But, I have played lots of open mike nights. I remember my feeling at the first one - the sweating, the freaking out, etc. It was horrible! I forgot lyrics - ugh! HOWEVER, It got so much better after that. Not that I wasn't nervous, but like you said, I knew what to expect. Anyway, congratulations! It is a great step. I wish I was closer to NY so I could come see you play (I am in in Pittsburgh). Best of luck! I just got back from debut gig. What a disaster!!!!! Or atleast it felt like that anyway. It's hard to be objective about it when your doing it but I was so overwhelmed. My mind was raceing, i couldn't let go of the mistakes that I made, I began sweating profusely, and I felt trapped on stage. It was scary! By the time I settled in it was over. It was a great experience tho, and I learned a lot. It's all a process of growth. Next time I'll prepare better and know what to expect. The important thing is that I did it! Tonight I fulfilled a dream that I've had for over 10 years, and I'm proud of that. It also makes me appreciate Patty that much more. It's so hard to just do things right when your up there, never mind captivating an audience. She is amazing at it. I wish I had 1% of waht makes her great. Anyway, thanks again for the support. Until next time...Mike - ------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 16:12:06 +0000 From: adamk@zoom.co.uk Subject: MM: new music I thought I'd add something constructive, rather than just snipe from the sidelines, so here's my contribution to anyone looking for new(ish) music along Patty veins: Eileen Rose. Her last album, "Long Shot Novena", got fantastic reviews. I only have her debut, "Shine Like It Does", and it's pretty impressive. Kind of like Marianne Faithful singing country rock. Tom McRae. He's English. His eponymous debut was stunning, a really heart- breaking, gut-wrenching thing of beauty. His follow up, "Just Like Blood", has also had phenomenal reviews, but I find it much tamer and actually rather forgettable. Pina. An Austrian/Irish singer/songwriter who I saw opening for the Indigo Girls last year. Her debut, "Quick Look" is out on Real World records. She has a really distinctive voice, somewhere between Melanie and Marianne Faithful, but her accent and emphasises (?) sometimes render the lyrics incoherent. Great album, though. adam k. - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Mar 2003 09:29:24 -0800 (PST) From: David T Subject: Re: MM: new music I'll come off the sidelines and add something (hopefully constructive). I have two favorite artists. There is Patty, and then there is... Emm Gryner: mostly a pop sound but some serious lyrics, especially in her "Science Fair" and "Public" CDs. She mostly performs on keyboards, but plays guitar on a few tracks per CD. If you like 80's rock, you'll enjoy a CD of covers she produced, "Girl Versions". Visit her web site, www.emmgryner.com to hear samples and purchase her music. (Sorry if I sound like an infomercial! But in my opinion, she is tops) If you like Tom Waits, check out Holly Cole's "Temptation". Even if you don't like Tom Waits, but like good writing, her "Temptation" CD is a tribute to his music--15 or 16 covers. You hear so many different influences, and he's an expert at them all. Sure sounds like he loves music. Mostly though, I think he's an expert at getting the real stuff in there... tears, laughter, confusion, joy, loneliness... all that and more...in a style that makes you feel like you just had the most amazing time hanging out with one of your best friends."
