At one point she asked for requests. This is the best time to get her to play one of her "shtick songs". I don't think she did any up until someone requested "Dave's Holiday". Even then she had to be coaxed. I miss her singing "At the Mall". It reminds me of something Lily Tomlin might do. I was obsessed with "Plumb" for about a year before listening to Patty - I was also trying to learn the guitar for Jonatha's stuff - damn is it hard. So listening and playing to Patty was a much better fit for me. I have Steady Pull, 10 cent Wings also. Not as good as Plumb to me. OK!!! onward on my search for a new musician to listen to - lot's of great suggestions. Although last night someone emailed me and suggested Michelle Malone, and YES she is awesome!! I saw her in concert and if anyone wants to see someone kick as* - check her out. Technically, Plumb was his first solo album after she and Jennifer Kimball parted ways, even though she used the "Story" name in the title of Plumb. > Jennifer Kimball is another one folks might enjoy. Her album "Veering from the Wave" was well-done for a first solo effort. It does take some patience -- it has some unusual chord progressions/harmonies --- trademark Story stuff... > And if you like poetic to avant garde, all I have to say in Jane Siberry. Probably one of the most diverse artists I know (as to the style of what she puts out) -- dislike some albums, couldn't live without others. Quirky genius. IMO, "When I Was a Boy" (the album, not Dar's song) is a masterpiece. > Dave > "Willms, Gregory J." wrote: > > > For something a little more closely related to Patty's > style of music, maybe check out Jonatha Brooke. I like a couple songs on it, but jeez, could the damn thing be any longer? Recommendations you may disregard as freely as you do my above-stated opinion: Aimee Mann, Michael Penn, Bic Runga, Andy Stochansky, Neko Case and/or the New Pornogrpahers, Sinead Lohan, Carrie Akre or the bands she's fronted (Goodness, The Rockfords, one I can't remember the name of), Beulah, Ron Sexsmith, and Jump, Little Children Um... Patty content... umm... do you think she'll ever do a full out rockin' project like FR or SB again? I love the folky stuff, but I must admit I miss rockin' Patty. I was quite surprised to see in the liner notes to "Red = Luck" that they both sung on one cut together. Either they dubbed their parts separately or someone must've had a big spray bottle on-hand to quell the cat-fight... ;-p For those of you in Chicago, Patty (Larkin) is playing the Old Town School on May 5th. I'm not sure how many people will see my suggestions as credible after > my recent Ryan Adams/White Stripes/Wilco bashing, but hey, what the heck. There is nothing wrong with Ryan Adams bashing....I like a fair bit of his music, but my main problem with him is he comes across as being incredibly insincere.....he tries to sound like the sensitive heartbroken guy in his music, but his behaviour suggests he is an arrogant jerk. Unlike Patty where it is perfectly obvious all her emotion etc in her music is genuine. Recommendation - The Waifs - Up All Night. I haven't heard any of her older stuff. A friend just gave me some Michelle Shocked and Danielle Howle. Both are pretty good. I really enjoy anything or any band that Lisa Marr is attached to. So far, Cub, Buck, The Lisa Marr Experiment, and The Beards. She's a great songwriter with a great voice and she dabbles in many different genres. Also, I am in love with Bettie Serveert, a band from Amsterdam. They just released a new CD called Log 22 which is great. Beth Orton is pretty great too. She does a song with (the notorious) Ryan Adams and one with Emmy Lou Harris on her new album, Daybreaker. If you want any more details on any of these, just let me know. Someone mentioned their local watering hole in characterizing his stage presence and musical ability. I couldn't agree more, I've seen as good or better at open mic nights. He has "one hit wonder" written all over him. His song strikes me as a novelty piece with very limited shelf life. His problem is his voice and phrasing is much to one dimensional and much too similar to Dave Matthews. I don't think there is room for more than one Dave Matthews. Sheryl Crow's performance was the most satisfying for me. The others had a real Grammys formula feel to them in some cases and a run of the mill quality in others. I suspect Madison Square Garden may be the culprit. New broadcast technology shields the television audience from that venue's severe acoustical deficiencies, but the live audience is detached from the performances by a sinkhole of echo and crowd noise.
