[Mike Connell Subject: MM: covering Patty and playing solo live Hi Julie, I play solo for one main reason now. I don't have the time to rehearse with a band right now nor do I have the patience any longer to deal with the wierdness some band members can cause...(i.e., arguing over trivial matters). The trade off is there's no one else on stage to share the butterflies with. To answer your question, you do have to force yourself out there. It may make you nervous at first but just remember that usually after the first two songs you'll settle down and start to play/sing better. Having the lyrics on a music stand in front of you can help you to not freak out about forgetting the words, but I'd avoid staring at the lyrics cuz then you don't get into the zone. I will only glance at them if I forget the next line. Sometimes when folks are staring at you, you might just close your eyes so you can concentrate on your sound but be careful to not smack your face into the mic when your eyes are closed, and really be careful to not sway and fall off your stool! (LOL). Or you can look over their heads to the back of the room. (sometimes a pre-gig beer can help you mellow out too.) You can also have a friend or two attend so you can chat with them between songs, that can help too. One of the best things to do is play a couple songs that will get the crowd to react favorably. Start with a couple familiar tunes that you know they will praise you for. Once you feel "the love", a LOT of your nervousness will vanish and you will find new zeal to do a killer job. And finally, rehearse all of the songs on your song list. Nothing worse than thinking, 'I know that song, I can skip rehearsing it' then you get out there and it becomes a train wreck. If you do mess up a song, don't show it...be cool and act like all is well...the audience often times won't even notice a couple goof ups. An warm up that voice before playing. Lots of water hours before the gig and doing vocal warmups helps. Good luck, and just do it! - -Steve >Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 01:31:16 +0000 >From: "Charles Ott" >Subject: MM: Re: I cover Patty, but only for friends ... so far >with a guy who wants to do open mikes and then possibly gigs, but he is >really busy, and, as so often happens, nothing is happening. As list-owner this presented a number of problems. Why I did not post on this topic before this occurred is simply because I was way too busy with a move to a new residence, plus a family situation that dominated nearly 100% of my free time. Anyway, I am back. Good news? Bad news? I am not sure. ;-) Without access to my mikec@smoe.org account, this did present a problem for many subscribers to this list. All posts to the list end up in one of two places. One, obviously the list and all of its' subscribers. The other place is my mikec@smoe.org account's inbox. All "rejected" posts get delivered to me for approval. Rejections, also known as bounces, happen for one of three basic reasons: 1) The post was rejected because the email address is not subscribed to this list, nor the digest version, nor the news version. ONLY subscribers to one of those three versions of this list can openly post to the main list. Posts from all non-subscribed addresses get sent to me for approval. Now, where this comes into play for some of you is when you send in a post from another email address that you have that is not subscribed to the list(s). They bounce to me and have to wait until I get it and can approve it. This can take a while as many rejected posts are also from spammers. More than 90% of the posts from non-subscribed addresses are from spammers, so you can see that with my running over 30 mailing lists, this can add up. (by the way, for the 19 days of not having internet access, I had 5,287 emails waiting to download when I finally was able to log on today...and I use dial-up....ouch). 2) The post hit a listserve software (majordomo) administrative restriction, that prohibits posts that contain a form of certain administrative command words (i.e. list owner stuff). You'd be amazed at how many people send the one-word "unsubscribe" post to the list rather than the proper email address for unsubscribing. The problem is that the function also rejects any post that has "subscribe" or "subscribers" anywhere in the message. So any post that innocently mentions subscribers or methods of subscribing to another list gets rejected. 3) The post can get rejected if it hits a specific filter that I myself have installed. These filters are installed for a variety of reasons. Most that hit these are innocent and get sent on. About 2 dozen or so of these got nailed in the last 19 days, and I will take a look at them soon. Any that were rejected since last Friday will get sent on as will any that were "news-worthy". The main reason for sending on all of these news posts, even if "old" news, is that I like to have that information in the lists archives for future reference. "Normal" posts sent before last Friday will likely be discarded, but there may be some exceptions depending on what I see when I begin to read these posts. Any questions or comments, please feel free to reply :-) Mike - Mad-Mission list owner :-) ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 15:44:39 -0700 (PDT) From: Breanna Subject: MM: Funny Stuff Hey MMers,This has nothing to do with Patty or music at all for that matter, but I just thought it was really funny. Ooops. No wait! You said "performed on national TV." Nevermind. Mike ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #119 *********************************
