That bit of ultra-high praise adorned a promotional card handed out at Griffin's show at the Birchmere on Tuesday night, where the Austin-based singer-songwriter played a set that seemed to corroborate Carpenter's blurb. Griffin's two-hour show was a model of songcraft, brimming with her precisely detailed creations that she and her four-piece band rendered with appropriately subtle folk, country and blues colorations. Subtle, because Griffin's words and melodies are so strong that little else is needed to flesh them out, and the sold-out crowd hung on each vocal with reverence. The show was based on Griffin's sterling 2002 album "1000 Kisses" -- songs like "Long Ride Home," "Be Careful," "Rain" and "Chief" were by turns wistful and gripping -- but the redheaded Maine native explored new territory as well, putting a series of solo numbers (accompanying herself on piano) directly in the middle of her set. Though these weren't as stellar as her renditions of songs like the Dylanesque "Flaming Red," "Top of the World" (recently covered by the Dixie Chicks), the moving "Mary" and her cover of Bruce Springsteen's "Stolen Car," the sheer power of her singing prevailed. Guitarist Doug Lancio played with exemplary empathy throughout and proved an effective bandleader when, at the conclusion of an encore that featured a stirring "Let Him Fly," he swerved into "Tony" after Griffin broke a guitar string, writing a rousing conclusion to the set. - -- Patrick Foster Thanks, Scott Antall www.scottantall.com scott@scottantall.com 412-414-5121 ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Feb 2003 13:23:47 -0500 From: "Scott Antall" Subject: MM: Patty review from Nashville (1/31/2003) I don't think I have seen this posted here - a great review from Nashville - ---------------- http://tennessean.com/entertainment/music/archives/03/01/28293805.shtml? Element_ID=28293805 Patty Griffin triumphs in Ryman debut By CRAIG HAVIGHURST Staff Writer They wouldn't let her go. The loyal and fervent crowd might well have thrown white roses at Patty Griffin's feet when she arrived on stage for a final encore, and her genuine surprise at the triumph she'd made in her headlining Ryman Auditorium debut proved one of the evening's many pleasures. The others came from two hours of beautifully written songs, Griffin's transcendent voice and an on-top-of-it band, not to mention a literally smoking opening set from Buddy and Julie Miller. Nashville's great husband and wife team of edge-country singer/songwriters would scarcely look to strangers' eyes like a couple, but the Millers sound like the most copasetic marriage on earth. Their voices blended like blood kin on her All My Tears and Midnight and Lonesome. The recently recorded When It Comes To You, with its slinky Memphis trance, adds a new color to the Millers' bluer than blue country set list. It was Julie who first remarked on the ''burning smell'' following a loud pop during a ballad. For the second half of the set, the music, including a pretty Patty Griffin backing vocal on I Still Cry, competed with a growing cloud of smoke over the stage and the unnerving aroma of an electrical fire. It turns out a stage light had blown and set a curtain to smoldering, but an invisible crew took care of it without an interruption in the show. Griffin began her set with a chilled martini vibe, singing passionate alto with the sparest bass and drum accompaniment, but with Long Ride Home and Goodbye (two very different portraits of grieving), Griffin exhibited her gift for sonic catharsis, for beautiful release, from life's pain. Doug Lancio, Griffin's close collaborator, played warm and airy guitars. Brian Owings leaned heavily on his hand drums and shakers, communicating effortlessly with upright bassist Dave Jacques, while Michael Ramos buoyed the music with glorious accordion and deft keyboard playing. That offered a divine platform for Griffin's malleable voice. It's cutting but pretty, icicle cool and lofty. There are few better in this nether-genre between folk and rock and country and what-have-you. Let's call it smart civilized music for grownups and leave it at that. Griffin's songs offer spellbinding glimpses of lives battling loss, self-loathing or just plain ennui. Her Making Pies drew a rave response, and it's nothing more than a picture of the most ordinary person imaginable. Her cover of the old Tomorrow Night was divine intervention. She also sang in French and Spanish, turning Mil Besos into a rapturous Cuban-style reverie. Against the lushness of many ballads, the livelier material really popped, and when the Millers and Emmylou Harris joined for the rousing Truth #2, the place justifiably erupted. Tony, an eviscerating portrait of a high school suicide, had the same effect, proving that Griffin can sing it big or small, light or dark, English or foreign. What can't she do? Originally set for release last fall and then moved to this spring, it now appears that the collection won't be out until this fall or even later. MCA has given no reason for the delay, but it may have something to do with the fact that the project is a holdover from the previous administration and, thus, not an urgency for the present one. Whenever the project surfaces, it should sparkle, with Cline covers by Natalie Cole, Diana Krall, Martina McBride, Norah Jones, K.D. Lang, Amy Grant, Patty Griffin and others. Jordan M.D." Subject: MM: Patty's Birthday It sounds like the amount to donate is a minimum of $25. Just think, if everyone of the fans on this chatline alone donated that amount, it would be THOUSANDS!!! The cost of 2 CD's per person. By this Mad Mission connection alone I can guarantee that: 1. I have received more than that in trades. 2. I have enjoyed more therapeutic hours of listening to Patty, than I would ever care to equate to a massage at $50/hour, a movie at $25+ for my whole family, a good bottle of wine, or my monthly HBO bill. 3. I have found new friends that are as eccentric as I am.....validating that we are really not that weird....or at least not alone. 4. I have been educated regarding a cause that I previously was unaware of, and realize that it is a lot easier to donate $$ than to watch or feel the devastation of war. I am impressed that Patty went to Cambodia and allowed herself to feel it. It is that empathy that brings out her beauty in her songs. On this one, I choose to live vicariously..... So....if you saw Patty on her birthday, wouldn't you love to give her a present that means something to her? Go for it!! $25.00 per fan!!! PayPal is really easy. But Paypal will allow you to make a donation via your debit or credit card, so it is VERY convenient. When you make your donation, there is a field marked "Where did you hear about us?".
