I am simply saying that 1000 kisses does not exploit these talents and the supposedly sympathetic record company situation as much as it could. The fact that her management seems to think that the USA is the only part of the world that matters means that we will probably never hear her live and only hear the majority of her mind blowingly awesome songs via LFML. Hearing 1000 kisses, reading thousands of gig reveiews and knowing that there is not a snowball in hell's chance of ever hearing "Made of Clay", "off You go" or "you don't have me" anywhere other than on LFML is soul destroying, like a starving man watching food being destroyed under his nose. I wanna celebrate this joy by offering some freebies to my friends on the Patty list. So email me off list at Mooodeee@aol.com and I'll send you some Libby. - - Mimi PS: here's a press release about miss libby kirkpatrick: - ------------------------ "Libby Kirkpatrick uses her intricate, melodic guitar playing as a tool to help expand her bewitching singing and wide vocal range an honest, sorehearted tone." For fans of Fiona Apple, Rickie Lee Jones" Brenda Linguiti, CMJ New Music Report "A&R Pick" Winner of the 1999 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Troubador award for vocals and songwriting, Libby Kirkpatrick has signed to record her first studio CD slated for national release in early 2003. She will be debuting on the Heart Music labelan Austin, Texas-based label rooted in jazz who is expanding their roster to include other styles of innovative music. Though not a jazz artist, by establishing herself on a jazz-centric label, and by transcending genres as a uniquely original artist in her own right, Libby Kirkpatrick might be Austins more organic answer to Blue Notes Cassandra Wilson and Norah Jones. Libby has had opening slots for artists such as Acoustic Junction, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Lloyd Cole, Shawn Colvin, Innocence Mission, Richie Havens, Elliot Smith, Chris Whitley, and Victoria Williams. She has performed at a number of prestigious acoustic music venues across the U.S. such as the main stage at Telluride, Folk Alliance, Eddies Attic (Atlanta), Club Passim (Cambridge), The Bitter End (NYC), The Tin Angel (Philadelphia), The Fox Theatre (Boulder), Genghis Cohen (Hollywood), and Cactus Cafi (Austin). Libby Kirkpatrick's self-recorded demo "Songs from the Ether" was awarded "Best Solo Album" in the Female Vocals Category at the Boulder Community Media Awards in 1999. Libby Kirkpatricks highly anticipated CD will be recorded in Austin and released to press, Adult Album Alternative and College radio, enlisting the support of independent promotion, and promises to be an incredible national debut in early 2003. "this is very strong material. Libby Kirkpatrick is good at times very very good, and her voice and songs are solid assets which an album stripped this bare can prove beyond a shadow of a doubt" Music Reviews Quarterly, Fall 1999 "Songs From The Ether" "An extremely powerful singer, songwriter, and guitarist, Libby Kirkpatrick's triple threat is reinforced by her striking presence wide vocal range, serious command of dynamics, a very emotive presentation, she makes some very interesting melodic and rhythmic choices. Refreshingly original Kirkpatrick explores themes of love and life, demonstrating a steady eye for details great and small, and revealing a clear and open heart. Highly recommended!" I love that album because the songs aren't all perfect... because they are so simple... the lyrics are incredible... Personally, while I am into dynamics and power and range, I also love albums that are very subtle... which is why, although I love FR for a lot of reasons, "Living With Ghosts" remains my favorite album PG has done... I gather that you do not care for 1000 Kisses... but anger? I didn't enjoy Flaming Red as much as LWG... but anger certainly never came into the picture. I would agree with your point about artists becoming self-absorbed and putting out lackluster product except for the fact that I don't think Patty could have made a better album. 1000 Kisses is a perfect gem of an album. And for those who complain about the accordion... please :) Just because there's an accordion on there, doesn't make 1000 Kisses a Polka album! :) I love it. It's blends beautifully. Dave ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 3 May 2002 01:22:39 EDT From: MactheMutt@aol.com Subject: MM: 1000 Opinions Just wanted to put 2cents in on this debate...or discussion. Whether or not we individually think Pattys new record is up to par.....is kind of a matter of taste and really doesn't make us more or less of a Patty fan than before. I am a huge Dylan fan. Since High School (in the 70's) I have loved his songs. I think he is more than a songwriter.....I consider him as one of the worlds all time gifted poets, writers and minds. I put him up there with Shakespeare and King David....almost prophetic and definitely genius. But there is more than one Bob Dylan album I have listened to and thought....."what the heck was he thinking?" When he is bad.....he is real bad. I have seen him in concert several times now and clearly remember one of the shows being TERRIBLE. It was right after the thing he did with the Greatful Dead. His band was G.E. Smith and company and they were turned up too loud and the concert sounded like ONE LONG SONG. It was a mess. My point being....you can be crazy about Patty and still not love every little thing she does. Everybody has a bad day now and then. So....if somebody is less than thrilled with Pattys new CD or Concert and opens the topic up for discussion on the Patty discussion board...why does he or she deserve being cussed out via MM or e-mail? Pretty immature. (and I'm still trying to figure out why it's "against Policy" to say Jewel makes me want to barf on MM, but it's OK to call another MM'er a JO {jack off?}, or a Stupid Ass) ------------------------------ End of mad-mission-digest V6 #176 *********************************
