As do many print media, they also pick who they think should win and who they think will win. About Patty's nomination category, the USA Today says: Should win: Griffin made a masterful album Will win: Event albums such as the Chieftains' "Nashville" colaboration allows lots of acts to share the glory - including, in this case, Griffin. It is my strong opinion that we, as a group who trades Patty's music, ought to give back either directly or indirectly to the artist who provides us with so much enjoyment. Everytime you listen to "Silver Bell" or trade a concert recording, you, in essence, take from Patty. It is bad karma (forgive the expression) to merely take and not give back to the source that is so generously feeding you. Holly has set up a wonderful opportunity for those of us who have not re-paid Patty. Patty, obviously, is 100% behind the landmine issue, and if you ever were to indirectly reward her for all the joy she brings the world, then this is the way. It pains me to hear with all of the people who eagerly covet her bootleg recordings, we can only muster $195.00 among us. Even if you are poor, you can still send SOMETHING and poverty (or in some cases, the claim of poverty) should never be a bar to doing the right thing (bring on the controversy). I simply don't understand this lack of reaction. Perhaps all of us are contributing in ways that are not apparent to me. If so, I would love to hear about them. I was hoping for an alternative charity that isn't as controversial as land mine free world. I was thinking of an AIDS charity or a CHILDREN'S charity. I don't know what other charities Patty supports so if anyone out there can give me an idea that would be great. thanks, kim ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 2003 10:52:50 -0800 (PST) From: "Sean and Rebecca" Subject: Re: MM: Land mine contributions for Patty's birthday Are there people who LIKE landmines? In late 2000 she traveled to Cambodia and the area to see for herself the effects of landmines. If you have a charity that means something to you, whatever it is, please make a donation in Patty's name to that charity. Then follow the direction so that we can add your name to our card and special. Our purpose is not to offend anyone, just to say Happy Birthday to Patty in a meaningful way Thanks and Peace Murph - ----- Original Message ----- From: Kaycee973@aol.com Date: Friday, February 21, 2003 12:49 pm Subject: Re: MM: Land mine contributions for Patty's birthday > I would love to contribute to a charity in Patty's name. Being on the pacifist side of the spectrum, I certainly find it hard to justify any of this stuff. On the other hand, there are "rational" folks who believe national defense and the art of war has a place - including land mines. Therefore, they find it hard to support an organization that has as one of it's goals, a total ban on these indiscriminate weapons. These folks are in step with United States government which is not one of the 145 signatories of the Ottawa Treaty (http://vvaf.org/campaign/ottawasigners.html). But then again, the US seems to be out of step with a lot of the other nations these days. I would hope though, that they could get past this particular VVAF objective and look at the total good this organization does which includes trying to make whole may of the women and children maimed by landmines everyday.
