Subject: RE: MM: Re: New music /Sheryl Crow >An interesting thread perhaps - "Was I high when I bought this?" I love this idea. Tortoise - TNT - I know I'm going to catch flak for this one. I just don't get the music. I mean, I like some relatively odd music, but this stuff is way out there, and it's supposed to be their most accessible album. Yikes. The Spent Poets - (Self titled) - I saw them open for Live in the summer of '92 and thought they were decent. Apparently their music doesn't translate well in the studio because the album is downright awful. Good thing it's hard to find, very few people will be subjected to the horror that is this CD. Tricky - Pre Millennium Tension - Too weird, just too weird. Jewel - Spirit - Ah, our favorite topic. I actually liked her first album. The majority of it was recorded in a coffee house, which I found endearing. They were good songs and let's face it, she's got a great voice. But her second album bit the big one. Actually, it bit it, broke it off, chewed it up and swallowed it. The Cure - Bloodflowers - Highly anticipated, highly disappointed. I was crushed to hear such a steaming pile come from (arguably) my favorite group of all time. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 09:46:12 -0500 From: "Willms, Gregory J." But I had to let you guys know about some of the great stuff I've heard lately. Gemma Hayes - She's Irish and you'll probably have to buy her stuff as imports in the US, but you won't regret it if you do. I don't know who to compare her to, but she has a beautiful voice and beautiful songs. If you like Beth Orton or Mazzy Star, you'd definitely like her. Sondre Lerche - A cute Norwegian kid who sings cute little songs. His album is called "Faces Down" and it's downright adorable. He reminds me of a young version of Badly Drawn Boy (who I also love!). Martina Sorbara - A Canadian singer/songwriter whose album "Cure for Bad Deeds" was produced by Jian Gomeshi of Moxy Fruvous. Her voice vaguly reminds me of Ani, but that's the only similarity. Probably the best bet for people on this list who only like folky singer/songwriter stuff. Nerina Pallot - Another one you probably won't find in stores, because it's only been released in Europe. Her CD was one of my absolute favorites from last year. She has this beautiful, crystal clear, piercing voice that I just love and her songs are more on the pop side but it's very well-produced pop! Robinella & the CC String Band - I saw this group open for Kasey Chambers at the Belcourt, and we are definitely going to hear more from them. I think I read a review in the paper calling it "jazzgrass" because it's bluegrass instruments (mandolin, fiddle) mixed with an upright bass and jazz guitar sounds... Not to mention Robinella's drop dead gorgeous voice, which is somehow jazz sounding despite her thick Southern accent. I don't have any of their CDs because I can't find them in stores, but I'm going to have to break down and buy one off the website. Well, that's all I can think of for now... Has anyone else heard of these folks, and if so -- what do you think?? - -Misty ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 2003 10:06:48 EST From: PMcfad@aol.com Subject: MM: Re: pretentious i was surprised to see this word via radiohead and pink floyd. i actually had to look it up to make sure it was what i thought. the definition was... pretentious - adjective attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed: a pretentious literary device. i guess i have a hard time telling where a band is actually affecting an importance or merely attempting to. when i hear the depth of despair in thom yorke's voice whe he says..'we hope that you choke' in ...exit music for a film....i think he actually hit the emotion right on and radiohead has always impressed me as having a very real sound with explosive emotions that build and diminish. but, i must admit, i'm a fan of radiohead and listen something of their's every week. ok computer is probably my favorite. i've not listened to pink floyd in several years but they were a band that i liked more in their later years than in their early years. i could maybe see them being more pretentious than radiohead...but again, i think they were genuine in their attempts. i've never heard of sigur ros until this week. i pulled down a couple of songs and liked them. they are very different in my opinion from radiohead...though i could see how kid a or amnesiac might not support that statement. i'd put other groups like doves....or remy zero more in their category. i still think radiohead has more of a grunge strain in them....or punk....or venomous maybe is a better description. everyone says they're charming people in person but their music has a nastyness to it...again, in my opinion. in comparison to patti....i could maybe see someone calling them pretentious. she's pretty naked in her songs with very little affectations....still emotional....but much more direct and simple. other artists that i like that remind me of her style are richard thompson and johnatha brooke. richard thompson is very talented and performs solo acoustic alot like patti....but he's more cryptic and hidden in his lyrics. pat > #2) Or perhaps not. Again ...no offense to Sheryl Crow ...but the girl is like the Mayor of the Music Scene. She shows up at just about every televised music special and every artist tribute concert. She's often on magazine covers. She's everywhere with everyone. She and her promotions or publicity folks do a good job of keeping her in the public eye...and therefore popular with her fellow musicians/artists as well as the public. And I have to wonder if that has anything to do with all those Grammy votes...not to take away from any of her true talents...which I'm sure must have a little something to do with it also.
