I don't like to speculate about things too much, but I > don't know if it's partially due to the Silver Bell fiasco & the record > company never releasing it or what. That makes 2 "full band" recordings that were > either not released, or rejected by a stupid record company. I don't think it's due to the SB fiasco. I think Patty is evolving - or maybe just crossing a phase, who knows - to a slow/soft style naturally. I have to say that, to my ears and my heart, "1000 Kisses" is her best work - material and performance - so I'm not surprised she digs that way. I'd also like to elaborate an impression: her material and performance is fitting with her physical and vocal maturity. I even think that for some artists - I believe Patty is among these ones - there's a need to fuse the creativity with the body, something physical. Maybe one of the keys of Patty's excellence is here, in this truth she finds between her current physical and vocal potential and her inspiration. Anyway, I did my best trying to explain that :o) Thanks for the nice review, Dave Hugues ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Jul 2003 06:55:48 -0700 (PDT) From: Jordan Clements Subject: Re: MM: sunday in schenectady I just wanted to say that I also got to see Patty yesterday and it was just an awesome show. The only other time I've seen her was when she opened for the Dixie Chicks, but this was even more amazing. I know that she's the most powerful voice in music today, but I think, until you see her live, you tend to forget just how powerful it really is. I've had the opportunity to see so many concerts, from Ani to Aimee Mann, and Sheryl Crow and Jess Klein...but from sitting in awe in the front row--to meeting this woman who has meant so much to me and changed my life both musically and emotionally, this had to be the best show I've ever seen. Plus Patty was just really cute on stage, but I know most everyone on the list already knows that. Okay, well I guess it's back to regular life now. And I decided to check their site and see if they are by any chance touring near ny...and it turns out they're gonna be here tomorrow and the day after??!? Talk about good timing...I have to see if i can still get tickets. Is anyone going from here? So now I'll take my turn in thanking whoever recommended them. - -Lisa - -------------- "Everything's an effort when you doubt the purpose of your soul" -- Bree Sharp, "Sleep Forever" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 00:18:27 EDT From: Mooodeee@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Re: slower/soft new songs In a message dated 7/21/2003 1:11:18 AM Central Daylight Time, o.hugues@wanadoo.fr writes: > One thing I've noticed about Patty's new songs is they all seem to be of > the > >slower/softer variety Maybe it could be a testimony to her current emotional state. You know how songwriters are. ~ Mimi ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Jul 2003 00:32:04 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Great Barrington Mmers , I thought I knew what "general admission" meant , but the Mahaiwe Theater or Club Helsinki has a different idea. The Generals go in before the doors open ( 7of them ) , & are seated front row center. Then the nobodies who stood in line are admitted , & can sit wherever they want , as long as it's not in the reserved seats , 3rd row center , & one more row a little farther back. Nice ! My guess is that the loge boxes may have been reserved too. Dave & I were lucky enough to get the 2 front row centers remaining , as the 2 in front of us opted for the balcony. Trip started out inauspiciously as we were rear- ended ( ooh my ! ) coming out of Dave's home town of Carlisle. No injuries , & just rear bumper damage. Set list: Rain Chief Making Pies Be Careful Goodbye Christina - solo Moses - solo The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home - solo Florida The Long Ride Backwater Blues Useless Desires Truth # 2 Icicles Falling Mary Encore Let Him Fly Tomorrow Night Ten Million Miles Loved the opening notes to "Rain" , as Doug played the haunting notes that I always enjoy hearing on "Stolen Car" , but it didn't carry through the whole song. First few songs were a little uneven , & Patty apologized for the "rough edges" due to her working on new songs for her upcoming CD. She said it would probably be released next year. Still excellent by normal standards , though. Things picked up for "Goodbye" ( one of my favs ) and through the solo set , then again when "blues woman" Patty knocked out "Backwater Blues" , a Bessie Smith cover. I had heard "Useless Desires" once before when she did it opening for Steve Earle at the Ryman. Got it confused with "My Dear Old Friend" b/c of the line "goodbye old friend" in it. Whie the useless desires line seems to indicate a personal relationship , the words describe a city or neighborhood. Perhaps she wrote it when she was moving away from both a place , & people she was close to. Didn't get a good read on "Icicles Falling" for some reason. That often happens with new songs , as I'm trying to absorb the words , the vocals , & the compositon at the same time. "Mary" was better than usual , & the encore was top-notch. Don't think I've heard Patty & Doug do a number of songs w/o the band before. They were definitely missed on "Truth # 2" & "Chief". One thing I noticed was that Patty seemed to hit the strong notes more passionately , as though she felt bottled up from not doing them for awhile , especially on "Moses". MMers , Forgot to mention Kris Delmhorst , who was excellent , & said that opening for Patty was the closest she'll ever get to wanting to hurry through her set. Also forgot to mention that Dave & I stopped in the Karaoke bar at the motel , hoping that Patty would show up & do "Oops , I Did it Again" , but no luck. Luckily , we got there late , so neither one of us got lathered enough to sing. We did , however smash all existing records on the trivia games we played ......... Well..... the existing records were all zero , but we did stay at a Knights Inn that night : ) Don ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #185 *********************************
