It's bigger than a breadbox too." I just came back from the awesome Kate Wolf Festival in Laytonville, CA at Wavy Gravy's Hog Farm - Black Oak Ranch. It was a great weekend and Mary and Shawn closed the concert last night, Shawn being the surprise. I have only seen Mary CC 3 times before and she was so different last night, talking about how she couldn't remember her lyrics due to the headache meds and she had Shawn there to get her thru it. It was so fun- they were just hilarious up there and seemed to be enjoying themselves. Very off the cuff and jamming it seemed. Mary did just fine on a number of cover songs that they did. For America, Dancing in the Streets, a bunch of other covers, they were Cover Gilrls last night. I would love to see Dar and Patty join them on tour as rumored this fall. Mary and Shawn have a great rapport and really seem to enjoy each other. Shawn is such a clown and I never saw Mary be so goofy before. Must be the meds. A great time was had by all. My new discoveries of the weekend were Beth Neilson Chapman who I never heard before and who has a really warm and beautiful voice as well as a bunch of touching songs. Also Karen Savoca , new to me, was so good, another good voice and style. Tracy Grammer another beautiful voice and fiddle player, continuing Dave Carter's songs now as a mission. Eliza Gilkyson was just great! I have been very interested in her music ever since I heard her concert boot where she opened for Patty last year. Love her now. I had seen her once before in the Woody Tribute concert last winter. She is now on my list of major fave singersongwriters and I will have to be there every time she comes to town. I never saw Iris Dement before either and loved her- I have known most of her music just for a couple of years. One line of a song of hers really struck me as just the epitome of depression "the flowers in the garden have all died and there's not much living here inside." That is about as bad as it gets! (altho I thankfully am never that down, no matter what- I am glad to be alive. Every day that I wake up is a good day, etc.) The Waifs returned and you all just have to see them live if you get the chance! I was mesmerized by them last year, as was the whole audience. They are rapidly developing a following here in the US. They are from Australia and touring in US all summer so catch them if you can. Apparently they just toured with Bob Dylan! I heard two of their guitars were smashed by the airlines and they were playing on borrowed guitars- that makes their tight performance even more incredible. They have a song called "Lies" which Jackson Browne basically could have written back in the 80's, it is his political message ongoing. I also enjoyed the Tim O'Brien Band- they did "Lay Down Your Weary Tune" a song from the past, a highlight of the festival, beautiful with that fiddle and his appealing voice. Utah Phillips, Wavy Gravy and Rosalie Sorrels were each wonderful in their own way. Rose Tattoo is also very interesting. The one woman singer in that group has a beautiful voice. I really enjoyed all of them and they added so much personality to the overall weekend with their hobo, train, Union and life stories etc. Almost makes you want to drop everything and ride the rails. Greg Brown charmed the women of the audience as usual, a new song- "I Want My Country Back", very timely, and Nina Gerber accompanied many of the performers- she is just beloved by CA audiences. She is the female version of David Lindley, only no polyester. Everyone did a Kate Wolf song, keeping her memory alive, even to many of us who never saw her play. The last night I stayed up to go to the river campfire for song jamming. It was a moonless night with brilliant stars out, the Milky Way splashing across the sky, chilly air, {surprising as it was maybe 90-100 degrees all day. I actually had to go sit in the river for a while each afternoon to cool off!) and a circle of mostly young aspiring singersongwriters. I had to to turn my sorry ---- in {quoting Eliza Gilkyson} at 2:30 am as I am just plain too tired for all nighters these days, but I wanted to stay. I took over 100 digital photos across the weekend, and maybe I can get them up on a website (something I have never done, but I would like to accomplish that) for anyone who would like to go vicariously thru me. I'll let you know if that happens. I love these folk festival weekends. The next one for me is Strawberry Music Festival at Yosemite on Labor Day weeked with Patty Griffin closing Sun eve- sold out unfortunately for all you sorry - ---- folks who didn't get one when I told you to last spring. :) There are lots of other festivals on tho so get yourself to one near you if you possibly can- and the camping part is really not hard- you don't have to cook- the vendors there are cheap enough and pretty good. I just put up my little 2 man tent myself and wore 3 layers at night. It was not cold in that get-up and I even managed to sleep for about 5- 6 hrs each night. People are pretty friendly at these events- lots of interesting folks go. No phone, laundry, dishes, TV, you have a welcome black-out on the bad news of the day, just great music and the outdoors. Heaven. For the Jackson Browne connection to this post- he was actually mentioned twice from the stage, Wavy Gravy mentioned his "good friend Jackson Browne" who got arrested demonstrating with him a few years ago and someone smuggled in a guitar and they had great music that night in the "slammer"- also they auctioned off a poster signed by Pete Seeger, Joan Baez, Jackson and a few others- his signature was barely recognizable- first time I had seen it. Also, I met a guitar player there who saw him way back in the Troubador days, says he knows him by name, and has been to the Abbey. Pretty cool. Brescia for him. :) {code for my favorite JB compost} also a Scottish Rite- {Patty compost}. Dana, back in Berkeley but really still in Laytonville at Kate Wolf where tonight there are still echoes among the Black Oak trees at the Hog Farm where 3-4000 souls gathered together for 3 days in peace. A Happening that will never come around in the same way with the same exact people and music again.
