'Cremaster 2'. She plays the thoughts of a female lead. In one scene, the females thoughts are Patty Griffin's voice singing. Then, a photo flashes on the screen, a black and white photo of Patty upside down. It is supposed to appear like a skull, with the dark of her hair and the white of her skin. It's hard to see, but you can see it. There is a picture in the book, 'The Cremaster Cycle' by Matthew Barney. It is way expensive (60.00). So, check your library or book store if interested. A glorious concert; it seemed even Patty didn't want the evening to end, treating a rapt audience to a three-song encore with the band, and then a second encore with only her guitar. Here's a local review that's on the mark: http://www.tennessean.com/entertainment/music/archives/03/02/28293805.shtml?Element_ID=28293805 At most concerts in Nashville, there's always the low hum of chatter from the audience. I'm not sure if it's because there's so much music here or just a sign of the times. But this was one of those rare events where the audience was with her from start to finish -- no chatter, no shouts -- a mutual sharing of the amazing energy that happens between audience and artist. So tangible I didn't even think to write down the setlist. - --Nan ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Feb 2003 14:05:25 EST From: Gashlycrumb@aol.com Subject: MM: Patty and Matthew Barney http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0810969351/ref=lib_rd_next_7/103- 5495693-4985463?v=glance&s=books&vi=reader&img=7&jumbo=1#reader-link this is a link to the page that shows the table of contents of the book (Cremaster Cycle). Set List: Lost and Looking The Long Ride Goodbye Making Pies Be Careful Top of the World Christina / solo The Moon Song / solo French Lullaby / solo / piano My Dear Old Friend / solo / piano Rain Chief Stolen Car Truth # 2 Mad Mission Mil Besos Mary Encore Tomorrow Night Tony Nobody's Crying Many "divas" seem to think that their songs are there to showcase their voices rather than vice- versa , so I have a prejudice towards too much scale sliding. Put a 'but" after praising "Lost and Looking" in my Pgh. review. No "but" here , Patty won me over after the 2nd listening. When I got rid of my prejudice , it all seemed to fit the song. I've since noticed how many notes Patty uses singing the word " world " in " Making Pies" & never had a problem with it b/c it was an isolated incident. Was amazed at how quickly this new band came together for excellent arrangements. "Goodbye" , "Truth # 2 " & "Tony" were examples. When she introed the band , she gave Doug a long & glowing intro , but forgot to mention his name. When finished , someone from the audience said " but what's his name ? " . Patty was aghast , & blushing as she laughed about it. At one point , she was taking a drink of water , & I saw a torrent falling down onto her guitar. I found it hard to believe that she didn't notice it , & wondered if a practical joker put a hole in her bottle. When she did notice it on her guitar , she expressed concern about being electrocuted , then reminded herself that it was an acoustic guitar. Never mind ! I sort of dissed TN & Mary in my last review , & paid particular attention to them here. While the vocals for "Mary" were as good as ever , I guess it's a particular arrangement ( w/ the Flaming Red band ) that I miss. "Tomorrow Night" , though , doesn't express the high level of sensuality that Patty's brought to it in the past. My highlights were the solos & the grand finale of "Tony" & "Nobody's Crying". 20 songs , & 4 solos , 2 on piano. Can't ask for more than that. My notes indicated that "Moon" was done on piano , but I know I would have remembered that , & the French lullaby was missing. Looks like my mental deterioration is proceeding apace. Do I look on blindly And say I see the way Anderson / Howe "Close to the Edge" Part III.
