Doug & MMers , Most of the Darcie posts mentioned her name in the subject , & were easy to delete or pass by if you weren't interested. Much easier than the spam we all get if we do any web surfing at all , that disguise their subject until you open them. A good time to mention to mention the perpetual conflict between the individual & the community. Should the majority of list members be deprived of free discourse b/c a minority have critical space considerations ? The Dixie Chicks thing had more to do with volatile political discussion than off- subject matter. A dedicated fan base is one of the most important things you can have when you're striving to become more noticed , & the personal bonds between fans , the feeling of family or community , help energize that fan base to proclaim Patty's music to all. Like Mike : ) , I'm not putting you down , & hope you can rectify your limited space situation for your own , & our , benefit. Night sounds like a judgement And nobody speaks on your behalf And you hear yourself calling out loud And you hear the night laughing back Patty Griffin "Night" Don > Doug mentioned: > > >Okay, maybe this is me being a bit of a grouch here, But there seems > >to be A LOT of e-mails all about Darcie. Patty Griffin, AND the list > community....it's members. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 11:14:40 +0200 From: "hugues" Subject: MM: Some questions Hi all, Was listening to "Silver Bell" yesterday... my faves: "Boston", "What You Are", "Silver Bell", "Top Of The World", "Making Pies", "Mother Of God" (especially this one!), "Standing"... The album is varied and the ending (last five, six songs) sublime. Was wondering: why did Patty take "Making Pies" only for "1000 Kisses"? Does that mean she neglects the other songs? I suppose not and that she plays them often on stage. Does anyone know if she intends to record the Silver Bell songs again for her next records? Most of them would highly deserve it! This collection can't stand in the shadow anymore. Love, Hugues (in France) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 08:12:14 -0400 From: "Guy S. Kaiser" Subject: MM: re: Some questions Hi Hugues, I doubt that Patty will record these songs again, by leaving the record label A&M she lost the rights to all but 3 or 4 of the songs. Hopefully two of those were the two on the last Dixie Chicks CD and she made some profit. The only hope of a proper release of this CD is if A&M finally decides they can make money on it. Even then, the way CD mastering is going downhill these days there's a good chance they will trash it in an attempt for mass appeal. The compressed/downloaded mp3 copies floating around now are probably the best this generation will ever hear, a sad situation. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 May 2003 08:27:12 -0400 From: Bruce Righter Subject: MM: MM Sonic quality of "Silver Bell" I bought the promo copy of "Silver Bell" off eBay back when Patty was still with A&M and the CD was still scheduled for release. It just had the one new song "Silver Bell" on it (along with tracks from earlier CD's) but the sonic qualities were very disappointing: I had seen/heard Patty perform "Silver Bell" on Sessions at West 54th and looked forward to the machine-gun attack of the drum playing, but the promo CD sounded like oatmeal had been spread all over the drum kit. I wish one of the audiophile companies would be able to buy the master of "Silver Bell" and give it the sonic treatment it deserves (of course, the price would rise considerably). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 08:44:52 -0400 From: "Guy S. Kaiser" Subject: MM: MM Sonic quality of "Silver Bell" Is that the one with Silver Bell and Standing? I agree the quality was awful. If you look at a graph of the song Silver Bell you can see A&M maximized it to the extreme. I did see an official A&M promo cassette once on Ebay. It had songs from LWG & FR along with Boston and some other songs from Silver Bell. Someone in the UK bought it, I'm kicking myself for losing that. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 May 2003 09:03:23 -0400 From: Bruce Righter Subject: MM: Sonic quality of Silver Bell Guy, that's the one I think. I had forgotten about "Standing" being from "Silver Bell" as well. I recently got a 2 LP set from one of the audiophile labels--they had gotten rights to press Holly Cole's "Romantically Helpless" CD on quality vinyl. The original CD sounds good, but the vinyl sounds great. I wish some decent company could get a hold of the "Silver Bell" masters and make a CD sonically deserving of Patty's talents. (If a vinyl version would come out, I might wet my pants!) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 May 2003 09:40:22 EDT From: FlamingRed74@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: MM Sonic quality of "Silver Bell" For those talking about Silver Bell.. There IS the real original masters copy of Silver Bell that's also floating around. While the production is still "oatmeal-like" as someone else mentioned (I always say things like that sound like they were produced in a tin can.. LOL), it's much better than the MP3 quality one that I've heard. Also.. Patty has literally 5 or 6 dozen songs (or more) that have never seen the light of day of a national release. From what i understand, she can still choose about 4 more songs from Silver Bell to release one day.. it's just the matter of if she ever will. Normally she seems to prefer newer, fresher songs as opposed to rehashing old stuff. There are always a few exceptions to that rule (i.e. One More Girl on Silver Bell, Long Ride Home on 1,000 Kisses). What I'd like to see happen is one day whenever the world finally realizes that Patty is the greatest singer/songwriter of our time, the current record label that she's on should do a box set, dedicating 2, 3, even 4 CDs to the lost songs that many people never got to hear. Many of those songs are the very best stuff she's ever written, or right up there with it. That reminds me of Wilco's luck with "Yankee Hotel Foxtrot" - their label (Reprise) offered to the band to buy the rights of their record, so they could make it out through another label (Nonesuch). Maybe Patty one day can buy the rights of Silver Bell? Maybe she can also record these songs again without getting a dividende of the songwriting rights? Like a singer who would cover another artist - she would just have to ask her own authorization! Am I saying fool things? I totally ignore how all that works! :O) I'm wondering: she really CAN'T record her own songs again for some reasons of rights? I'd like to be enlightened about that. Thanks! I live in Austin and tonight there is a concert featuring Shawn Colvin and some other performers that is a benefit for the Lance Armstrong Foudation...anyway, there is a "suprise special guest" and I'm wondering if there is any chance it could be Patty. Does anyone know? I swear I won't tell!! I have a $50 ticket and I'm STRAPPED for cash and considering selling the ticket, but I will kick myself if I don't go and Patty IS the special suprise. My dog had an unexpected $1200 surgery this past Monday, so I could use the $50...so if anyone knows anything about this, please feel sorry for me and tell me. :) Patty AND Shawn would totally be worth eating Ramen for a month, but Shawn alone...I don't know...I really don't like Ramen and Shawn is playing Austin 3 times in May. Help, please!! I adore Patty and if I miss her, I will cry. :) Thanks, Heather ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 May 2003 17:10:34 -0400 From: SwimFairy13@netscape.net Subject: MM: You comma thank Wow. Thank you to all who replied to my monologue. As I explained to someone else...(uh....someone?) that was my rough copy that I had typed up, any flaws were fixed for the final performance. Not that it really matters to any of you...just to put the grammatically-inclined minds to rest. Heehee. I really really really want to meet Patty (still) and really really really want her to come up to Baltimore and play so I can actually see her. I can't go down to Texas or to California or anywhere but here. Sigh sigh. I think I have the whole meet-Patty thing rehearsed and ready to go. I will be in line for her autograph (she does do that, doesn't she? a little card table with her at the end and a really nice big sharpee?) and I'll have a pre-written letter in my pocket, which I will hand to her asking that she read it if not to get to know me, but to humour me. I will leave my address in the letter, and a few weeks later I will get a letter from her saying I am the most remarkable child she's ever read of, and she wants to take me out to lunch and then adopt me. Hee. Ok, so it's a little....alturistic is the word I think...but still..stranger things have happened. At the least she'll read about a younger fan who is dying to meet her, but respectful of her shyness. Hence, the written letter in which I go on and on about how I love her music, rather than hanging onto her arm and doing that. I am so brilliant it scares me sometimes. Insley Marie Griffin. So far I've gotten Flaming Red and 1000 Kisses....have listened to many songs from the first album also and plan to buy it soon. I've also downloaded some live stuff and it's so great...especially a version of "Mary" with Emmylou that I found today. I just cannot believe how phenomenal this woman's voice is and can't believe she didn't cross my path sooner. I absolutely love the sound of her voice and it is just so flawless even on such high notes. Listening to her just makes me so sad that I cannot sing at all and I can only imagine what it is like to open your mouth and have such sounds come out. I also am struck by the tremendous power of her songs....the sad ones are SO gut wrenching....I have Broken Things by Julie Miller and really love that album for some of the really heartwrenching melodies and Patty reminds me of her at times in this way. (I like Patty better, I have to say) Another thing that strikes me is the really great production on her records. 1000 Kisses is beautifully done with such surprising instruments and everything sounds SO put together. Flaming Red has a different, but really novel sound to it I think. That honky tonkish piano in "Peter Pan" with the bird sounds in the background...I find that to be very unique. Ugh, I'd give my right arm to see that Austin City Limits show again...I don't suppose it will be rerun for a while. I get their newsletter.....just FYI..Shawn Colvin is on tomorrow night. I just had to do some gushing. I am listening to Patty constantly and finding new things to appreciate all the time.
