I'm not typically a bluegrass fan (I don't know any of their other music, but the song they played last night was bluegrass), but they were pretty good. Each one of them is clearly very skilled at their respective instruments. - -----Original Message----- From: Booms, Holly [mailto:HBooms@Tickets.com] Sent: Thursday, February 27, 2003 4:52 PM To: mad-mission@smoe.org Subject: MM: RE: Robinella & the CC String Band I saw these guys at the Chicago taping of the PBS Soundstage television show two weeks ago...and it was opened by a short set in the beginning by a new act called "Robinella & The CC String Band", which features a bunch of young college friends. They had a manodlin, stand up bass, guitar, and violin player, plus a lead singer (the lone female, Robinella) on the guitar. They're all young (early 20's) and in tee shirts & tennis shoes, a bit nervous but obviously loving making music together. Robinella has strangely dyed hair, and a blank expression on her face, in a vintage tee, most of the time she just looked terrified and a bit trailer trash...and then she'd SING with that velvet voice. They were described as "jazz grass" by the announcer and the actual intrument playing was surprising (REALY GOOD mandolin & violin)...though the lead singer sounded like Norah Jones, breathy, husky, club singer vocals with a heavy hillbilly accent...weird. My friend compared her voice to Nina Simone's. They were recently signed by Columbia Records, and supposedly they will be doing a lot of promotion for them in the near future. New, green, but not half bad, either. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 10:05:36 EST From: PMcfad@aol.com Subject: MM: Re: hem sounds like dido in a nickle creek sort of way. pat ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 08:41:17 -0800 (PST) From: Jon Crouse Subject: Re: MM: Patty says thanks for the birthday Drive` That's pretty great :) I'll crack open the checkbook for that. Well.. why should I tell you, take it from her: Dear friends: It has been brought to my attention that some of you have been making donations to the VVAF, the group that has created the Committee to Abolish Landmines, and sponsors the Concerts for a Landmine Free World that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of. I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this. I already knew you guys were great. Now I'm just blown away. These are very troubled times in the world. It is sometimes difficult to look past our own immediate concerns with so much looming over our heads right now. That you would remember the very great struggle of those you do not know personally at this particular time in our history, is incredibly moving to me, and gives me heart and hope. You have long been reminders to me of the graciousness and beauty that we are all capable of. I am honored. love, Patty I think that should inspire those of you who haven't contributed yet to maybe do so :-) - - Jen ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ AIM: traDMB http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~jcaputo Yahoo! He's been making a few tv appearances and some people are trying to compare him to John Mayer or Dave Matthews. I think he's a lot more creative than both of those artists and he definitely has a wider range vocally. If you haven't checked out his live cd released independently of electric records, i suggest checking it out. It's a lot less polished than his latest and really amazing. - -shannon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 17:15:08 -0500 From: "Booms, Holly" Subject: MM: Patty Griffin Birthday Drive update 2/28/03 THANKS to some new generous donations, probably due to Patty's early thanks for her birthday gift ...I am happy to report that the Patty Griffin Birthday Donation Drive has already amassed over $670.00 in donations! If I were a stalker-fan, I'd get it. Since I'm not, it's just freaking me out. Anyway, I can't remember much of it except for the last bit, where I see her waiting backstage at some outdoor venue, and she's wearing a wedding dress. And she looks incredibly happy. But it's still strange that she's wearing a wedding dress to go onstage. So as I thought about it this morning, it brought to mind the song "Rain." She always talks about the rain itself in interviews, but I was thinking about how in love she seemed to be when Flaming Red came out. I always wonder if that was the relationship she's referring to..."I'm not looking for the rest of your life, I just want another chance to live." Anyway, just a bit of randomness...I seem to have a dream about her every few weeks.
