I think they have done a great job with Patty's songs. It's funny how you can hear Patty's voice behind the lyrics. The phrasing is SO Patty Griffin. I think Natalie's voice has a rawness and edge much like our girl's, and I really do like it. The first song, "Long Time Gone," is fantastic and really sets the mood of the album. The part about heading out to Nashville, singing down on Broadway, makes me teary. Not because it's sad, but because I just moved from Nashville and I miss it! I used to work downtown, and everyday I would pass by the beautiful Ryman Auditorium, cross Broadway, and walk towards the Country Music Hall of Fame (I had to park 3 blocks away from work). I remember the twangy music coming from all of those honky tonk bars right there at the corner of Broadway and 5th Ave. I never thought I'd miss it, but I do! Another thing I miss: Nashville's passion and support for Patty's music. I have a feeling I will never see her live here in Houston. PLEASE, Patty, come to H-town! Okay, gotta go, but everyone please send your prayers to the Gulf Coast. Tropical Storm Fay is headed this way and we don't need the rain. They're saying it may be another Allison. Let's hope we don't lose 40 souls this time... - -Cristina _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Sep 2002 06:27:16 -0700 (PDT) From: Diane Aylsworth Subject: MM: Patty on Rollingstone.com If there's anyone out there that doesn't have CMT (like myself) you can still check out Patty's new video for Cheif! But did anyone else see the schedule they posted yesterday??? It's awful! They don't alternate the main-stage line-ups at all even though there are these great 1 hour breaks. Some of the worse match ups are: Patty Griffin vs. Wilco Emmylou Harris vs. Ryan Adams Los Lobos vs. Gillian Welch Look at the full schedule: http://www.aclfestival.com/schedule.html Anyway, my boyfriend and I have already sent protest letters so if anyone else is attending the show and wants to send letters begging for them to stagger the main stage performances write to them at info@aclfestival.com - they;ve still got 4 weeks to change the schedule!! On a not so bitter note.... who else is going? I've never been to Austin before but heard it's cool - what are some places I shouldn't miss?? We shold be a walking party. We are going to check out the Gourds at Antones on Friday night. On Saturday night, we are thinking of skipping out on String Cheese Incident to see Queens of the Stone Age with And They Will Know Us By the Trail of the Dead at Stubbs. My brother and our Austin friends are responsible for taking us to the best watering holes, records stores, and fajitas during the weekend. You're right about the schedule. It sucks ass. Many conflicts: Blind Boys of Alabama vs. Lil Cap'n Travis Gillian vs. Los Lobos vs. Caroline Herring Patty vs. Wilco David Garza vs. Jayhawks Ryan Admas vs. Emmylou Luna vs. Robert Randolph at least I can see the Gourds, Caitlin Cary, Kelly Willis, Tift Merrit, G Love, and a few others without having to feel guilty about skipping out on others. My favorite mexican food place is El Mercado on South First...not so far from Zilker, either. Very fresh, tasty, well done Tex Mex, vegetarian too if you like. It probably will be very busy during the festival but Threadgill's World Headquarters at Riverside and Barton Springs is owned by Eddie Wilson, the fellow who once operated the legendary Armadillo World Headquarters...great atmosphere, lots of photos of musicians and performances from the old place. Pretty good American-type menu...great veggies. When I have time to kill in Austin I like Half Price Books on Guadalupe and Waterloo Records just north of the river on Lamar... If you've got the energy after the shows you can crawl up and down Sixth Street and find food, music, and pretty much any kind of human being that could manage to crawl out there with ya. I'm definitely gonna write those guys about the schedule, thanks for the heads up. Jon Jennifer Caputo wrote:Well, I just booked my flight to Austin for the ACL festival and I'm pumped! I agree with Jon, El Mercado is bad ass for Tex-Mex and they make a killer Margarita, too! ...another 'real Austin' tradition is Magnolia Cafe on Lake Austin Blvd. or South Congress. It's a great place to see some freaks, hippies, tree huggers, and the food is quite unique! (24 hrs.) ...you must go down to Auditorium Shores and pay a visit to Stevie Ray...and the bats under the Congress Ave. bridge is a sight to see!--there are millions of them that come out from under the bridge every night at dusk. It's said that they eat approx. 18 tons of mosquitoes every night. ...if you want to get a good run in and check out some great scenery, head down to the Town Lake Hike and Bike trail while you're visiting Stevie Ray. Waterloo Records at 6th & Lamar is the best for any and all types of music and they have free in-store shows every Friday. with free beer! Our Capitol Bldg. is also quite impressive... good luck, have fun and remain 'Austintatious'!! ....sheryl (: On a not so bitter note.... who else is going?
