At my regular solo gigs I cover The Long Ride, Top of the World, and now Rain. This past Saturday night was the first time I played Rain in public and I wondered how the crowd would like it...they had never heard it before and they loved it! I play it in the DADDAD tuning and it sounds great that way (although even without the capo some of the vocals are a bit of a stretch for me). Another benefit to playing it in this tuning is that right after Rain, I can jump into another favorite song, Suite Judy Blue Eyes, which is in the same tuning, (at least all live versions of it are in that tuning). By the way, I don't think I've ever introduced myself. I am a relatively new Patty fan. I've played semi-pro for many years and I write also, although after hearing Patty's songs I don't feel so good about my own songs anymore. After listening to the Chicks do Truth 2 and Top of the World, I finally decided to check out who Patty is. In the past 3 months I have bought all of Patty's CDs plus I nabbed Silver Bell. About the only CDs loaded into my players nowadays are Patty's. I think she is the greatest singer/songwriter of our time. I can't get enough of her. I'm going to drive half a state away this summer to see her at Strawberry Fest at Yosemite. Hey guys, Just a quick heads up.. The amazing Darcie Miner will be performing live on Star Search either THIS Wednesday or Friday evening, at 8pm EST. Since her MTV airdate has been pushed back to May 11th, THIS will now mark the first time that a MM lister has performed on national television (as far as I know). :-) So.. after you're done watching her blow everyone else out of the water, feel free to log on & vote for her so she can advance to the next round.. if that's how the show works, I'm not really sure?? All I know is you CAN vote for her. As soon as I know whether she's on Wednesday or Friday, I'll be sure to let you all know. Rock On Darc! Dave ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Apr 2003 01:31:16 +0000 From: "Charles Ott" Subject: MM: Re: I cover Patty, but only for friends ... so far I am dangerously close to learning every song on 'Living With Ghosts' and '1,000 Kisses', plus 'The Moon's Gonna Follow Me Home', 'A Place to Stand', 'Tony', 'Top of the World' and 'Change'. It is so incredible to play and sing songs of such caliber, to maybe take that high the song gives me and affect people the same way. I have played for audiences about a dozen times, but mostly for friends and family and pets. I am currently jamming with a guy who wants to do open mikes and then possibly gigs, but he is really busy, and, as so often happens, nothing is happening. I am resigning myself to the posibility that I may have to force myself to get out there alone. I think I can do it, I want to do it, but something gets lost from my living room to the stage. Maybe you guys who play out can help me here. I'll try to explain ... you know when you're playing and you're so zoned and so very much feeling the words, interpreting, your fingers on the strings strumming with perfect nuance, or power, it's just right. You are controling what is coming out of you (or through you), it's real, you know? But when people are watching, I find that control going out the window. It's sort of like I feel like I'm on a roller coaster, I sound descent, from hours of practice and all that, I can sing, but that control is not there. I know that I have to just get out there more and just do it, but do you guys have any tips, tricks words of wisdom? My friend John, who is not a singer but just a music lover (he turned me on to Patty as a matter of fact), says it's a zen thing, forget anyone's there, your alone in the livingroom. Is that a biggest part of it? My fear is definitely outweighed by the desire to do it. Anyway ... It is so great to read all your posts and know that I am not alone in my strong feelings for this woman's music, sometimes I think 'am I daft'? Music is just so important to me. I think we are all that way here. Take care, Julie _________________________________________________________________ MSN 8 helps eliminate e-mail viruses.
