I still think it's his best album, more developed than Swordfish Trombone, where he first started breaking away from the barroom-style songs he'd been doing. I also loveFrank's Wild Years, which has Hang on St. Christopher on it (although, oddly, my cd version refers to the song "Cold, Cold Ground" as "Cold Call Ground"). I also quite liked Bone Machine. Frankly, however, I've found his recent output disappointing, despite the critical raves. I felt Mule Variations and Blood Money, the last two I got of his, saw him merely recycling the formula into predictability, and I kept thinking "If anyone's got Rain Dogs, why would they want this?" Good luck -- it'll all be worth it! adam k. - ------------------------------------------------ This mail sent through http://webmail.zoom.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Feb 2003 14:17:59 -0500 From: "* Darcie *" Subject: MM: Re: Tom Waits I bought Rain Dogs at 16. A once friend told me to pick it up, that I would love it. I hated it!! A year later... I popped it in. It blew my mind! I own every record now. He's is the most brilliant songwriter. Poetic. I feel lik Heartattack and Vine is the soundtrack to my life. However, I must disagree with you, Mule Variations is one of his best. Take It With Me??? That song is up there. Patty does a great cover of that tune. I have always wanted to cover Hang Down Your Head from Rain Dogs.... maybe someday... ~darc http://www.darcieminerband.com p.s. haven't posted here for months... feels funny... like in my pants or something.... lol i can feel the love from gary now... p.p.s. anyone going to see steve earle on the 18th???!! woohoo! my second time!Get more from the Web. I stumbled across her music by going to see many other local artists. She would hang out at some small bars, hop on stage with other musicians an add her own special touch to their songs. Somehow, I got word that she was playing on her own so I made an effort to find out where she would be. There was one show at Johnny D's where I was sitting in the bar area, Patty came on stage, and I simply floated to the "dance" floor. I was mesmerized by the music. My memory is terrible, but I do remember her singing Shells, I Write the Book, and a few others that would be on Living with Ghosts. The last time I saw her at a really small place was at The Kendall Cafe. At the end of the show she was handing out cassette singles of Moses. She seems pretty much the same now as she was then. A bit shy or nervous to be up singing with other bands (after they coaxed her). Very quiet when approached. I went to see my old pal Laurie Geltman (Patty sang on her 1st cd) who said, when introducing her song Elbow- Patty Griffin did great vocals on this song. I think she's famous now. Maureen Maureen: I'd be interested in hearing a story or two of seeing Patty in her very early days at small clubs with just a few people in attendance. When I first saw Patty years ago, it was when she was on her first national tour for Living with Ghosts. I was astonished by her songwriting and ability and have been a fan ever since. I always wondered how she performed in extremely small settings and how awkward/friendly she was. One of the things that I tell people when asked about Patty is that she is the one you would pick to come over with her guitar to play at your BBQ or party, as she ranges everywhere with her music and has a passion for it. Plus that voice and those lyrics.
