I take a back seat to no one in my admiration for Patty's talent. But calling ourselves disciples? Yuk. It blurs the line between fan and fanatic a little too much for my tastes. It has a weird connotation of blind faith and over-the-top response to someone who is just an artist. I cannot imagine that Patty would be comfortable with the phrase . . . I realize that this description is meant as endearing and is also somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but nevertheless . . . ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 May 2003 13:22:07 +0100 From: "Matthew Smith" Subject: MM: FW: Disciples? I agree whole-heartedly, some of the stuff I've seen posted puts me in mind of Patty ending up needing restraining orders, especially of she "hits the big time" - -----Original Message----- From: owner-mad-mission@smoe.org [mailto:owner-mad-mission@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Jerry Skomer Sent: 16 May 2003 11:43 To: 'mad-mission@smoe.org' Subject: MM: Disciples? It occurs to me that about a year ago I expressed these sentiments on this board when someone referred to Patty as a god, and I was flamed relentlessly for it. Glad to see that some perspective is being gained. (read this).. to clear this up Jerry (others), Regarding the "disciples" term that has been rehashed here. Years & years ago Dana & I used to say this & there was a particular reason why. Due to our admiration of Patty's music, and our relentless nature of spreading the word to those ignorant of her talents (internet, family, friends, etc..) we just blurted out this term & we enjoyed it, so it stuck. While the word is mostly associated or used when discussing Jesus and/or biblical related topics, when referencing my trusty dictionary, the true meaning of Disciple simply is- Disciple- "One who embraces and assists in spreading the teachings of another". In this case those "teachings" would be her music. So would the "embracing" part be associated with her music/lyrics. At the time it may have been mostly used through private emails, but it WAS posted here back when this list was a very small group. Jerry, I believe you were around then.. and it was never meant to be in any way blasphemous or relating to Patty as being god-like. It's simply stating our love & passion of spreading her music to others. .. but due to the way the word is commonly used I can see the misunderstanding.
