I also got to meet Murph. An incredibly handsome 27-year-old man with his mistress and two illegitimate children in the front row. Who would have thunk it? You know, sometimes you're just at the right place at the right time. Anyone that was in Collingswood Saturday night knows of what I speak. Let's face it. Patty digs NJ. A few years back I saw Patty play at an abandoned movie theater in Collingswood. If I recall Patty said it was the first time she had played in the Bosses home State (NJ) and she was honored to be here. She then played Nebraska? Anyway, Nancy Falko opened for her that evening and it was a night to remember. Ninety degrees and no air conditioning. It was a dirty, filthy, knock em' dead, extremely loud, rock and roll show. Patty had two really obvious holes in her blouse. The band looked like they had not showered in a couple of days. Truly, one of the best Patty shows I have had the privilege of attending. Three years later...... Back to Collingswood. Take the above review and throw it out the window. The Scottish Rite, in Collingswood, NJ, is an incredible Venue. I won't try to describe this 1930's Art Deco beauty. If you get a chance to go to a show there, by all means do so. The band was completely polished and impeccable. My step Brother, Dave Jacques, blew a note on one song, but the family will forgive him. Patty's wardrobe is no longer a topic of discussion, as it was a few years back. She looked great. Patty's voice is just as good as it gets. The show was an eclectic mix of all her best stuff. In other words any of her stuff. Best of all, she finished with Nobody's Cryin', which I have been dying to hear live. Now as you all know, I judge a Patty show by how much I want to kill myself after the performance. Thank God I don't own a gun. When she was done with that song, I would have left gray matter all over the walls of the place. Best song of the night? Hummm..Stolen Car, if I have to pick one. The echoing note Doug hits during the line "I'm driving a stolen car, on a pitch black night" puts me behind the wheel of that song every time. No, I'm sorry Chief was the best. No ......well, you get the point. Nervous moment of the night?! Anyone that was at West 54TH taping in NYC, where Patty had six false starts on piano playing Peter Pan, can appreciate the angst I feel every time she walks toward a piano. But it went extremely well. All in all, the most relaxed I have ever seen Patty. I think she dug the place and I know that those in attendance had to love the show. Patty played it on piano this week at the Pittsburgh show. I saw on this list that MCC had recorded it for the "We Were Soldiers" soundtrack so I requested it on YEP last week. The DJ told me he would play it in a fearure they call the "folk-al point." It is scheduled to be played at 10:40 am Eastern time on Mon Jan 27 at 91.3 in Pgh or www.wyep.org _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. I have a few :). Hi MM'ers, The Ann Arbor Folk Festival was great! I thought every performer brought something interesting onstage. 'Course, nobody could compare to Patty. Sorry for late input. Here's Patty's setlist (conveniently lifted from Sarah): Lost and Looking Long Ride Home Makin' Pies Chief Stolen Car Top of the World Truth #2 Mil Besos Mad Mission Nobody's Crying The audience started cheering when Patty's winking moon descended from somewhere above the stage curtains. The theater was packed and the audience was at its most attentive during Patty's time on stage. That's the first time I've heard Patty sing Lost and Looking. I thought it was bluesy & beautiful. And it was really wonderful to hear a new song. This was my third time seeing Patty. Something was different this time. It wasn't Patty's singing or her guitar playing or the change of some of her band members. Nope, it was location. I was way back! & I'm not talking about one of the other bands that played that night. The last two times, I had the pleasure of seeing Patty at the Ark. You can't really get a bad seat at the Ark. It's a small venue and you can see every little expression and emotion on the performer's face. So I'm terribly spoiled. But Patty's voice was as exquisite as ever. Even from far away, I could see she was enjoying the music. She had three guitars behind her. Someone mentioned they were all Gibsons. She sort of did a little happy step one of the times she changed guitars. It seemed she was either happy to be there or happy to pick up that guitar. Either way, it was a good thing. Quite a few people shouted out requests. Patty mentioned at one of the shows I was at, that she has a contrary nature & won't play it, if someone shouts it out. So I hoped no one would shout out "Tony"! No one did, but I guess maybe that might not have played well at a folk festival. Just one more reason to keep seeing Patty concerts! The band sounded great. I like it when songs vary a bit from what you get on the CD. Especially when I listen to them a lot. A few of the songs had little changes to them, but not enough to wreck the beauty of the original version. At the beginning of Truth #2, I noticed a couple of women leaning over to say something to their significant others. I wondered if they were saying, "Listen for that pearls of water on my hips line and tell me what you think it means." From far away, Patty looked nice. She was wearing a long bluish purple dress with a black sweater. I tried not to, but I kept thinking of Emily Latella. I mean that in a no glasses, fiery redhead, incredibly sultry singer kind of way. Heck, it was cold outside and nobody was looking very Mariah Carey-ish that night. And did I mention, I was really far from the stage? The last time I saw Patty, up close, she looked retro and elegant. With every new performance I see Patty becoming more comfortable up there. Yet, she stays the same sweet person I saw at the first performance. All in all, it was a wonderful night of music. Patty's voice & songs get me every time. And, I finally picked up a 1,000 Kisses T-shirt for a mere $15.00. Can't wait to hear her next, new CD. Because I'm confused... Wanting to kill yourself means you enjoyed a performance? I guess you'd live through the cruise ship/amateur night that we were discussing two weeks ago. Just an hour before your post I wrote the same think in my "blog" (on my web page), that "Stolen Car" was the best number here in Ann Arbor. And that's not to diss her other songs. It's just that her only cover song had that something little extra. Maybe it was Doug making that guitar of his cry & mourn. Great chemistry between his playing and Patty's. I've seen them quite a few times in San Franciso and when they played in Richmond, VA I sent a friend of mine out to the show. His email to me after the show read: "I've never seen 5 guys leave it all on the stage quite like that. If you told me that they were all bleeding when they left the stage, I'd believe you. It was insane. No breaks, no resting between songs, bastards played until last call. They're pretty bad ass." On the downside, it now costs $15 to go see them play here instead of $5! - -- Jamie Alessio Jamie@jalessio.com Visit these sites..... .... www.RoachMusic.com ....... www.NoeVenable.com .... www.DavidHopkinsMusic.com ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V7 #27 ********************************
