["Sarah S] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 14 Mar 2003 09:48:04 EST From: FlamingRed74@aol.com Subject: MM: NPC: Dixie Chicks to be banned from radio across U.S.?? Hey guys, This may stir the pot here a bit, but as I was driving to Maryland to pick up my dog from extensive spinal chord surgery yesterday, I heard that Natalie Maines is making headlines again for yet another *questionable* (stupid?) outburst. Apparently the Chicks are playing a tour right now in the U.K. Obviously playing on the Anti-America sentiment that's riding high in Europe right now, Maines stated (among other things) that she was "embarrassed & ashamed to be from the same state as the U.S. President Bush who is so adamantly supporting military action against Iraq". When her quote was announced on certain radio stations who play the Chicks across the country, those stations were bombarded by phone calls & emails from listeners saying how horrified they were at what she said. A good percentage of callers said they would not only stop listening to the stations who played her music, but also never buy another Dixie Chicks album again. Mainly these callers & emailers point is that she can have those feelings, and she has the freedom of speech.. but why say it in such a hateful way while OVERSEAS, instead of keeping those kind of rants or feelings "in house"? The program director that was being interviewed on the radio yesterday said they're having a poll, and if enough people want the Chicks banned, they will possibly refrain from playing their music on that station, and quite possibly many others. What I also find interesting/questionable about this, is that this little rant comes on the heels of the Chicks newest single (about a soldier going to war), which was written long ago.. but is just now conveniently being released..?? Excuse me, but am I the only one that finds it extremely irritating for her to be capitalizing (big time $$$) on the fact that we ARE about to go to war, yet at the same time she's ashamed to be from the same state where the U.S. president is from? ..hmm...?? This is one thing I hope a journalist has the "balls" to ask her about, because I'd love to hear her attempt to talk her way out of that one. Anyway.. I post this for 2 reasons. 1. I know there are some radio industry people on this list. I'm just wondering what kind of reaction they've gotten from listeners, or if it's just big news where I live because of being in prime country music listening territory.. LOL 2. I want everyone elses opinion on this. Basically all I've heard is negative.. & I know there are Chicks fans on MM. Maybe someone can help me understand her trying to benefit from the very thing she's speaking so openly against. Not only just speaking out against, but speaking hatefully about.. I realize the Chicks are the hottest thing going in country music right now.. therefore they're under a microscope for everything they do & say.. but this entire thing just rubs me the wrong way. Especially knowing that Patty writes half their freaking songs for them.. it makes me worry (probably unnecessarily) about her even being affiliated with them. Although I'm unsure of what (if any) negative impact there could be on her. They shouldn't have their music banned because of a singer's comment. If people are that offended, they should stop supporting the band, but for radio stations to actually ban the music is to me just as dumb as Maine's purposeless comment. - ---What I also find interesting/questionable about this, is that this little rant comes on the heels of the Chicks newest single (about a soldier going to war), which was written long ago.. but is just now conveniently being released..?? --- Hmm, that's an interesting point, too. You can almost hear the execs behind the scenes mapping out their strategy, saying, "Yeah, this song will work great once the war's started, people will love it, it'll really tug at their heart strings." It's still a good song, though. But I also hope a journalist will ask them about that. I'm sure they won't, however. I think people are just sick of celebrities thinking their fame and wealth also gives them divine right to a bully pulpit to spew their usually uninformed politically correct views. What I also despise, even though I'm not Bush's biggest fan, is how Bush is often cast in the role of evil despot, while Saddaam, one of our time's biggest human rights violaters, is labeled the helpless victim who should be left alone. Go to the Amnesty International web site and read about Hussein and his history of torture and abuse. Where is the indignation about this from the same people who think Bush is the second coming of Hitler? And I know hypocrisy exists on all sides of this debate.... Everything's so agenda-driven, and it just gets more and more frustrating trying to have unbiased arguments or debates about these sorts of topics. I respect the Chicks as musicians and like most of their music, but I do find Maines' comments to be another case of a celebrity who's starting to get a little too full of themselves. www.thedissidents.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Mar 2003 07:38:34 -0800 From: "Pipkin, Heather D." Subject: MM: RE: NPC: Dixie Chicks to be banned from radio across U.S.?? I for one will still buy their music. As an American she has the right express her opinion, it's the whole point of FREEDOM. Otherwise, what is the difference between living in the USA and living in Iraq where she isn't allowed to express an anti-government opinion? Also, you don't have to agree with everything an artist says in order to enjoy their music. Honestly, I think the radio stations are stupid anyway, they play the same 20-30 songs to death until you just want to gouge your eyes out with a fork when you hear them. Meanwhile, amazing artists like Patty get hardly any radio play because stations are to busy repeating the same songs over and over and over. That is the real tragedy...we should be focusing on that issue. I for one listen to CD's instead of the radio. My feelings about this (I had not heard about it until this post) is that war is a very touch subject. There are so many points that people can make for and against that are good points. Me, I'm against the war. And I'll speak out about it. I'll even say I'm ashamed - at times - of our country. (um, hello...have you heard about the "freedom fries" in the frickin' House of Reps!?). I do think that people who have fame and a lot of notoriety should use that wisely. It can be a good thing to use your fame for a good cause and to get your message out (a la Sheryl Crow and her "no war" guitar strap, etc.) - but one should also be cautious. Having said that - I don't really feel that the Chicks should be banned because of what Natalie said/says. For one thing, she is one third of the group - not the entire group. For another, the whole "she has a right to her opinion" point is valid. She does! I also think that she possibly was trying to make it known that just because she is American she is not necessarily affiliating her beliefs with what America is currently involved in. I mean, when I meet people from Canada (I live in Michigan,so Windsor-ites are close), I'm embarrassed! I can't imagine being famous and travelling abroad and feeling like I should justify my country's actions at a time like this. I'd probably make a statement like that too! I wouldn't want anyone to think "boo. that yukky american and their nasty war" - i'm a pascifist, man. :) Just watching "Bowling for Columbine" made me embarrassed of how we conduct ourselves compared to other countries/nations. Now, don't get me wrong. I'm also proud to be an American and grateful for the freedoms I do have. I'm not going there. I'm just embarrassed about the current situation and some of the ways that we Americans are so hot-tempered. I dunno... there's a lot involved in this subject and I could go on several tangents. Basically, I don't think someone's political opinion should get their art banned from places that otherwise praised them. I mean, this country was founded on the idea of different opinions and beliefs coming together...it was founded on a democracy voicing your concerns or objections...and now when people do that, they're considered "un-American!" Blah. This whole topic and situation makes me sad. Make love, not war. Get down, make love. Give peace a chance. and all that ol' sheeit...
