Spent almost an hour walking around in the hot sun , trying to find the will-call entrance.Lots of big & familiar names. Patty was not among the 15 or so whose names were in caps. Set list ; Long Ride Home Making Pies Chief Rain Flaming Red Sweet Lorraine Tomorrow Night Mil Besos Top of the World By the time Patty took the stage around 6 , the sun was going down , & a strong , cold wind was blowing. Patty had a short jacket on , but was still shivering. Between the cold & the many sound problems , I think the show qualified as this year's "set from hell". Patty asked if we were sure it was Birmingham , b/c it felt like Anchorage. First thing that happened when she tried to start was a huge POP ! from the speakers. She tried to start with "Chief" 3 or 4 times , but her guitar pick-up wasn't working , & she finally went to another guitar , & started with LRH. When she went back to "Chief" , she had problems again , & let out a long , low-volume scream.. aaaaaahh ! She was shivering throughout , & put her hands in her sleeves while she was introducing the rest of the ensemble. The relative volume levels of the instruments were uneven throughout , & her S's were very sharp , loud , & hissing. She seemed a little hoarse during the bluesy opening for FR , but I think it added a little edge to the song. Otherwise , Patty's performance in the terrible enviroment was up to her usual high standards. I'm sure the rest of the ensemble did fine also , but the tech problems affected their overall sound. Heard a few fine acts before Patty came on , but left when she finished b/c I was too cold , in spite of having a jacket on. I was able to snag them from both stores within reasonable distance of my home (100 miles). If any of you have seen it, then you know what it looks like. It's basically the ad that was in the issue of No Depression that had the Patty article in it, except that it's in color (assuming you've seen the ad). At the top, it has a picture of Patty lying on a quilt in a yellow spotted dress. It has quotes (which I've seen posted to the list) about Patty from Dave Matthews, Emmylou Harris, Steve Earle, Lucinda Williams, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. It's laminated, 8 3/4 x 11 1/4, with a cardboard easel on the back. If you would like to see a picture, email me privately, and I'll send you one ASAP. ...... In exchange, I'd like to have a copy of Silver Bell, or whatever someone would like to trade for the display. I have LFML, but if there's any other neat stuff out there, well...let me know, and I'll swap with whoever has the most appealing package...... Email me if you would like the display, and what you could trade for it. Thanks for your time. Set list : Chief Rain Long Ride Home Making Pies Be Careful Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Poor Man's House / solo Little God Truth # 2 Top of the World Stolen Car Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night Mary Main thing I remember is "Little God". I was happy to hear her start into it , but it was very subdued , & she even replaced the powerful ending with some la-la-la's. It just didn't have the conviction that's a hallmark of Patty's performances. I was thinking that perhaps it was a song she had written with someone in mind , & she had mellowed towards whoever it was. If that's the case she could always direct it towards those "Little Gods" that are ever with us , shaking their little fists , & stamping their little feet b/c others don't recognize their imagined superiority. The rest of the set was up to Patty's usual standards. I was about to make a note about Patty not breaking any strings (that I recall) since she first started wearing her leather half-sleeve on her right arm , when she broke one during PMH. It seems there's a connection there , b/c she used to break 1 or more almost every night. The audience was not one of the better ones , with a lot of talking , & one girl in front spending half the concert on the phone. That must be an encouraging sight for a performer. As I was heading for Santa Fe , & morning revealed panoramic vistas of West Texas & New Mexico , Kansas' "Song for America" came on. I felt it appropriate to let it play for an hour or so. Walking down the street in Austin with "Ruby's Arms" in the air was a singular moment. Listened to the rest of the sound check inside , & got in line. Met Paula , a big Patty Griffin & Moody Blues fan , who I also met in line at the Mercury. Michael Rrrramos noticed me & came over to chat for a bit. Hope that by now , I've allayed any concern that I'm some kind of a wacko stalker. Just a ordinary , everyday wacko : ) Also met up with Amber again , who had her husband with her this time. Michael Fracasso is standing the test of time , as his voice sounded like an old friend when he came on. The opener was Son Y No Son , (I hope that's right , I didn't write it down) a Latino group that included Michael Ramos. They were fine musically , but not my favorite style. Being largely lyric-oriented , I would have liked to know what they were saying. I have been trying to hunt down that version of "Hallelujah" for a number of months now. I gave up. But this is it ! I heard it during an episode of SCRUBS on TV, it was a very sad, but defining moment, on an otherwise funny television show. Very haunting version. (note - I haven't heard Jeff Buckley's version, but I will try to listen to it) Funny how these things just turn up. After "Forgiveness" she said that this is where they start making things up. When she came out for the 2nd encore , she said they had to get up at the crack of dawn to head for CA. The "crack of dawn" being about 11 am for her. Stopped in Phoenix & had a great night out with Jen Powelson (Mystchif ). Set list : Chief Rain Long Ride Home Making Pies Be Careful Flaming Red / Patty & Doug Poor Man's House / solo Top of the World Truth # 2 Goodbye Ruby's Arms Mad Mission Mil Besos Encore Let Him Fly / Patty & Doug Tomorrow Night / Patty & Doug Sweet Lorraine 2nd Encore Mary I do recall that having "Ruby's Arms" follow "Goodbye" was my peak experience at the Belly-Up. "Tomorrow Night" is a song where her performance range is wider than most. Some nights it's merely good to excellent , & other nights her intensity & sensuality keep you locked into it for every word & every note. This was one of those nights , & as often happens when she stuns the audience with a great version of it , the applause starts slowly , & builds up to an ovation that rewards the performance rather than being for an encore. "Mary" also has a wide range , but it seems that the music usually doesn't recapture that haunting sound that it used to have , which is so complementary to her vocals in the song. It's been awhile since I've heard a version that matches the early ones. Opener was Maia ( my-ah ) Sharp. Excellent all around , but I especially liked her soulful clarinet playing , & exceptional lyrics. She also opened in LA , & I think in SF. Now I'm living in a tinder box Hosing down the roof It's raging all around me And I still refuse to move There's a lesson I'm desperate to learn Willing to burn Maia Sharp "Willing to Burn" Don ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V6 #230 *********************************
