Set List : Be Careful Chief Rain The Long Ride Making Pies Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Poor Man's House / solo The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home / solo Truth # 2 Tony Goobye Stolen Car Mad Mission Mil Besos Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night / Patty & Doug Sweet Lorraine Had to tell Eliza what I thought of her before the tour ended. Patty is 2 for 2 with her homies accompanying her on tour. She puts on a great live show , with talent to spare. Writing , singing , & playing , with a sparkling stage personality , & funny stories. When Patty introduced "Truth # 2" she explained the name , & said she guesses truth keeps changing. Another great show. Patty's still maintaining that exceptional performance level that I've known for 3 years , & heard in everything she's done prior to that. I'll be glad to take that break from traveling for awhile , though. In spite of the fact that the show was supposed to be GA , every balcony table with a view of the stage had reserved signs on them. At the Bowery , a few of the balcony tables were reserved , & at Starr Hill about 20 of the row seats near the front had reserved signs on them. There were also a few shows where VIP lines for members got in first. I was lucky to meet Scott in Buffalo , who took me in as his guest. I stood at the bar with a few guys I met in line for awhile , but the sound was terrible there b/c of an overhang. I could barely hear Eliza talking between songs. Set list : Be Careful Chief Rain The Long Ride Making Pies Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Poor Man's House / solo The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home / solo Tony Goodbye Truth # 2 Ruby's Arms Mad Mission Mil Besos Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night / Patty & Doug Sweet Lorraine Encore II Ten Million Miles Great show , fitting for the finale of the tour , with a lot of my favorites. Trouble is , it was a very talkative crowd , & I must have moved 4 or 5 times b/c of "loud-mouthed yaps" in the area. Should have gone to the front of the stage early on , where the music is the priority. Home at last. The free-wheeling experimentation early on , quickly led to excellent arrangements on most songs , but then a lot of songs just kept changing. "Evolve" doesn't just mean change. It means growth or development towards an ideal or goal. At one point they had what I thought was a perfect ending for "Tony" , with Brian repeating 2 notes a few times that I thought actually reflected the despair inherent in the song. After a few shows , the other instruments joined in for the end , making it sound generic to me. I think the cello most complements Patty's unique sound , but it got downplayed as time went on , especially on "Rain". I'm always disappointed when the great songs & performances that separate Patty from the thousands of other good S/S's , don't get as big a response as the music on "Chief" , "Rain" , & "The Long Ride" do. It's fine music , but it isn't what makes Patty the singular phenomenon that she is. As the tour progressed , that too loud & too fuzzy- sounding drum pedal , seemed to gain favor , & the end of the tour seemed to be marked by a proliferation of unnecessary guitar melodies. Most experimentation should be limited to the early stages of a tour. All of this , of course , is merely my opinion , I am not trying to present it as fact , but flame on if you must. Ain't nothing left at all In the end of being proud Patty Griffin "The Long Ride" Don ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 Sep 2002 06:29:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Ronni Heggen Subject: Re: MM: Minneapolis i was in one of those reserved tables up on top in minneapolis and at first was pissed off because we were supposed to be in front of the stage but they stuck so many tables in that our table was in the corner and behind the stage. we did get to see when Patty was talking to the band though and the sound up there was great--just a couple of loud mouthed yaps but they took the hint with a couple of dirty looks.
