First of all, I'm glad I didn't buy anything from Iris Dement before hearing the clips, b/c what I did hear from her, her voice sounds really annoying (no offense to those who listen to her...she's just not my taste). As for eastmountainsouth, I couldn't tell enough from the 30 sec clips whether I like them. Is there any place I can d/l a complete song of theirs (besides Kazaa)? Couldn't make Schenectady today due to needing to get home to take care of my dogs.. :-( but like they say, 2 out of 3 ain't bad. The weather in MA is just gorgeous this time of year. Don will certainly list entire set lists as soon as he gets home to Pittsburgh. I just got in the door here & thought I should at least post a semi-review before catching up on things. I'll leave the details to Don (since he's the best at the concise reviews). First, for Great Barrington. (I'll do Green River in another post). After driving all day, being in a car accident, & stopping in Springfield, MA just long enough to check in at our hotel.. we got back into Don's slightly damaged car & arrived @ The Mahaiwe Theatre in Great Barrington around 4:15pm. We stopped to pick up our tickets @ will call, grabbed a bite to eat, and got in line @ 5pm behind only 2 others who were Patty virgins. Soon after MMer Sarah (who drove from Maine) arrived, as did a gentleman from Kuwait whose name I can't remember! He posts on TDtT. He just finished up his schooling here in the states, and this was also his first, and probably last Patty show as he'll soon be heading back to Kuwait. Anyway, it was a regular 'ol MM & TDtT party out there on the sidewalk.. LOL When the doors finally opened & we got into the theatre.. 3 of the first 5 rows were curiously either: A. Reserved (the entire 3rd & 5th rows) or B. Already occupied by people who were let in before those who waited in line for hours. (all but 2 seats of the 1st row were taken) Of the 3 dozen or so Patty shows that I've been to, this has only happened at 1 other place (Lebanon, NH).. so I'm wondering if this is customary procedure in the New England states? Block the very good seats, and screw those who stood in line for hours to get THOSE VERY seats. Don & I were lucky enough to snag the last 2 remaining front/center section seats, unfortunately everyone else who had been in line all evening had slim pickins. :-( The front row was already far enough away at this venue, and I don't want to sound like *too much* of a baby here, but come on. The people that REALLY want those seats are the ones who get there early to get them. I don't understand why they don't do like they do at other venues & maybe reserve some seats, but scatter them from the 3rd to 9th or 10th rows. The lower level only had 11 rows of seats, so well over 25% of the lower level/center section seats were not available. On to the show. Patty looked dazzling in her dress & with her hair down. It was the first time that I've seen her hair down during a show in a long time (maybe 1st time ever). It was obvious early on that the chemistry between Doug & Patty was not quite up to what it normally is on a tour, but they seemed to settle in well. It was probably their first duo show in quite awhile, as she's been doing the full band thing for quite awhile now. She did knock out versions of Let Him Fly, Moses, Florida, & that new Bessie Smith song (can't recall the name). Don & I always talk about how Patty is "blues woman" & once again she proved she is. It's a wonder that she doesn't write more songs in that vein musically. Mary also sounded superb with just her & Doug. It's been so long since I heard it without the full band, that was nice for a change. Also Christina SOLO was breathtaking. God, I love it when she does that song solo. :-) She seemed to be in good humor, and made many jokes about how hot it was, and how she was struggling to get things right. She mentioned the songbook being out now, and said that "maybe I should have looked it over before coming up here"... LOL I saw a few times where she moved to a wrong guitar chord or something, which is understandable for someone who hasn't been on tour, and has been playing only new material inside a studio for awhile now. Patty's shows have never been super polished, which has always been one of the charming things about them. For a performer like her, I think it's important that you're not getting something that's been rehearsed over & over again. She mentioned that the new album will *hopefully* be out sometime next year, after the live album & DVD this October. The crowd was very enthusiastic overall, and seemed to know most of the songs. Patty started playing in the Boston area, so that should be expected I guess since she's somewhat of a hometown hero now. I say this a lot, but it always makes the atmosphere at a show so much better to share it with people who are just as enthusiastic about the performers as you are. When you go to see Patty in the Philly area, you know you'll always be there with the most serious & devoted Patty fans. The New England area & Ann Arbor are the only 2 places that I've been to that rival that sort of enthusiasm, although I would assume Nashville is right up there as well. Kris Delmhorst opened the night, and was also very, very good. She said that this was one of the very few nights that she looked forward to her set being over a little bit faster so she could check out the headliner. :-) She seems like a very nice girl, & also is obviously a gifted musician. Overall she's one of the best Patty openers I think I've ever seen. After all I heard about her on this list, I was happy to not be disappointed. I would definitely go to see her again if she makes it down to the Central PA area. I'll post a review for the Greenfield Festival show later on tonight or tomorrow. I am from about 2 hours north of the Albany area, but a friend and I made the trip today. Gosh, I would have payed a ton of money just to see her play since she doesn't come around upstate NY too often. Anyway, Patty was amazing, just as I assumed she would be. She played mostly stuff from 1000 Kisses, but also graced us with a few songs from LWG, FR, and SB. I was so excited to hear LWG material since that is the album that made me fall in love with her. She started out in the wrong tuning on "Chief" and had to start "Tomorrow Night" over again after she heard a Harley Davidson in the background, but I feel that these are the sorts of moments that make me love her so much! (haha) The best part was after the show, when Patty greeted fans and signed autographs. I have never had the chance to see her in a venue like the one in this park and have never had a chance to meet her. Of course I waited in line for this chance, even though I was scared to death with butterflies in my stomach thinking about what to say. Once I reached the beginning of the line, I asked her to make it out "To Erin" and mentioned that my middle name was Jean too (It may have sounded silly, but I was speechless!!). Patty is even more beautiful up close than I could ever imagine, and so very tiny! I can't believe that huge voice comes from her. She also mentioned that she was recording a new album. Hmmm...I haven't heard anything about this yet. Does anyone have any info? Well, I am still excited and this happened like...4 hours ago. I have to go tell my friends about it now! Was anyone else there from the list? Erin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 20 Jul 2003 22:52:28 EDT From: FlamingRed74@aol.com Subject: MM: Green River Festival Installment # 2 Well, Don & I headed for the Green River Festival in Greenfield, MA for the 2nd leg of our "Mini Patty Tour" last night. Overall it was a cool little festival with hot air balloon rides & all the typical festival-type food & activities, craft vendors, etc.. just nicer because it was a small community type thing. On our way to the show we passed a store that gave Scuba Lessons, which of course brought a reminder of one of our favorite MMers who was not able to make this trip. :-( Patty started the show around 8:15pm, right about the time the sun went down & the air started to cool off a bit. Overall it was such a beautiful setting. As you looked behind the stage you could see the MA mountains in the background. Patty & Doug seemed a lot more cohesive during this set, which in turn seemed to make things more comfortable for them, and the songs flowed more freely. Once again, there was a pretty large crowd for her set, & everyone seemed to be very enthusiastic. Since we were smacked right up against the barrier in front of the stage, I couldn't tell what everything sounded like further back, but it sounded great up front. We got pretty much the same songs as Friday night.. except Poor Man's House was substituted for the new "Icecicle" song, and Flaming Red was substituted for Florida. Flaming Red & again Let Him Fly were probably the 2 songs I remember as being unbelievably awesome. Once again the Bessie Smith song was also amazing. It never ceases to amazing me how Patty finds these obscure cover songs & how she does them SO well.. :-) Truth # 2 also seemed to be one of the crowd favorites, as it always is. By the time the set was over, it seemed like it was about 55 degrees out there & my nose was actually about frozen.. LOL Don said "well then you must be a healthy dog".. LOL I don't get cold easily, so it was a real surprise to me that I could be so cold in the middle of July! When we got back to the car it actually was about 68 degrees, so maybe it was just that we were w/out the great Central PA humidity. One thing I've noticed about Patty's new songs is they all seem to be of the slower/softer variety. I don't like to speculate about things too much, but I don't know if it's partially due to the Silver Bell fiasco & the record company never releasing it or what. That makes 2 "full band" recordings that were either not released, or rejected by a stupid record company. It really seems weird to not hear her rocking out much at all during her sets, and not at all in the new songs. Even though her very early shows were solo, she could always rock the house with Every Little Bit, We Are Water, Cain, etc.. Her singing & playing sounds so good doing ANY style, but it seems like the range of sounds in her songs during a set has been limited lately. I just hope she hasn't lost confidence in that area of her songwriting because the ability to do all these different kinds of music better than almost anyone else was always one of the things that set her apart from everyone else. Anyway.. I'm rambling & hopefully not sounding negative here! I always overanalyze this stuff, but it's been awhile now that I've thought.. hmm.. when was the last time Patty wrote a really rocking song?? Twisted Road is the last one I can remember, and that's not even on a CD. Anyway, I'm NOT being negative.. just speculating as to why she seems to be only writing a lot of slower/quiter songs lately (at least as far as we know). Any Patty that I've heard is better than just about anything other people do, and I'm so grateful to get to hear & see her in person as much as I do. That's what half my vacation time always seems to go to.. thank god for not having children to deal with.. although I DO have my dogs which are like babies to me. I'm stopping now!
