Yup, 1 and 5 over and over. Exposure to America and to industry. Industry liked her a lot. Watch the comments from the judges again and you'll know that their enthusiasm was authentic, and that the 5's that they gave they were very happy to give. If Patty wrote monologues: Uh..I'm not up on the whole Darcie thing. I'm so sorry. I've been busy...anyway, Darcie dearest, WHO ARE YOU!? Don't be mad at me..I've just been, like I said, really really busy. They only showed Patty's Austin thing at one thirty am....and I even set my alarm so I could wake up to see it..but there was an odd man singing about painting his mailbox blue..so I gave up. I wish there were tapes! Also, I wrote a monologue that I think screams Patty Griffin. I don't know why. I wrote it while listening to her CDs...tell me if you agree: The character is Mary. (HMMM!) She is a housewife, it is the forties or so. She is seated in a kitchen, on one chair with a yellow-green cushion, horizontal to a table where a vase of flowers sits, and directly across from that is another chair, facing the inside of the table. She is dressed in a floral apron, her hair is pulled back, and there is a peice of paper on the table. Single spotlight on her. MARY: I know it's foolish of me to worry the way I do. I know he's perfectly safe where he is, and, even if he wasn't, there's nothing I could do about it. Still, it..it helps to hope and pray for him and the boy's safety. Everything is so different since he left a few months ago. I wake up in the morning, just as the sun seeps through the curtains...the off-white ones my mother made for us as a wedding gift. It used to be a lot different...I don't know...I mean, it changed. Not physically, the sun, that is, but...it's not the same as it used to be. When he was here, home, it would flood the room in the mornings, warm and happy, flitting about the room like a butterfly that just discovered it had wings. But now... It's cold, slow...lethargic. Almost syrupy. It's all I can do to get out of bed in the morning. I still sleep on the same side, and walk barefoot in the morning into the same kitchen, over the same meadow-flower linoluem floor. I make the same coffee with the same mug I've been using for three years now, read the same paper and type a little for the same church bulletin. But...I don't know. There's no one to talk to, no one to offer to do the dishes, even though I always end up doing them anyway. I've even had to hire a neighbourhood boy to cut the grass. My husband never did show me how that mower worked. I think...I think the rest of the girls, the ones down at the church...I think they're afraid of me. Or at least, afraid for me. Whenever I walk into a room, it gets silent suddenly. I still continue living my life as normal as possible, but...I think they're just worried if...well..you know... Things are getting better though. The war is almost over, at least, that's what I've been hearing. And I've been getting letters from him every few weeks. One poor girl up the street a little, a newly wed fresh out of school, she's only gotten one letter and her husband's been out for five months. Well, no news is good news I guess. His letters are the only thing that I can really count on, and that really bring me happiness. Only...well...the last letter that came...about two weeks ago...I haven't exactly opened it yet. Because...well...the writing on the envelope...it isn't his handwriting. It's nobody's handwriting. It's typed...and this time, there's a return address. END SCENE Hee. Was that alright? It's for my theatre class, and it just seemed rather Patty to me. I don't know. It's a good oppourtunity to actually cry on stage..or at least get a little teary.
