(1) it is the name of an old motel (2) the motel has sea foam colored wallpaper (3) there is an invitation from the protagonist to a traveler to meet _tonight_ at the Silver Bell (4) it appears that the offer was accepted, because the protagonist paints a picture of her room and uses the words "this is home" (5) her room is a prison cell, and she feels trapped as if she is in a spider's web (6) she wants to get out of the prison cell and maybe she can get out tonight with traveler's help "I did a stupid thing... don't know just what to do... so I'm telling you to meet me tonight at the Silver Bell". If it sounds abstract, it probably should. Here are some personal thoughts about the song. (1) The nouns (excluding pronouns and gerunds) used in this song: bed, Silver Bell, motel, hole to hell, tonight, home, wallpaper, sea foam, shades, prison cell, wicked web, hundred bees. This character is afflicted by a lot of pain. (2) The color of the wallpaper indicate that the motel is old, probably built in the 60's and doesn't have money for new wallpaper (3) We do not know what the "stupid thing" was. Could it refer to her lifestyle choice? (see #5 below) (4) The chorus of "Silver Bell" echoes a song written by Neil Young, and performed by Emmylou Harris... "Meet me at the Wrecking Ball, Wrecking Ball...", a bar or club where the characters may or may not meet. I don't see any other similarities here, but I'd bet Patty has listened to _Wrecking Ball_ at least once or twice (5) The tone of the song is rock -- hmm, what other Patty Griffin album takes it title track from a rock song? Both songs are about women who are unable to escape their circumstances. In "Flaming Red" she ends up dead, in "Silver Bell" she is trapped in a prison cell. Are they both prostitutes? Finally, like any song or work of art, there is plenty of room for interpretation here. She was relaxed and composed, talkative and humbled by our appreciation of her on the coldest night on record in the Burgh. She sang flawlessly and danced a little now and then, she chit-chatted about the origins of some of her songs. She played the piano and translated from French her Mother's childhood lullaby....she had a couple of new but fabulous backup people she just rehearsed with earlier today....we gave her two standing ovations and still it was over way too soon. It was my first time seeing her and I was so impressed. Such an emotional experience! Bonnie - ----Original Message Follows---- Tonight's concert was played before a packed theater!
