When I went back to the parking lot next to the Showbox to get something from the car , THE BUS was there. Set list : Chief Rain Long Ride Home Making Pies Be Careful Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Poor Man's House Top of the World Truth # 2 Stolen Car Goodbye Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night Dirty Old Town / Patty & Michael Fracasso Mary / Patty & Eliza Another great show , another enthusiastic audience. Seems that Patty's audiences have been steadily growing in size & enthusiasm since I started attending her shows almost 3 years ago.TOTW , "Goodbye" , & "Stolen Car" were my highlights. Patty mentioned Mercury in retrograde again. The last few stops of a tour must be tough. She also complained a little about so much tuning during a show , saying being slightly out of tune was fine with her , but she does it out of respect for the musicians accompanying her. Must be why she says "tuney-schmooney" so much. She went on to say that some rock groups used to play great music when they were too wiped out to tune anything. While in line , another fan told me that Patty's opener , Eliza Gilkyson , was even better than Patty - ( eye roll ) , "Oh really ? " , was my response. He sat a few seats from me , so after Eliza's set , I went to him & said "She's damn good , but she's no Patty Griffin". She was damn good. Good enough that I got 2 CDs b/c , after about 70, 000 miles of the same music , I was ready for something new. The CDs didn't do her live show justice , though. With 1400-some miles to Boulder I tried the radio & heard a few songs that were worth the trouble , but mostly got crap & static. Even listened to a few preachers for awhile. One clarifying the difference between good & evil , & the other telling me exactly what I have to do to enter the kingdom of heaven. If it were only so. The relaxing music of Astrud Gilberto , & then the inspiring music of Peter , Paul & Mary , & Yes finally pulled me out of my musical funk. Eliza , like Michael , is one of Patty's Austin homies.Seems that Patty might be choosing her openers a lot of the time. If so , she has excellent musical taste , but I guess that's pretty much stating the obvious. Darcie Miner coming up. Love comes to you And you follow Lose one On to the Heart of the Sunrise Anderson / Squire / Buford "Heart of the Sunrise" Performed by Yes Don ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2002 04:10:12 -0400 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Boulder MMers , Picked up Patty's bus a few miles outside of Boulder , & assuming they knew where they were going , didn't have to stress over directions.Bus driver did an excellent job of parking in a small space , in spite of the moron who kept trying to swing around him as he was maneuvering. Set list : Chief Rain Long Ride Home Making Pies Be Careful Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Poor Man's House / solo Forgiveness / solo Truth # 2 Nobody's Crying Stolen Car Tony Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night / Patty & Doug Mary Patty broke a string on "Goodbye" , ( no sleeve ) & didn't continue. I was disappointed until she replaced it with "Nobody's Crying". Patty's consistent performance level is such that my favorite shows are determined more by the songs she does than by performance level. While her level does tend to vary somewhat from song to song , it usually balances out over a full set. There are about 10-12 songs that Patty does every night or almost every night , & I'm amazed that I never find any of them tiring. I enjoy hearing them live , time after time. I don't think I've mentioned yet that Patty doesn't play on "Tony" , "Let Him Fly" , "Mary" or "Ruby's Arms". The Boulder crowd was very enthusiastic with more sing-a-longs than usual.Opener was Liza Oxnard. Good , but not at the level of the other openers. Might have thought about staying 12 days to catch Snoop Dogg , but he was sold out : ) He was in the 'Burg last night , but I had my reviews keeping me busy. Next stop , Harrisburg , for Patty & Darcie. Ain't nothing left at all In the end of being proud Patty Griffin "Long Ride Home" Don ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 15 Jun 2002 11:58:10 -0500 From: "Rob Hanning" Subject: MM: What's up w/ the St. Louis show? Just ordered my ticket for the show at The Pageant from TM yesterday, and now this morning their site says that tickets are "currently not on sale". I don't think it would be sold out already, since yesterday I got an orchestra seat. From http://www.thepageant.com/calendar.html - "Due to scheduling conflicts, this show has been cancelled. Refunds will be available at point of purchase." Sucks, don't it. And thanks to Ticketmaster's wonderful policy, you're still out 20%-40% (depending on whether you got the in person or went through phone/internet) of the face price of the ticket, since only the $20 face is refundable, not the $4-$8 handling charge. Actually, depending on whether she was planning on playing with a band or not, it could be a blessing if it winds up being rescheduled at another venue. Soundwise, The Pageant is passable for solo artists, but has to be the hands-down winner for "Worst Sounding Venue Built Within The Last 5 Years" as far as full bands go. Funny how humanity has been capable of building good sounding theaters for literally hundreds of years now, yet can still manage to screw it up. bob ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V6 #232 *********************************
