[Matt Fotter Subject: MM: Rams Head MMers , Headed out early with Dave & Karla in case of traffic problems. No problems , got there early & hung out for awhile. Monday was taco day at the RH so we got lucky. Our table mate was Randy from Seattle who flew in just for the show. It's good to know that we're not the only ones who go over the top for a Patty show. I stayed extra quiet , intimidated by the possible presence of Aimee : ) Set list : Lost and Looking ( Patty , Brian & Dave ) The Long Ride Goodbye Making Pies Be Careful Top of the World French Lullaby / solo / piano My Dear Old Friend / solo / piano Christina / solo Rain Chief Stolen Car Truth # 2 Mad Mission Mil Besos Mary Encore Moses / solo Tomorrow Night ( Patty , Doug & Dave ) Tony Nobody's Crying "Lost and Looking" continues to grow on me by leaps & bounds , as do the piano solos to a lesser degree. Pretty consistent show throughout , with "Lost and Looking" , the solos , "Goodbye" , & The Grand Finale of "Tony" & "Nobody's Crying" being my high points. Doug lost his guitar cord at one point during his TOTW solo , but came back with some blazing licks when he retrieved it. Couldn't find Patty's picture on the wall , but found 2 of Dar Williams , & imposed upon Randy to mention that on his comment card , with a note to correct the situation. I imagine that these venues will scramble to find Patty's picture as she continues to grow in stature. If she wins the Grammy , they'll probably be digging thru their pics the next day. Seasons of Man Performed by Yes Don ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 03:25:32 -0500 From: "don henn" Subject: MM: Birchmere MMers , Had to borrow a sweater from Dave , worrying about freezing as I waited at the Birchmere for a good seat , wanting to be up front there for the first time. Luckily , it was in the thirties , & I only had to wait 1 1/2 hours. Still took awhile to get rid of the chill after I got in , though. Set List : Lost and Looking The Long Ride Goodbye Making Pies Be Careful Top of the World French Lullaby / solo / piano Peter Pan / solo / piano Christina / solo Rain Chief Stolen Car Truth # 2 Mad Mission Mil Besos Mary Encore Let Him Fly ( Patty & Doug ) Tomorrow Night ( Patty , Doug & Dave ) Nobody's Crying ( Interrupted - broken string ) Tony I hope I live forever so I can spend a couple thousand years bragging about being 5 feet away from Patty as she poured out "Lost and Looking" at the Birchmere. Definitely a high point in my 3 + years of seeing her live. It's a much better show from that vantage point , & I don't think I've been that close since Knoxville last year. Was delighted to hear her go into "Peter Pan" during her solo , but I guess she was a bit rusty & seemed to have a difficult time with her playing. As she concentrated on it , her vocals seemed to be affected a little. Still thought it was a high point , though. About midway into the set she said that she supposed people were taping this State of the Union Address , & proceeded to do a little GW bashing , even inviting the band to express their views. Michael said something in Spanish , & Patty said " ooh , that was bad " in mock astonishment. In between the words "this" & "State" , I jumped to the conclusion that she was going to say "taping this show" , b/c politics was the furthest thing from my mind at the time. Glad I wasn't taping it or I would really have gotten paranoid. I had the urge to interject that I would rather be taping her performance , but didn't want to be anymore in her face than I already was. Maybe it was my catbird seat , but the show seemed to get better as the night wore on. When she went into "Nobody's Crying" , I was being carried along for awhile until the string broke. In a move that showed her increasing resiliency & confidence , she cried " oh no ! " , then turned to doug & yelled "what am I going to do now bandleader ? " Then said "play something else " , & they went into "Tony". Didn't have time to be disappointed about NC b/c she soared again on "Tony" , & the music soared with her , w/o detracting from the vocals. Great seat ! Great show ! Getting over all the time I had to worry Leaving all the changes far from far behind We relieve the tension Only to find out the masters name Anderson / Howe "Close to the Edge" Part I. The Solid Time of Change Performed by Yes Don ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 09:08:54 -0500 From: "Ed Felker" Subject: MM: RE: Birchmere Speaking of this -- and I, too, had the privilege of being able to touch the stage for this show -- this song blew me away. Can anyone tell me more about Lost and Looking? I don't suppose she has recorded it somewhere? It was simply amazing. Regarding the political conversation, frankly that went on a bit long for me, and stands out clearly as the only disappointment in this, my first Patty show. I dislike but expect that sort of Washington-bashing from Steve Earle, his shows now always seem to evolve into a political rally. But I really just wanted to hear her music, free of politics. By the way, how did we get from "It's not unpatriotic to question the government," to "you're evil if you support the government."? Anyway, let me know more about Lost and Looking if you can. Thanks. Set List : > > Lost and Looking ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Feb 2003 13:59:25 -0500 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Ryman MMers , I thought of skipping Nashville b/c of the distance & weather. Even thought of skipping the Birchmere too. If I had tix instead of Will Call , I'm not sure what I would have done, but not going would have been a foolhardy move. Reunion day for Patty , as Emmylou , Buddy & Julie Miller , Jay Joyce & ex- keyboard player John Dederick ( sp? ) joined her onstage. I would say that Patty was burning up the place , but that must have been Buddy & Julie , as they were on stage when one of the drapes started smoldering. There were a few loud pops from the speakers , & a little while after that , Julie said that whatever made those noises smelled like it was burning. I noticed puffs of smoke drifting past the top lights , then smelled it myself. When they finally noticed the drape , they were twisting it to try to smother it as much as possible b/c it was about 2/3 of the way up from the floor. When Buddy & Julie were done , the curtains were drawn , & everything was OK when Patty came out. Set list : Lost and Looking The Long Ride Goodbye Making Pies Be Careful ( w / Julie ) Top of the World Christina / solo The Moon Song / solo Je la Verrai un Jour ( I'll See Her one Day) ( Patty & Jay ) / piano Peter Pan ( Patty & Jay ) / piano Rain Chief Stolen Car Mad Mission Mil Besos Truth #2 Mary Encore Let Him Fly ( Patty & Doug ) Tomorrow Night Tony Nobody's Crying 2nd Encore 10 Million Miles / solo 22 songs ! Almost 1/4 of the Patty songs I wanted to hear ! Thanks to Hugues for the French translation. Everything was great until Peter Pan. Jay Joyce came out to accompany Patty on his guitar when she sat down at the piano , & his playing was supportive on the French Lullaby. I was eager to hear PP again when the opening notes started , hoping that this version would be notches higher than the first one on the tour , but the loudness & intensity of the guitar walked all over this quiet , sensitive song. I must really be arrogant to assume that these long-time professionals completely lose their musical sensibilities on occasion. Listened to Nina Simone's "I Love You , Porgy" on the way home , & wondered how a wailing guitar would sound there. Only snag of the night for me , though , as things just got better from there. Noticed Michael doing double duty on the piano & his other keyboard , as either the organ or synthesizer replaced Brian's cello line in "Rain". He looked like he was watching a tennis match as his head turned back & forth. Didn't miss the cello too much as it never was used to maximum effect. This band really came together quickly , & the music got better & better as this short tour wore on. I'd like to see them continue with Brian's cello added , & used to maximum effect. After they did "Chief" , Patty said now that she has a video on CMT , maybe they'll invite her to do The National Anthem at a NASCAR event , adding that she recently attended one , & liked it a lot. The night busted open when Emmylou & Buddy & Julie joined patty for "Truth #2. They rocked the house , & got a standing ovation , the first of 4 , although the last one was a little weak b/c they turned the lights & music up quickly. Patty was delighted , & everyone stayed for "Mary". Emmylou & Julie's harmonies with Patty near the end lifted "Mary" high. Pumped by her friends & the crowd , I had an immaculate perception of the 4 encore songs , all at or near best-ever versions. The music on "Tony" was as good as I've ever heard from a Patty band , & they took absolutely nothing away from the vocals. Best ever "Tony". After 4 encore songs , the crowd would not be denied more. One thing I like about the Ryman , is how much noise you can make stomping on the wooden floors. If Patty didn't come out , the crowd may have done what the fire failed to do , destroy the Ryman. Rock The House !! has a literal meaning at the Ryman. Patty was delighted & said she was about to relax with a glass of wine , but we wouldn't let her. It was great to see Patty enjoy her renewed success with her friends & her many Nashville fans. While Angelo wasn't there , Patty mentioned him , saying that he would teach her a new tuning , & she would write a new song with it. For you guitar players out there , she said that "The Moon Song" is a double d - drop. Buddy & Julie were the class openers of the tour , but my memory of their duet in Austin was a tad better than their full band set. Patty joined them for a little harmony on "I Still Cry" , but as usual , she was very subdued. Julie kept looking at her as though she were overwhelmed by her presence , & embraced her after the song. Didn't mention other openers much , as they didn't reach the standard that Patty's homies & friends set. Michael Fracasso , Eliza Gilkyson , & the Millers. Oh well , back to real life. Patty trips are my "raison d'e-tre" these days , as too many other aspects of life pretty much suck. All in all , the journey takes you all the way As apart from any reality That you've ever seen and known Anderson / Squire "Close to the Edge" Part II. MMers , When I left Dave in Carlisle , & headed south , I was anxious to hear a lot of my road music that I hadn't heard for awhile. Popped in PPM & Yes , & was on my way. I have a friend that has a rock garden , & I pick up rocks for her on my trips. She's very religious , & the centerpiece of her garden is a statue of the Virgin Mary. Having gotten most big cities , I now focus on unusual names or places. Picked one up at the Mason-Dixon line in MD , then saw a sign for a replica of The Grotto at Lourdes. Thought she'd like that , & stopped , expecting to find a small spring , & maybe a plaque. I was impressed with the size & scope of it. A conglomeration of a number of shrines , including Saint Elizabeth Ann Seton , the first native born American Saint , with a number of buildings , many statues , huge & small , & many mosaic depictions of religious scenes. It was very cold , so I found a rock in an out-of-the-way place , dutifully immersed it in the Grotto waters , & went back to my car. Before I got the car in gear I heard the line " I crucified my hate and held the word within my hand". Shiver me timbers ! I got a quick shiver , then just as rapidly , a deep , almost overwhelming sadness that took me a while to fend off. The line is from "Close to the Edge" by Yes , that I've been quoting in my reviews. It's full of religious symbolism & allusions , including an organ solo that sounds like it was written for a cathedral. Maybe it's time I got saved : ) I crucified my hate And held the word Within my hand Anderson / Squire "Close to the Edge" Part II. His insidious force has reached out & drawn Patty into his sphere of influence. I watched in horror as a film showed our Patty brutally running down a cyclist in her car , & stealing from him as he lay injured. "Signed First Edition" , a 9 minute film by Roy Taylor , starring Patty Griffin & scored by Screen Door Music , that I picked up at the Birchmere. $15 for a 9 minute film is a little steep , but true artistes must be funded. I hope this doesn't cast Patty & Roy as mercenaries. Searched my E-mail for this quote , & found it under the heading of "Mean Patty" , also said in jest. Coincidence or Master Plan ? Hmmm..
