Unbelievable. Absolutely unbelievable. This takes all the effort in time, money, and worry over doing it right and makes it all FOR NOTHING. Perhaps someone can trace back the lineage and shed light on how this was able to happen. Whatever the determination, it leaves a very sour taste in my mouth, and questions of future recording. What will happen is the tapers who are true will only trade among themselves and not make show available to others. While you may trust the person you trade with you don't have any idea how things will go down the line. The other thing that could happen is tapers will keep it for their own use and not share. Yes, it's unfortunate, but Patty Griffin is hardly the only artist that is bootlegged for profit. And I can tell you with great confidence that if she actually supported taping, and people could openly tape and trade her shows, then something like this would be very hard to sell anyway. Go try and sell a Dave Matthews or John Mayer show and see what happens. I, personally, would never tape (or trade for) a show and sell it. I also think it's disgusting that anyone would, however I'm certainly not losing any sleep over it. Russ p.s. - anyone hear about instantliveconcerts.com? very weird and a little creepy... > What will happen is the tapers who are true will only trade among > themselves and not make show available to others. However.. Patty fans seem to be quite a bit more protective of her live recordings than most any other artist I've ever traded for. Reasons? .. I don't really know, but I'll offer some suggestions. Patty connects with us on an emotional level more so than most artists do to their fans. Since she is still somewhat unknown, we get to actually lean on the stage & live those songs vicariously through her as she performs them only inches in front of us. Many people who have been to shows have actually interacted with her many times (not as likely with Dave Matthews, etc..).. therefore this creates a strong bond between fan & artist. We also know her feelings regarding live shows, so even though we still trade them (naughty), we become more protective of them & get pretty upset when someone profits from her music. Furthermore.. other frequently bootlegged artists (Pearl Jam, Phish, etc..) make millions more than Patty ever has. So.. their fans may be slightly upset about them losing out due to a "profiteer", but they don't get nearly as irate as a Patty fan would under the same circumstances. Clearly, all of us here feel that she deserves so much more fame, fortune, & acclaim than she has been given to this point in her career. So, it's safe to say when someone steals her art, it seems so much more appalling to the fans. I do have a feeling though that Patty is very happy with her current status, & could do w/out the acclaim that we so very much want for her.
