Still no respect. Some what's-his-name weatherman from a local station opened the stage to announce the line-up , including Patty Griffith. I watched for him to let him know , but only saw him from a distance & assumed that Patty was known well enough in Nashville that someone on the staff would fill him in. Wrong ! He got up & did it again. I waited until he was finished talking & motioned him off the stage. I said "It's Griffin , with an n ". He looked at his copy , which was apparently correct , & said " Oh... yeah.... , Griffith .. Griffin " , after which I perceived an unspoken , "whatever" , & an unexpressed shrug. Got to the venue at 11:30 after driving all night & sleeping an hour in the car. Found a parking spot , & there didn't seem to be very many , so I stayed put & found my spot up front. First thing I did was call home & boast that I was in Nashville where it was 80 degrees & sunny. What a treat to be seeing a Patty show in the bright sunshine after a dreary , cold , hanging-on-too-long , Pgh winter. Broken up only by a Patty headliner in January. After about a half hour , my elation was tempered by the realization that sunblock never crossed my planning-challenged mind. Hooked up with Nashville fan Kevin before Patty came on. He let me use his sunblock , but too little , too late , the damage was done. My lily white German-English skin hadn't seen strong sun for quite awhile , & I was fried. Full band , with Doug & Michael , drummer Brian Owings , & new stand-up bassman , Luis Guerra. She expertly rolled the R's in Guerra , prompting an exchange of big smiles between her & Michael. Set list : The Long Ride Making Pies Rain Chief Be Careful Tony Mil Besos Mad Mission Truth # 2 Mary "Long Ride" was excellent but a little uneven for some reason. "Making Pies" was surprisingly good coming that early in the set. Usually her best versions of MP are when it comes later in the set. While the music in "Chief" seemed a little less robust than usual , everything else went well until "Tony" , which was ( as often happens ) , the highlight of the set. She poured herself into it. When she does that , I can usually tell , along with the sound , by her animated movements. "Tony" is one song where the music is usually very strong , but always complements the vocals rather than intruding on them. "Mil Besos" & "Mad Mission" were both high-spirited & excellent. When they started in on "Truth # 2 " , something didn't sound right , & I looked over at Doug to see him tuning his guitar. No idea what happened there. When he finally came in , Patty got all happified , & they finished nicely. I seem to be growing numb to "Mary" lately b/c I've heard it so often , & the music never seems to capture the ethereal sound that matches Patty's the way the FR music did. The last time I heard it ( at the Ryman ) , Emmylou's & Julie's harmonies lifted it up. Mildly disappointed that there were no solos or new songs. I thought she was doing some writing for a new CD. Excellent , varied line-up for Earth Day.Made my gradually burning skin bearable. Hakim Rahsul , an excellent jazz band that did a knockout version of "Killing Me Softly" , & another cover that I was very familiar with , but couldn't pin down the name. Slightly irritated with the seemingly mandatory requirement of jazz bands to have each musician perform a long solo , expecting applause for each one. There are many thousands of good-to-great individual musicians , but very few compositions that can get inside you & move you. Long , stand- up bass solos border on the ludicrous. Victor Mecyssne , semi-serious music , comedic lyrics. Bonepony , lead singer & lyrics infused with an infectious joy. One of their instruments was an empty Budweiser bottle , horizontal on a short wooden stand. The string man played it by tapping it with his bow. Los Lobos was disappointing b/c my expectations were high after hearing good things about them from a number of people. Good , but not outstanding. Through much of their set , every instrument was playing at max intensity & volume , making even 2 vocalists sound like background noise. Loud & powerful , but so is a train wreck. Throw in a polka & an Italian love song that made me think of a "Godfather" scene , & it was not music up my alley. They did have a large , vocal , & appreciative audience , though. Had a long , alcohol-laced discussion with Kevin at the Flying Saucer after the show , affirming my perception that he's a very interesting intellectual & man of character. The few drinks probably not being too wise after driving all night & baking all afternoon , but it was a good day. At 11:30 , I opted to head out & sleep in the car. The next 8 to 10 hours were some of the most miserable in memory. Fortunately , as I get older , I take my misery much more stoically now. This too , shall pass. Fitful , on & off sleep with weird disturbing dreams. After the first short sleep , my hangover set in. My head hurt , my arms & face , especially my nose , had a burning pain , & my legs were sore from an exercise jaunt at a rest stop on the way to Nashville. The first time I went to the bathroom , I saw a bright red face that would put any lobster or beet to shame , more like radish red. My nose was dotted with pus- oozing blisters & peeling skin. I finally woke up for the last time , & panicked when I turned on the car , thinking it was after 2 b/c I took the "time elapsed" readout on my CD player for the actual time. Determined that it was before 12 & started the long process of returning to a normal state as I headed out for Louisville. Another eventful day in the never-ending battle for truth , justice , The American Way & Patty Griffin concerts. Parenthetically : ) , where are all the reviews ? When I got home , I had 79 E-mails & none were MM. I thought Bilbo had gone off the deep end again , causing Mike to shut down. Checked the archives , & there hasn't been a peep for the 3 days I was gone. I know , you're all waiting with bated breath to read my thrilling details , like my pussy ( uh oh ) , let's try.. pus-ey nose. Since I've held you hostage this long , I may as well report a few news items. Jazz great Nina Simone passed away Monday at her home in France. She was 70 years old. Often assailed audience members for being too loud , & once came out to an encore-demanding crowd & shouted " GO HOME ! " www.newsday.com/news/obituaries/ On a lighter note , actress Juliette Lewis , one of my favorite celebrity babes after Patty , files for divorce from her husband of 4 years , professional skateboarder Steve Berra. Hmmm... Quote taken from an article in the Monday edition of the Louisville Courier-Journal. My name is Linda and I just (with embarrassment) discovered Patty. I was flipping through the channels a couple of weeks ago and caught Austin City Limits....I was totally mesmerized. I had never seen her before even though I know she's been around here quite a bit-I live in Western MA. Anyway, when I saw/heard her perform Tony, I was hooked. I went right out and got Flaming Red and then 1000 Kisses. I like FR the most, but I think 1000 Kisses showcases her beautiful voice better. I also just won an Ebay auction of a promotional CD with several live songs on it-can't wait to get that. I'm planning on going to the GreenRiver festival this summer where Patty is performing-it will be the first time I see her live. I'm really looking forward to it. Some of the other artists I'm into are: Tori Amos(biggest obsession), Dar Williams, Julie MIller, Liz Phair, Howie Day and I'm really liking that band Coldplay. It's nice to find this list. The artists tend to be backgroud noise for a bunch of people just looking for something to do. We drove 10 hours from still very cold Michigan to enjoy Patty. The Earth Day Festival itself was disappointing but the weather was so great I was happy just hanging out and waiting for her to go on stage. I was actually surprised that she had the full band. Don has already listed her set list and given a full review. Sorry to hear you got so burned....I'm thinking of going to the tanner here in Michigan to keep the nice tan I started over the weekend. I loved the heat and the sun. But Patty was certainly the highlight. She had commented on someones dog "Lucky" was the dogs name...I was a bit disappointed because my 3 year-old sang every word to Long Ride Home and had the audience around us watching her dancing more than the show! But Patty noticed the dog and dedicated the next song to Lucky and not the mother of the really cute kid having a great time at her first Patty show!!! *L* Peace to all, Tina K ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #112 *********************************
