Set list : Chief Rain Making Pies Be Careful Long Ride Home Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Poor Man's House / solo The Moon's Gonna' Follow Me Home / solo Truth # 2 Goodbye Stolen Car Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Tomorrow Night Sweet Lorraine Excellent sound at the Whitaker Center. Slightly disappointed that Patty only did a 2 song encore , but another great set overall. Had a little rain before the show , & after "Rain" , Patty mentioned that it seemed strange singing it while the country was having a drought. Didn't have any rain during her long , recent tour. Patty keeps introducing LRH as "The Long Ride". Wonder what's up with that. "Follow Me Home" was the highlight for me. Always like to hear something different , & Patty did a great job on it. Hope that when the official "1000 Kisses" tour is done , that she goes to a more varied set list. She skipped the rousing end of PMH , seemingly b/c she had an eyelash bothering her. When she introduced MM , she said it was for all those computer whizzes out there , then added , "You know who you are". Don't know if it was implication , inference , or a little of both , but I immediately thought of her words in a recent interview with the LA Times. After the interviewer noted that she occasionally tries out a song-in-progress on stage , she replied ; " Unfortunately , as soon as I do that , it's on the internet the next day. It kind of bums me out. It takes the thrill out of it a little bit -- I'm still working on this stuff ! " Don't want to argue with , or distress Patty in any way , but I think she overstates the impact. The music itself is not available to be downloaded from the internet , & only a handful of her biggest fans get the music within a few weeks. Even the treed compilations only reach a few hundred fans. 99% of her fans only know the released music , & what they might see at the few concerts they attend. Some young girl with blue hair opened. Where do they get these people ? : ) In a historic moment , a very nervous Darcie Miner was the first MMer to open for Patty. Some suggest having a shot to calm down before a show , but I think that nervous energy is creative energy , & if you go on with your knees knocking , once you get into the show , the creative energy flows. Opening for Patty , & mentioning that her mom was sitting in the first row , she was very tense , but she delivered a great set , playing through just one little hitch in her 6 song set. Set list : One Big Line He Said Victim Mama Orphan Baby , I Love You "He Said" is my personal favorite , but she knocked out the whole set. Was hoping to hear her do Beth Hart's "Am I the One" , but she was solo , & I imagine she only does it with the full band. I was glad that she was solo , to show off that great voice , with the occasional soft & gentle phrasings unimpeded by the constant volume level of a full band. Darcie's performance stands with the best openers Patty has had. Patty mentioned that there was a full moon when she introed "Follow Me Home" , & it followed me home on the PA turnpike , low in the southern sky , constantly in view from the drivers side window. I have 4 tickets available. They are in the balcony at a table, Row 81, seats 1-4. The cost is $35 each, and includes a $15 voucher per ticket for food or appetizers (no drinks or gratuity). This is the only way that you can get balcony tickets and a table. If anybody wants them, please let me know, as I will be exploring other avenues for selling them or getting a refund next week. I wish I could just give them away, but I can't afford to. TWO CATCHES: 1) Gotta have a copy of the original (I too have the backwrds glitch copy) 2) Gotta have the CDs to be burned by 7/27. So... The offer's out there. Ouch. If she's only singing two songs with the Chieftans (a group I don't know) and tickets for the concert cost between $45-70.00, and since I did just see her solo, I have decided not to go . . . I feel bad, especially since her appearances on the west coast have been all too rare. But ya gotta draw a line somewhere. Keep posting more info on her Chieftan appearsnce--if it turns out she's going to do a full-blown opening, I would change my mind and shell out the dollars. By the way, the venue--Villa Montalvo--is wonderful. Montalvo is an estate that some rich guy left to a foundation dedicated to the arts. The grounds are very nice with a lot of great hiking, and artists are invited to spend months pursuing their work, all expenses paid. Patty will be singing in the Garden Theatre, where all seats are pretty good. Too bad she's not coming by herself. One more thing: As much as I am sympathetic to those of you who complained about Gary's exhortations about getting out to see Patty, I have to say I agree with him. (And we all knew he wasn't really going to burn the tickets, didn't we? Indeed, he gave them to Don to give away.) But his point stands. A person can spend a lifetime making excuses why s/he didn't do something they really wanted to do. I cannot imagine a better time than taking his free tickets and going to see an artist who is "singing for the ages." Sure there are always practical concerns, but it seems that too many of us use practicality to justify decisions that prevent us from "taking flight." As trite as it sounds, life is short and what do you want to remember when you die--one more thing that you did on a dreary work week, or some adventure you took, pursuing the sweet sounds of one of the best singer/songwriters in America? Again, every person has a specific situation that may have prevented taking him up on Gary's offer, but he's right: If you want something enough, you can make it happen. It truly is a matter of desire. Jerry ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jun 2002 01:23:43 EDT From: FlamingRed74@aol.com Subject: MM: Re: Harrisburg A few more things to add to the great Harrisburg reviews already written by Don & Gary: I want to also compliment the sound at the Whitaker Center. Absolutely Gorgeous! Of the many, many places I've been to see Patty play, this may have been the best acoustics & best mix of the band with Patty's voice that I've ever heard. Great work by the sound person! Also, I heard many great reviews from people around town about how gracious & kind Patty's band was to the many fans that got the chance to talk to them. There is a pretty good Patty following in PA, more so towards Philly, but I guess you could say I know pretty many of her in my own neck of the woods here near Harrisburg. I was pretty overwhelmed by SO MANY PEOPLE that I knew all being at the same show, wow! And so many of them got to hang w/Patty's band, but not me!! :-( Don was also right about Darcie hanging with the best of Patty's openers. Most nights Patty's openers are doomed from the beginning. The entire crowd is there dying with anticipation, counting the seconds until the Almighty Patty G appears before their very eyes & pours out her heart & soul for all of us! This usually means that by the 3rd or 4th song of the opening act, we're all being lulled into a semi-day-dreamy state.. & most only end up applauding for the opener out of courtesy. On Monday night the applauses grew more & more appreciative as Darcie was able to show off more and more of her talent. She also, sounded absolutely beautiful on stage at the Whitaker Center. Like Gary said, it was a fine evening with the usual suspects at a Patty show. It's always nice to see Evil, Mrs. Evil, Karla, Holly, etc.. & even Don (but it's better when he DOESN'T beat me at pool!!) ;-) Highlights of the Patty show for me, by the way was hearing "the Moon Follows Me Home" for the 1st time, and also her version of "Tomorrow Night" which was absolutely fantastic. This song is always so old-timey sounding (to quote Patty), & the really breathy parts to the song just come naturally to Patty. On some nights, she does it with a little more flair than others, and it takes the song to a new level. Monday was definitely one of those nights. Doug's guitar playing on Flaming Red was also very cool. He seemed to be going about it more freely, with more improvisation.. & not note for note like on the Cd. I always prefer things (especially more rocking songs) to be more "fly by the seat of your pants", like how he played it on Monday. It adds a little bit more of a rough, "dangerous" feel to a fast/loud song like that. Also, getting to discuss local legends The Badlees with Patty during her set was pretty cool. I first saw & met Patty when she was opening for them all across the country. I believe it was her first BIG tour like that, so it was funny that when I mentioned their name she knew to look right down at me b/c I HAD TO BE the one that just said that! LOL She was SO cute on Monday too.. she's always so elegant looking in her stage clothes, but that smile, when it really shines is the cutest thing anyone could ever see. That's all from me. Sorry for the delayed review! Dave ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V6 #243 *********************************
