They had a manodlin, stand up bass, guitar, and violin player, plus a lead singer (the lone female, Robinella) on the guitar. They're all young (early 20's) and in tee shirts & tennis shoes, a bit nervous but obviously loving making music together. Robinella has strangely dyed hair, and a blank expression on her face, in a vintage tee, most of the time she just looked terrified and a bit trailer trash...and then she'd SING with that velvet voice. They were described as "jazz grass" by the announcer and the actual intrument playing was surprising (REALY GOOD mandolin & violin)...though the lead singer sounded like Norah Jones, breathy, husky, club singer vocals with a heavy hillbilly accent...weird. My friend compared her voice to Nina Simone's. They were recently signed by Columbia Records, and supposedly they will be doing a lot of promotion for them in the near future. New, green, but not half bad, either. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Feb 2003 08:27:53 +1030 From: "Danny Wallace" Subject: MM: Re: New Artists I've Been Listening to Lately > Gemma Hayes - She's Irish and you'll probably have to buy her stuff as imports in the US, but you > won't regret it if you do. I don't know who to compare her to, but she has a beautiful voice and > beautiful songs. If you like Beth Orton or Mazzy Star, you'd definitely like her. I would describe her as a mellow version of juliana hatfield - her album night is on my side is kinda similar to Beautiful Creature (you should all check this one out too!). Some of her songs are a little like pj harvey's mellower songs too, in that that are very atmospheric....about half of her album is produced by dave fridman (flaming lips & mercury rev producer) which gives you some idea what you are in for. awesome singer, and her album is great too. danny ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 17:43:02 -0600 From: "Jennifer Caputo" Subject: MM: Patty says thanks for the birthday Drive` Hey guys, Patty has been made aware of the birthday drive and she is completely blown away. Well.. why should I tell you, take it from her: Dear friends: It has been brought to my attention that some of you have been making donations to the VVAF, the group that has created the Committee to Abolish Landmines, and sponsors the Concerts for a Landmine Free World that I have been fortunate enough to be a part of. I just wanted to thank you from the bottom of my heart for this. I already knew you guys were great. Now I'm just blown away. These are very troubled times in the world. It is sometimes difficult to look past our own immediate concerns with so much looming over our heads right now. That you would remember the very great struggle of those you do not know personally at this particular time in our history, is incredibly moving to me, and gives me heart and hope. You have long been reminders to me of the graciousness and beauty that we are all capable of. I am honored. love, Patty I think that should inspire those of you who haven't contributed yet to maybe do so :-) - Jen ~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~ AIM: traDMB http://www-personal.engin.umich.edu/~jcaputo ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 19:28:28 -0500 From: "F&L Garvey" Subject: MM: Re: Patty says thanks for the birthday Drive` Wow - how cool is that.
