor Man's House - solo Moses - solo Backwater Blues Mad Mission The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home Truth # 2 Mary Encore Let Him Fly Tomorrow Night Much more cohesive at the beginning , as Patty & Doug rapidly improved their chemistry. Consistently good until "Flaming Red" , when Patty nailed the bluesy opening as well as I've ever heard it. Possibly due to the influence of her doing "Backwater Blues" during the set , getting into that blues mindset more than usual. Finished the set at a consistently high level , but I did miss the circusy sound on MM. Doug couldn't play his little electronic instrument b/c he had to play guitar. I like "Mary" more with just Patty & Doug , I think b/c Patty's vocals seem more focused w/o the band , but I still like the FR band's version best. Then there was the encore. Patty knocked out "Let Him Fly" , & as she was singing the closing the closing lines , I had an epiphany ( sudden intuitive perception into reality or essential meaning ) that I've only experienced once before at a concert. Robby Steinhardt of Kansas elicited an audible gasp from the crowd when he seemingly took his violin to a place never seen before. My gasp was inaudible , but there nonetheless. This time Patty drew an audible WOW ! from me as I turned to Dave to see if he got the same thing. I was enjoying the great version of "Let Him Fly" till then , & all of sudden I was just floored by this sense of perfection. The flow of it , the tone & volume just seemed to drill to my core effortlessly. It only lasted a few seconds , but was easily the highlight of the set. Only other strong memory of the set was when Patty was being harassed by bugs , attracted to the lights. She said that was one of the drawbacks of performing. Occasionally , you get one in your mouth or nose , but the show must go on. What a trouper ! They were amazing. And I never realized Joe's Pub had such comfortable couches. Anyway, to get tot he Patty stuff. First of all, I was sitting next to a couple who also loved Patty...guess all these atists tie in together. But what was really cool was that ems played Patty's "Mary" and mentioned how they all worship some poster of hers or something like that. (Ok maybe not so much worship as it gives them inspiration). I'll refrain from blabbing on about the concert, since this IS a Patty list. - -Lisa - -------------- "Everything's an effort when you doubt the purpose of your soul" -- Bree Sharp, "Sleep Forever" ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #186 *********************************
