An regular MP3 that's 3-4 minutes long can take a half hour to download. (Crappy phone lines out in my area and no indication from AT&T that digital cable will be out here anytime soon). Now, if I had a digital connection, I'd be all for it. john in sumner wa ________________________________________________________________ Sign Up for Juno Platinum Internet Access Today Only $9.95 per month! I love Patty's stuff and would buy it all if it were all available, but in the last month I've been able to find amazing hard-to-find recordings on KAZAA. I also have about 20 rare tracks of hers that I share while online, as well as some other artists. I try to clean up and remix the rough ones that I post. Once you install the software, you're ready to download and share. It would be nice if we all met on the same sharing network, maybe even on a certain night or weekend and we could all swap like crazy! If everyone does end up going the route of the Patty tree, it's good to know that you can send cd's in the mail at the MEDIA rate if it doesn't include a letter, and it will get mailed much cheaper. Just my 2 cents, see you on Kazaa? Look for roxx. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 10 Nov 2002 16:15:08 -0800 From: Jerry Skomer Subject: MM: "Rain" on KFOG's Archives Nine CD A few months ago when Patty passed through San Francisco, she performed a few songs at a radio station called KFOG. I believe Dana wrote a brief review of it at the time. Well, it turns out that one of the songs will be on the annual KFOG charity CD (the proceeds from the CD purchases benefits the local food banks). The CD entitled KFOG's Live at the Archives Nine will have "Rain" on it. That version is now being played on the air by KFOG as a promo. I caught it this morning on a show called "Acoustic Sunrise." The DJ said that after she had sung it in the studio "there wasn't a dry eye in the place." This particular version, actually, is not the best I have heard. The band sounds quite muddy and Patty's vocals were a little off. But I am happy for her. It's another sign that she is becoming better known and is considered by KFOG at least (an influential station in the Bay Area) to be cool. I know that this is not pracitical for everyone but for the people that don't like doing mail trades anymore online trading is a great thing. I just really worry about people trading mp3 sourced recordings. The music quality is severly degraded by using a lossy format so I definitely suggest using a lossless format like "SHN". SHN is a compressed wav file that does not cause a loss of sound quality. I have uploaded the Silver Bell SHN's onto the Furthur network. Since "Patty Griffin" isn't an artist that it will let you search by the album is under the artist "Zwan" and the venue is "Silver Bell". To use Furthur go to: http://www.furthurnet.com/ And download the tool. Once it's up and running go to the "Search page" Format: SHN Band Name: Zwan Venue: Silver Bell Leave the rest blank. Press "search". When the album shows up, double click on it and it will begin to download. Once the show is downloaded leave it up and running for a while so that other people can also download it from you. Since it's a peer-to-peer program the availability of the album depends on the people on-line. To decompress the SHN's into wavs that you can burn to CD go to: http://www.etree.org/mkw.html And download the MKW tool to extract the files to Wav. Hopefully a few of you will be able to get the album this way! - Jen ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V6 #385 *********************************
