The first time I searched (shortly after the post) the album showed up in the search, but at the time I was unable to download it because of my firewall configuration. I got the firewall issue straightened out a few days later but since then "Silver Bell" never shows up in the "Zwan" search. I've been trying the search periodically for the last few weeks with no luck. Wondering if anyone else has been able to download the album this way or if anyone is willing to put the SHN encoded album up somewhere I can grab it (http/ftp/scp are all fine). I can also provide an FTP dropbox to upload to if that is easier. I'm with others on the list that transferring files digitally is much easier and cheaper than mailing CDs all over the country. Additionally, thanks for the tip on Furthurnet! I've been listening to live shows of a bunch of my favorite bands lately thanks to this list. Oh yeah - since this is my first post... I'm in San Francisco (ok, actually Oakland right now) and first heard Patty's music about a year ago when a friend handed me Living with Ghosts and said "YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO THIS!". Saw her live for the first time at the Fillmore a few months back. I'm involved in the local folk-ish music scene in San Francisco so if anyone on the list lives around here send me an email - I'd love to exchange lists of local favorites. - -- Jamie Alessio Jamie@jalessio.com Visit these sites..... .... www.RoachMusic.com ....... www.NoeVenable.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 Nov 2002 12:06:51 +0000 From: David Tomlinson Subject: MM: Patty in Buxton, UK I thought our US friends might like a brief report on Patty's gig (as support for Billy Bragg) in Buxton, Derbyshire, United Kingdom on Sunday, 24th November. It's the first time I have seen her perform and the set was far too brief for me. She looked good and sounded in excellent voice. She was diffident and seemed unsure of herself; she was very surprised that someone shouted out requests from "Ghosts" and "Flaming Red" and expressed uncertainty at the quietness of the audience. It is hard to differentiate normal English quiet respect from total disinterest. By the end of her first number, I am sure that the former was dominant, though of course, most of the audience were there for Bragg and Patty said very nice things about him. The set - only 6 songs (!!!) .... Poor Man's House Long Ride Home Flaming Red Makin' Pies Stolen Car Sweet Lorraine (requested) What else can I say? It was foreplay without consummation - please send her back here soon. Bragg? He was OK; good in parts, but he didn't return the compliments by mentioning Patty, which was discourteous of him. Virgin however stock it for #2.99 so I'd recommend getting it from there. It has Rain (radio edit) which isn't hugely different from the album version, and doesn't lose anything imo. No horrible remixes thankfully. Long Ride Home - live version. I haven't heard any of the US tour but I'm assuming it was from one of her gigs there, with the band (can hear the accordian quite clearly), there's some nice guitar playing (re-arrangement/improvisation or whatever you want to call it) and I think two men doing backing vocals, one quite high, which was quite amusing! And finally a new song (as far as I know anyway) called the long stairs, which I like. Mainly the instrumentation is piano (somewhat reminiscent of Mother of God) and guitar, with Patty singing higher than I can recall hearing her do before. I'll try and transcribe it if I get the time. There was no additional information on it. The song to me seems to either be about a break up ("we've had a long run") or somebody dying and going to heaven - "He walked the long stairs, he said a long prayer, he breathed in the cool air". I had an image in my mind of a corridor with some stairs going out of sight, not quite a hospital corridor but not far off. If anyone would like me to pick them up a copy, let me know. Billy certainly seemed very impressed with her, as he should be! And she said he was good, which is true, though she was of course better. Not really Patty related, but anyway, he mentioned that in Birmingham Allison Moorer was in the same hotel and they stayed up till 4am singing. I'm sure the joke he made would have been funny if I knew the songs he was referring to ;) I'm still finding it hard to believe that I met the woman who is on the poster on my wall, lol Sarah >>Great review !
