You could feel his enthusiasm ooooze from it. Made me long for another Patty concert in S.F. Was thinking about everyone's comments on Doug's playing behind Patty on "Stolen Car." I have felt for a long time that he is the perfect complement to Patty and that he really, truly "gets" her musically. I look forward to hearing his backup to Patty almost as much as I enjoy hearing and seeing Patty. And that is quite a compliment. But it got me thinking. Are there other "duos" people can think of as powerful as this? Most of you are too young, and they paled musically when compared to Patty and Doug, but the combination of Bonnie Raitt and a bass player/tuba player called Freebo comes to mind. Other thoughts? Are there other "duos" people > can think of as powerful as this? > Two duos immediately come to mind. One is Gillian Welch and David Rawlings. Rawlings guitar playing elevates Gillian's songs from "really freakin' good" to "world class". I often find so focused on his guitar playing that I forget to even listen to the words! The second duo is Buddy and Julie Miller. They are each great on their own but when they work together it's something else entirely. Check out the first (and only, to date) record they released under both of their names. It won the Americana Music Association's album of the year award last year which is a pretty good endorsement. - -- Jamie Alessio Jamie@jalessio.com www.RoachMusic.com www.NoeVenable.com www.DavidHopkinsMusic.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 08:09:51 -0500 From: "Stephen Leavitt" Subject: MM: HE LP! Hey guys, Back from the Ram's Head on Monday night. Spent the evening with Karla & Don, as usual.. and also met up with Randy, an MMer from Seattle who flew in at 6pm JUST for the Patty show, then flew out of BWI at 1am immediately following the show! What a trooper! Don was gracious as always, & agreed to take Randy back to the airport afterwards so that Randy wouldn't have to leave halfway through Patty's set just to catch a cab back.. It's funny that I used to think I was nice to fellow Patty fans.. On to the show. I don't have a set list.. but it was very similar to the Scottish Rite set. The only difference that I noticed is that on Monday we got 4 encore songs instead of the 2 or 3 on Saturday. Moses was one of the encore songs, and that was done solo, so that "made up" for one less solo song that she did during the pre-encore set. I believe the total number of songs may have evened out to be the same, and the actual length of set had to be very close as well.. clocking in at around 95-100 minutes.. once again one of the longest Patty shows I've ever attended. Doing the type of personal/emotional music she does, it's a wonder that she can stay so focused & honed in during a long set like that. Patty as always stunned the crowd with her amazing voice, which was still in fine form from Saturday. The band sounded incredibly tight, for only having a few shows under their belts. It always amazes me how great musicians can just click like that together on stage, when having little time to work together & get to know each other that well. I think I may prefer to the current sound/arrangements to those of the summer band.. but it could just be that it's a fresh sound to me. It does seem that they are allotted a bit more flexibility sound-wise with the upright bass taking the place of the cello as well as the current drummer being added. Briain was EXCELLENT back there on the cello during the summer tour, so saying that is taking nothing away from him. It's just that the couldn't do the pretty rocking current version of Tony this summer. Highlights of the show?? Hmm, how about everything?? The more I get to hear Patty live, the more I realize that EVERYTHING she does is so damn good... that's why we all love her so much. Moses was a surprise, so that definitely stood out for me. Doug's guitar cable came out during his ending solo part in Top Of The World, which at first seemed like it may be a disaster. He recovered pretty quickly though, and ended the instrumental ending of the song with a really blazing solo that sounded perfect there. Apparently Doug is more "clutch" when playing guitar and having to think quickly than I am when approaching a beautiful woman.. LOL (i.e. Bree Sharp at the show on Saturday). Which brings another moment. As Don, Karla & I were hanging out at the Ram's Head Bar, and I was enjoying quality brew after quality brew.. I mentioned how cool it would be if Bree walked into the bar & attended this show as well. Not more than 5 minutes later, a track from her new CD came over the bar's PA system! Man.. talk about deja vu all over again.. I can't help but think now.. (in my best Field of Dreams voice) *If I think of Bree, she will come* LOL Last thing about the show. Something I excluded earlier. Patty had a very nice intro to Mary the past few nights. She said about how the U.S. is going through some rough times right now. People are worried about the possibility of their kids going off to war, about the economy, etc.. She said that it's a tough time right now, and it could get worse. Then said that her grandmother Mary lived through what seemed like a lifetime of bad times, but still managed to stay bright & positive, all the while passing on that great character to her children and grandchildren. It was really a touching moment (I thought), and another testament to the great mind that is inside of Patty. Which brings up one last point.. (sorry for this LONG post).. I pointed out about Patty's show on Saturday & said on a personal level how she's so intelligent, talented, and gets more pretty, elegant, & graceful with age. To have had the opportunity to watch her grow as a performing musician alone over the past 6 or so years has been quite a pleasure in itself. I then said, How is she still single?? I may be talking from too much of a personal opinion, or anti-relationship stance, but maybe all those good qualities she has are precisely the reasons why she is not married. Who needs men if you're as cool as Patty Griffin?? :-) Enough out of me! Dave "I suspect Patty Griffin's songs make most people a little uncomfortable. Like they've just walked in on a private moment in someone else's life and they know they should turn around and tip-toe away, but they can't. They make me jealous." ~~ The GREAT Steve Earle on Patty Griffin ~~ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Jan 2003 20:54:57 EST From: FlamingRed74@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Ram's Head show.. (P.S.) One other thing that was humorous about last night that I had forgotten about. When Patty played the Landmine Free World show at the Keswick last year, she mentioned how it was cool to be playing with her long-lost sister Nanci Griffith. Then mentioned how she doesn't know how (because their names aren't even the same), but people always get them confused, and actually think that for some reason they're related.. (what??) Well, last night as we were sitting there waiting for Patty to come on stage, I overheard someone saying that when they committed to coming tonight they were told that it was Nanci Griffith playing. Their friend told them it was Nanci, & when they later realized it was instead Patty Griffin, they thought.. "what the heck, we'll just come anyway". Good idea I'd say.. ;-) That was one conversation I would have loved for Patty to overhear.. LOL How DO people get them confused anyway?? I don't really see all that much of a resemblance in the music.. Patty has red hair, Nanci doesn't.. Griffith & Griffin maybe appear to be a bit similar at a glance, but don't sound at all alike (unless you have a serious speech impediment) ??? Anyone care to offer up an explanation here? I don't have an extra ticket, but you might want to go to the Birchmere very early, as soon as they open, and see if any tix have been made available. I did that last year for Buddy and Julie Miller after they were sold out. They often release some extra tix the night of the show, if you're early.
