I also cover Poor Man's House, Moses and what I call "a cover of a cover" when I sing Patty's version of Springsteen's Stolen Car. I generally do originals but throw in occasional covers. Patty's great to cover, 'cause you really get inside the emotion of the song (which I like to do anyway) and I find my voice has gotten stronger and more resonant from singing Patty stuff... The trailer sprawled across both lanes & the median , with the cargo spilling out across the rest of the median. Had it been narrower , I would have been in deep do-do. Got into Louisville & met up with fellow traveler Rob for the 4th or 5th time. Had lunch & got into Headliners a little after 4. Only 6 hours to go : ) Guess I was the most obvious Patty fan there with my Flaming Red boots & Flaming Red face. Wore my jacket to prevent any further damage to my Flaming Red arms. The concert was a benefit for the family of owner Rick Towles who passed away , & they had a number of donated items up for bid , including a guitar that was supposed to signed by Patty. I was thinking of bidding on it until I saw that the retail value was $1800-2000. It was supposed to be a silent auction with written bids submitted , but they opened the guitar for live bidding. My guess is they weren't satisfied with the $600 bid they opened up with. Eventually sold it for $1450 , but never mentioned during the bidding that Patty was supposed to sign it , & she was in & out of there so fast , I wonder if she ever did. There was quite a storm before Patty came in , & she was late to the point that her preceding act did 4 or 5 more songs than scheduled. Just Patty & Doug for this one. Set list : Let Him Fly The Long Ride Goodbye Christina Flaming Red Mary Encore 10 Million Miles Was delighted with the performance & setlist until Patty started saying her thank yous after FR. Six songs ! Say it ain't so Patty ! After Mary , she headed for the door so fast that one of the presenters had to sprint to the mike to suggest that we call her back for one more. I guess she had a flight to make. First 5 songs are concert favorites of mine and were done top-notch with the exception of Doug's rhythm playing sounding too loud & indistinct on FR. His licks during the song were fine , though. I don't remember specifically , but I assume it was during "Mary" that he had a swelling feedback problem that was long & loud enough that Patty slowed down & almost stopped singing. It was solved just in time. I imagine that I was still distracted by the disappointment of the short set. Kevin & I had a discussion about Doug's frequent technical difficulties the day before in Nashville. My most generous assessment is that the more you push the envelope , the more likely you are to run into snags. At the end of "Mary" , Patty suggested that we all sing along with the la-la-las in tribute to Rick. Glad I didn't sing along , as Patty's ending was the best in memory. I wonder if she felt more relaxed b/c she didn't feel so much in the spotlight with everyone singing along. "10 Million Miles" is also a favorite & was also a highlight for me b/c I think Patty looked directly at me for a second or 2 with no hint of disapproval on her face : ) All performers were asked to relate a story about Rick , & Patty added her contribution , saying that during her early years , a lot of people didn't think much of her , & made her feel like she didn't belong. Rick was one of those who supported her & made her feel like she did belong. Makes me wonder about the perceptions of those in the business. Patty's music has been consistently great from her earliest to her most recent. I can understand those whose favorite genres lie elsewhere , & don't like Patty's music , but anyone who says she doesn't belong is seriously impaired when it comes to musical sensibilities. She added that Rick was one of the many "Angels" she has found in her life , who supported her & helped her make through tough times. Too many other acts to mention , I believe they were all locals , & big-hearted Patty was only non-local national act there. They ranged from mediocre to excellent , with Jeff Black ( I think ) , the act preceding Patty being the class of the lot. Was a little annoyed with the constant conversational din intruding on many of his quiet , serious songs where silence should be part of the song. Rob & I headed out , & as I got into his car , the automatic seat belt raked right across my blistered nose , easily breaking the sun damaged skin. Now I understand the phrase , " It's no skin off of my nose ". : ) Wasn't too captured by driving music this trip , except for a short stint heading out of Louisville , where a little Heart ( Crazy on You , How Deep it Goes , Love Alive & Dreamboat Annie ) , & Natalie Merchant ( Life is Sweet , Thick as Thieves ) had me focused. They told you life is hard Misery from the start It's dull , it's slow , it's painful But I tell you life is sweet In spite of the misery There's so much more , be grateful Natalie Merchant "Life is Sweet" Don ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Apr 2003 18:10:23 -0400 From: SwimFairy13@netscape.net Subject: MM: question...
