I think I've seen her mentioned a few times. I had the pleasure of meeting her and seeing her perform on Friday. What a treat. First I saw her solo at a live radio broadcast (this is how I met Patty for the first time about a year ago too :) ) I live in Maine and we have this very cool radio station here that plays all of the super talented artists that all of us on this list appreciate so much. Whenever an artist comes to town (like Dar, Patty, martin sexton, beth orton, bruce cockburn, david gray etc.) they have a lunchtime concert/interview at the radio station and invite 10 listeners to come in and watch. It's a lot of fun because it's not like at a normal concert where the person makes a grand appearance sings their songs and leaves the stage. Here you see them show up and set up all of their stuff, warm up their voices, talk about set list, hang out after, etc. AND when they're singing you're about 3 feet away from them. So I was selected to come in to the station this past friday to see Dar (& the Ben Taylor Band too). Dar is pretty new to me actually and I was definitely impressed. I liked her music a lot, but I also just thought she seemed like a really nice and down to earth person. She was very talkative and willing to chat with all of us after the set. Of course we got our CD's signed & pictures too :) She talked a lot about living in NYC and how she always thought she was a country girl, but is now realizing that the city is the place for her. During the interview the DJ asked her about her comment about eavesdropping on people that she put in the liner notes of the new CD. She talked about this one specific place that she goes in NYC all the time- even mentioned it by name and said some funny things about how she was basically inviting people to stalk her since she's always there. She talked about NYC making her kind of see the big picture in comparison to where she used to live in Massachusetts. In the college town in Massachusetts she said that it was an atmosphere of people trying to figure out how to change the world and really looking at everything in a deep and introspective way. Now in NYC she sees people just trying to get by and "survive public transportation". It doesn't leave as much time to sit and figure out the meaning of everything. She seems very happy and talked about her husband a lot. She said that she was worried that the songs would stop coming to her once she was happy, but she doesn't believe the the whole you have to be depressed to be creative thing and she's doing just fine with continuing to write. I hadn't ever seen her in person before, I didn't realize that she was so tiny. My friend and I got a picture with her and felt like we were towering over her. Oh...the songs she performed at the radio station: I saw a bird fly away Mercy of the Fallen Beauty of the Rain The One Who Knows Spring Street (she let the audience pick the last song- and the two big requests were spring street and when I was a boy- Dar said the rocker won out since she had just done a ballad) After Dar performed we all waited around to see Ben Taylor (son of James Taylor if you're not familiar) come in and do his radio show. He was supposed to go on first, but his bus lost about about 45 minutes north of Portland somehow. So by the time he arrived a lot of the listeners that were there had to leave and go back to work. So it was a pretty small group for the set. It was also a treat. I really liked seeing him sing with just a guitarist and another band mate using his guitar case as something to hit like a drum. I was impressed and glad that I bought their CD. They did a song that's not on the album and I think that one was clearly the best one they did. So the next album should be excellent. After the set we stayed around to talk to them. Nice guys, and they are very into having contact with the fans and being out on tour. None of the girls I was hanging out with there had tickets for that evenings Ben Taylor and Dar show, but by the time we left we had Ben's tour managers cell phone # and some tickets from the radio station. Between getting a couple of tickets from the band and a couple from the radio station...we all had a ticket to get in that night. We ended up with the best seats in the house. The show that night was a blast. I was even more impressed with Dar than I was at the radio station. She was excellent! Her band was fabulous! At the end of the show she was thanking everyone for coming and she pointed out me and two of my friends. That was a neat moment. She remembered one name and stumbled on the other two...we reminded her and she told everyone that she had met us earlier in the day. It was impressive that she even remembered us and took the time to say hello. She had her husband there and some other family as well. It was a very exciting day. Much like how I was on cloud nine after having a similar day seeing Patty G. at the radio station and then later at a concert last April. Only with Patty I've been an all out fan forever and with Dar it was something new for me. On Saturday I called Ben's tour manager to thank him for the tickets and just tell then that we had a great time. They invited us to come down to the show in Boston that night. Gosh I would have loved to see both bands again, but I had plans already and couldn't go. It was nice to have the invite though. Just thought I'd share in case there are any Dar fans on the list! Is this true? I am driving with my family from MI to Nashville over Easter weekend. Patty is headlining at the Earth Day Fest. on Saturday. I didn't know she was doing another festival the same weekend. I'm hoping we'll hear some new songs! I can't wait!
