I had heard their song "wide open spaces" on a box set I got one Christmas & loved it so much that I picked up Fly & Wide Open Spaces, so I'm a fan. Anyway, It's definitely interesting to hear these Patty songs performed by them... I've never heard anything off of Silver Bell except for "standing" & the title track, but when the Patty songs played there could be no doubt which ones they were, her imprint is so strong & unique. I'm actually much more impressed with the cd as a whole than I really expected- I think it's probably their best effort yet. "a home", "godspeed" and "traveling soldier" are all really beautiful non-Patty songs. It's amusing to me that on a day that saw the release of a new album by my all-time favorite, Aimee Mann, as well as Coldplay, the Dixie Chicks are finding their way into the stereo just as often as "Lost in Space"! take care, rick *look out for me, i seem to be growing better raise high the roof beams* Let's Face It, Kids... rick's webpage *this is my stolen time, my piece of the sky my storyline... my, how it flies..* -tanya donelly ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Aug 2002 10:24:14 -0500 From: "Brooke Saron" Subject: MM: RE: Dixie Chicks:Home Yes, the new Dixie Chicks CD is incredible. It's still got the Chicks' flavor, but their style is somewhat different on this CD. I can almost hear a hint of Nickel Creek and Alison Kraus in some of the songs, but the CD still says "Dixie Chics" all over it. I actually had no idea that they had two Patty songs on the CD until I looked at the liner notes. They're great songs, of course, but the Chicks wrote some incredible songs themselves too. Re: Dave's remark about my being crabby : strange phenomena - whenever I have a long drive , & am pressured to get to the next town , get a room , shower up , get something to eat , & still get to venue early enough for a good seat , every other driver in the country seems to suddenly turn into a moron , along with all the traffic planners. Between sets , I was hoping to get a drink , a cigarette , & a towel. Couldn't have been any better for Patty while performing , but she came through with a great set , "Moon" , "Tony" , "Goodbye" & topping off with "Ruby's Arms". The rest of the set was right in line with them.Great venue , in spite of the lounge singer doing "Hotel California" as though it were elevator music. Looks like a converted mansion. When I left , there was a a lot of lingering on the porch & lawn. Had a burger at Johnny Rocket's across the street , & played oldies on the counter juke box at 5 cents a pop. Noisy venue , but the sound was fine , except that I had a hard time hearing Eliza between songs. The "If it's Tuesday , this must be Belguim" syndrome kicked in when Patty announced that she knew she was near Indianapolis , but that she didn't know exactly where. She had to be informed that she was, in fact , in Indianapolis. After a too long walk in the hot sun , I found refuge in the A/C Outback for the first 3 innings. Giants & Barry Bonds ( booo ! ) fan Dave was the only one to enjoy the game as they unloaded for 6 HRs , including one for Barry ( booo ! ). The evening was much better as Patty delivered another excellent outdoor concert. Set list : Chief Rain The Long Ride Making Pies Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Racing in the Streets / solo Moses / solo Tony Goodbye Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night / Patty & Doug Sweet Lorraine We were up front , but still a long distance away. The stage was huge , & they were probably 10-15 feet back. Then there was a fence another 20 feet or so from the stage. Patty mentioned the fence about midway through her regular set. She said she didn't like it , but that she was sure there was a good , safety-related reason for it. After a few minutes one couple got through & stood at the front of the stage. When security took no action to move them , others started straggling up. Finally , the front of the stage was jammed , & I think it made a great difference in the mood of the concert , & probably in the performance of Patty & the band too. It seemed to spark a party atmosphere. I was surprised by the big audience , & big response to Patty. My amateur estimation was about 1-2 thousand. Hartwood Acres is also a pretty long drive out of the city. It seems that 1000 Kisses is getting the word out about Patty around the country. A-3 was there , B-4 was there , but no A-4. After a few anxious moments another table was brought in , & all was well. Apparently , it had been moved while the equipment was being loaded onto the stage. Old home week at the Gem. Ed was at my table , Gene Wendland & his wife were next to us , & Lou Ann was behind us. Also saw Sarah , Lori , & Brad. Met Brad again earlier at a restaurant. He brought five , yes , count 'em , FIVE (5) , Patty virgins with him. Including Emily , who swore to herself that she would not cry , but admitted to breaking down during "Follow Me Home". Patty breaks down them walls. Set list : Be Careful Chief Rain The Long Ride Making Pies The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home / solo Forgiveness / solo Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Top of the World Stolen Car Truth # 2 Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night / Patty & Doug Sweet Lorraine I think the instrumentation peaked awhile ago , but I never find a problem with it when Patty does her solos. When it's just Patty & her guitar , the music often hits that same deep , respondent chord in me as her vocals do. Not just the melody or notes , but the touch , timing & volume seem to fit perfectly with the vocals. Such was the case at the Gem. Her solos were easily the highlight of the night. It was easy to see why Emily's resolve not to cry dissolved.
