The whole story is here: http://www.chicagotribune.com/features/chi-0305310186may31,1,3189120.story Or, here are the Patty-related bits of the article, by Tribune rock critic Greg Kot: "Maines mentioned the "incident" only once, as if referring to an indelicate piece of surgery. But there was one bit of Chicks hokum, when the "incident" was linked to the Patty Griffin song "Truth No. 2." While video footage of civil rights marchers and suffragettes paraded across the screens overhanging the stage, Maines sang, "You don't like the sound of the truth/Coming from my mouth . . . I don't think that I'm afraid anymore, say that I would rather die trying." For the Chicks to equate their public-relations dust-up with the historic fight against discrimination takes the kind of hubris associated with out-of-touch rock stars, not down-home country acts." "There's risk in the mix, too, particularly when another fine Patty Griffin song, "Top of the World," was performed in tones barely above a whisper, punctuated by a lovely exchange between a string quartet and Maguire's fiddle. The lyric is sung from the perspective of a dead man, tormented by opportunities missed. Like the best country music, it's a song that finds the drama in everyday life, in kitchen-table conversations and late-night soul-searching. "I wished I loved Jesus the way my wife does," Maines sang, and the sense of longing was wrenching -- a rare instance when an arena was shrunk to living-room size by the conviction and intimacy of the performance." - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ MSN 8 helps ELIMINATE E-MAIL VIRUSES. I think it's been about two months now...sigh. I'm so disappointed-I ordered Living With Ghosts on-line on Halfbay and haven't received it yet...it's been like 3 weeks or more:( I just couldn't find it in any stores around here, but my sister did say she'd seen it in CT stores. I've actually listened to most of it on-line, but will still get it, of course. I wanted to mention some songs that I'm so crazy about right now. "Poor Man's House"....WOW.....I can't even believe the power in this song. The guitar goes so well with the feel of the song. I'm just crazy about it. "Sorry and Sad"...did Patty write this? I can't remember if it's on LWG or not. It is such a quirky, funky little song..almost reminds me of a B52's song or something like that...I LOVE it. "Night"....I have listened to this on-line...a live version...with just the piano-STUNNING. Again..did she write this as well? "Forgiveness"...I just think that in this song as in so many others the content is so lush...gives you so much to think about and visualize....it's just so well crafted if you know what I mean. That bottom of the well part-and swimming with the snakes..so great. I also found a song by the Smiths(I think) that she does....really cute...her covers are really different. I'm just crazy > about it. speaking of getting LWG. www.deepdiscountcd.com has brand NEW copies of LWG for only $9.97. Shipping is always free with them, but it takes about 5-6 days to get CDs. I've bought stuff from them before, and have never had a problem. I doubt there's anyone out there who will beat $10 for a brand new LWG. :-) Buy.com is also very reliable, and as of now their price is $10.99. You'd have to pay for shipping, but their shipping is usually pretty inexpensive. > > "Sorry and Sad"...did Patty write this? I can't remember if it's on LWG > or not. Sorry & Sad is on Silver Bell, and yes Patty DID write it. > > "Night"....I have listened to this on-line...a live version...with just > the piano-STUNNING. Again..did she write this as well? This is another one of Patty's unreleased gems. Definitely in my top 10 favorite Patty songs. Yes, she wrote it, but has only played it live a handful of times. Since she has such an incredible amount of awesome material, I often times wonder if she simply forgets about songs like this (that are so great). Or, does she just get tired of playing them, and chooses to move on before "the disciples" (LOL) start to clamor and want to hear it every night? Or, is there another reason why these songs get lost in the shuffle? Any other artist would die to have written material like this.. Patty just tosses it & moves on. Very weird, but it speaks volumes for her songwriting abilities. > > > I also found a song by the Smiths(I think) that she does....really > cute...her covers are really different. That Smiths song is "Half A Person". I bought the Smiths CD "Louder Than Bombs" album just to hear this song. Man, what a disappointment! After hearing Patty do 2 different versions of this (the slower/softer, and faster/louder versions).. it really made me want to hear this song by the original artist. I usually don't go tracking things like this down, b/c I know Patty if I hear it from Patty first, the original will probably be no comparison. For some reason I thought this song would be different. Well, I was wrong. So far, Springsteen doing "Nebraska" is the ONLY thing that Patty's covered that I've also enjoyed hearing the original artists version.. It's so nice to see that you & Insley are still continuing your Patty enthusiasm. If you're like some of us here, this will continue building until you see her live, then it will seem pretty close to an obsession.. and that'll last for a few years, until you finally actually start listening to other artists again. Then, every time you hear Patty again after a slight layoff you'll wonder why you ever listen to anyone else.. (unless you listen to Darcie, then it's ok to at times listen to someone other than Patty) LOL Dave ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #146 *********************************
