Don just called me, he is on the road again (enjoy Joe's Pub!). He was eating breakfast, reading USA Today Newspaper. And low and behold there is a great review of 1000 kisses on page 10D. I thought I would pass this along, since I do believe that is why Don told me. Hopefully see all you Philly folks on Friday. BTW, I think Darcie will be at the Grape Street Pub, from what I hear she's first so come right after Tower Records. The text of it: Patty Griffin, 1000 Kisses: (3.5 stars of 4) The tokens of affection Griffin offers on her latest outing may be delicate, but they're hardly demure. Sharp edges and dark shadows emerge in these spare, deceptively gentle ballads, which the singer/songwriter and co-producer Doug Lancio recorded at Lancio's home studio in Nashville. New songs such as Rain and Nobody's Crying are so ripe with unfulfilled longing that it's no surprise when Griffin opts to cover Bruce Springsteen's plaintive Stolen Car and drives it home forcefully. Even the slighter material provides a winning showcase for Griffin's classic country-folk voice, an achingly pure soprano that suggests a tangier Emmylou Harris. It's not likely that the haunted, understated passion in these Kisses will seduce many pop radio programmers, but that's their loss. - Elysa Gardner You can read it and other Cd reviews online at http://www.usatoday.com/life/lear.htm Mike ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 09 Apr 2002 09:38:09 -0400 From: "Sarah Stanley" Subject: MM: 1,000 sweet kisses gets the kitty thumbs up Well, my cd came in the mail yesterday (Monday)!!! I didn't get home until late in the evening and when I walked in and saw the mail on the table and a package from musictoday I grinned from ear to ear and shouted "whoo hoo! Patty!!" :) I instantly put it in the player and listened straight thru. Then I put it on again and fell asleep with it. Here's the kicker: my baby kitty (she's 2, not really a baby), Luna, jumped up on the bed, walked over to the side of the bed near the cd player and stared at it with her head cocked. She then laid down, got comfy and fell asleep to Patty's smooth voice with me. Then as I got ready this morning for work I had it playing again and as soon as she heard Patty's voice, she ran in the room and did the same thing. This time she did that cute cat-squinty-eye-like-they're-sleepy thing. IT WAS THE CUTEST!!! Patty is not only a Goddess to us but to the feline world as well! Try it with your furry friends - see what happens! :) Anyhoo...my reaction to the cd??? oh my goddess. it is pure beauty. my only complaint is that i never want it to end and it seems to go by so fast! :( As soon as the last song plays (btw, isn't her voice GORGEOUS when she sings in Spanish!?! I was astounded at how "authentic" she sounded...and so much more sultry!) I play the cd over and over. 10 songs = too short, but oh how lovely those 10 songs are!!!! :) :) :) Blissful Peace, Sarah ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "May you dream you are dreaming in a warm soft bed And may the voices inside you that fill you with dread Make the sounds of thousands of angels instead Tonight where you might be laying your head... It's over before I know it. So I end up playing it twice in a row when I listen to it. But I do that anyway with any new Patty CD. Patty doesn't seem to have any lack of material. I wonder why she didn't put more songs on the CD. It would have been great if Florida and Top of the World were on it. I really love those songs. My favorites from the CD (so far) are Rain, Making Pies, Long Road, and Nobody's Cryin. I can't believe a new Patty CD actually made it out after all this time. Can't wait to see her in May! Hello listee's, I have had several people send me an email asking what type of films to use, etc. Well, I thought I would share what I use when I take 35mm pictures at shows. For color prints, I use Fuji/Fujicolor Superia X-TRA 400, 800, and 1600 speed color print films. You can find this film at several retail locations such as Target, and most professional camera shops stock this film as well. The speed of film you want to use depends on where you are sitting in the venue, and it depends on whether or not you are using a zoom camera. If you are at the back of the venue using a zoom camera, I would use 1600 speed film. If you are in the middle of the venue to the front of the venue, I would use 800 speed film. If you have the opportunity to get near the stage, I would use 400 speed film. The closer you get to the stage the slower speed you will want to use. If you ever decided to blow up your pictures to 8x10, etc, you will appreciate using the slower speeds when you are closer to the stage. Your pictures will not look as grainy. So, if you are not sure where you are going to be in the venue, sticking with 800 speed won't hurt. It will pretty much guarantee you will get some good shots. For black and white prints, I use Kodak's Professional T-MAX 400 Black and White Film. You can find this film at several retail locations such as Target, and most professional camera shops stock this film as well. I have normally gotten awesome results with this film. They do offer faster speeds in this series, but I have always gotten better results with the 400. The only thing you have to be careful is where you take this film to be developed. This film cannot be developed at your typical one-hour photo place. Most retail locations have to send this film off, but it is generally worth the wait. Just be sure that the clerk doesn't confuse your black and white film with color film. Otherwise, you will not get any of your pictures back. The quality of your pictures depend on the type of camera, the lighting, and a few other variables. If you have a light pointing directly at your camera, you will not want to take a picture. You will need to either move, or if the lights are moving around, wait for them to point down towards the stage or away from your lens. Also, make sure your flash is turned off. Using a flash doesn't help with the quality of the picture, and it totally screws up the stage lighting effects and natural lighting in the venue. Plus, if you are up close, it will bleach Patty so she looks like a ghost, and it gives Patty and the band headaches that they don't need. Well, I wish everyone luck in capturing moments from the concerts you will attend. Just remember to listen and enjoy the concert as well. I know of some people that are so busy trying to get pictures that they never get to enjoy the concert. Patty and the band seem to be having fun so far this tour. I think this will be a great tour. I look forward to seeing everyone's pictures from future shows as well as hearing reviews of how the concerts went. Take care and safe travels. - - Sanders Note: The pictures that I took at the 3rd and Lindsley show that are posted on my website were actually taken with a digital camera. I took those pictures with a Canon PowerShot S110 Digital Elph (http://www.powershot.com/powershot2/s110/index.html). I set the flash to off and set the white balance to automatic. I will post my 35mm shots from the show and aftershow in the next day or so. I just have not had the time to scan them yet. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Apr 2002 11:56:41 -0500 From: "Sanders" Subject: MM: Tour Merchandise If ATO Records starts providing tour merchandise for Patty this tour, would someone be kind and inform the list of such articles. A price list and item description would be grand. Thanks in advance. - - Sanders P.S.- Does anyone have any details on Patty's schedule in Louisville, KY next Tuesday? I am planning on driving up for that show, and I have heard that she is doing some radio and in-store performances in Louisville. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Apr 2002 13:29:18 EDT From: Robfouch@aol.com Subject: MM: extra ticket for tonight Hi, guys. At the last minute a friend backed out of going to see Patty tonight, so I have an extra ticket. $25. If anyone's interested, you can call my cell phone. The number's 631-664-6850. And I have a reservation for dinner at 6:30, so you're welcome to sit with me and my friends. Anyway, give me call and I can leave the ticket at will call. It'd be a shame for the ticket to go to waste. By the way, the interview with Patty yesterday went great. She's somewhat reserved, as most of you would probably expect, but very sweet and articulate. She put me at ease right away. It was a wonderful experience. I'll let you know when the piece is running. Not sure myself at the moment. Well, I'm outta here. On my way to the city to go to the in-store appearance. see ya. Rob ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 9 Apr 2002 14:57:53 EDT From: Kaycee973@aol.com Subject: MM: mm: 1000 kisses RULES!!!!!
