So I was just talking to my friend Nancy Micciulla (fellow MMer) who is a brilliant singer/songwriter from Rehobeth Beach, DE. She has the most beautiful, sweet voice & the most heartfelt lyrics this side of Austin, TX. :-) Anyway, it has always been the biggest desire in my life to be able to do the things that people like Nancy, Patty, etc.. do.. and make it my living. Man.. I can write good songs (lyrically), but I'm so damn jealous of that awesome quality that they have that I don't. The ability sing with such passion, such beauty, & to sing those words that touch people so deeply. They can literally change the world by just opening their mouths, it's amazing. Often times I wonder how much they appreciate their talents, or realize how lucky they are. Not that they don't work at what they do (I realize there is work involved). I'm always complemented on my good qualities, kindness, generosity, thoughtfullness, etc.. but most times I swear I would trade in each and every one of those for what these people have. I would be the dirtiest, most rude person in the world (imagine Evil Gary Magnified to the 10th power), trust me if I could sing like these people. LOL When I first heard Nancy sing, it was a little over 4 years ago now (or has it been 5 years..??). I just remember hearing how beautiful her voice was, and immediately having the overwhelming urge to make it MY mission for as many people hear how beautiful her songs were. I had the same feeling when I heard Patty, but she already had management, a record label etc.. so I could do little more than tell all my friends about her. I would almost KILL to have a voice that could touch people like either of these 2 women. The help & promotion I did for Nancy in the months following hearing her was partially out of kindness, and partially out of a burning desire to give something beautiful onto the world (musically), even if it was not coming from within me. So, Russ.. I want to personally thank you for starting what has become for me, one of the best & most thought provoking threads that I've ever read here on the MM list. It really made me think about things, & the reason I want to do the things I do for musicians. I always knew that I wanted to share their songs, their words, their voices.. but it now seems to me that it's partially out of this jealousy of NOT being able to accel at something for the 1st time in my life. Everything I've ever wanted to do well, I've done. I just don't have the ear, or the voice for singing, & it KILLS me. When I hear someone who touches me deeply, I NEED to pass that beautiful feeling I feel when I listen to them onto someone else. Ok, I'm done now.. :-) For some reason I just had to share with you guys, & maybe some of you even feel the same way.. ?? Please feel free to reply, and maybe share your feelings on why you admire certain singers so much. Or whether you all have wanted to help an amazing singer/songwriter so much that you went above and beyond the call of duty to make their voice heard. Share what you did, and why you did it, why that certain person touched you.. etc. If any of you are interested by the way.. Nancy Micciulla's website is at www.paperwings.de Nancy, if you're out there & read this.. please post the link to your new site with the new MP3's please. :-) Dave p.s. Gary, I was ONLY KIDDING about you.. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002 22:37:13 EST From: Gashlycrumb@aol.com Subject: MM: Alana Davis, Ryan Adams, others... To the one asking of Alana Davis. It is worth the $15 to get her FIRST cd. She covers the Ani song, 32 Flavors. Plus.. there are a lot of excellent songs on that cd. Her newer one did very little for me. Go w/ the first one. >smile< I finally bought the Ryan Adams cd. I am amazed. I was unaware of him. I knew he was w/ Whiskeytown, but never heard them. He had a solo cd. Heard the song to be sad is to be young, it to be high.. or something like that. And, loved it. NOw, over a year later.. I bought Gold. Very enjoyable. Also.. can anyone recommend any NEW singer/songwriters? I'm coming up empty. I feel as though I have come to an end.. a drought in music available. Any help? ONE MORE WEEK until new Patty. >smile< Matthew. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Apr 2002 22:57:05 EST From: Tricia9999@aol.com Subject: Re: MM: Alana Davis, Ryan Adams, others... For those of you familiar with The Ark, YES! Dar played the Ark -- can you believe it!? I mean, last time she was here she played the Michigan Theatre -- much bigger. So this was SO intimate and was just Dar and her guitar. Okay, well...I'm sure you're all well aware that I'm planning on gushing and gushing over the show. I'm too tired and have too big a migraine (stress-related,not at all to do with Dar) to go into great detail. She tried out a new tune on us that she kept forgetting the words to but it was SO great. It was called "Your Fire, Your Soul", I think. She said she didn't plan on recording it cuz it sounds too mean but after she played it we all screamed "record it!" :) She also reminicsed about how when she first played the Ark it was opening for Ani Difranco and how she was REALLY nervous. Apparenly playing that new song for us brought back some of the old anxiety. :) She, of course, did the songs we could sing along to (though stressed that they were NOT 'sing-alongs') and she did TWO encores! She is just the cutest thing ever... BUT - I was completely unaware of her opening act. I didn't even know if she was going to have one. Then I went out to the merch table before the show and saw they were selling Kris Delmhorst stuff and asked if she was opening. Indeed, she was! I was so excited! I have to admit, I heard a song here or there but had never really LISTENED to Kris. Tonight changed everything and immediately after her set I went out and bought "Five Stories" and a 7-song live EP that we got for $5 instead of $7 if you bought the other, called "Oddlot" ;) So THANK YOU to all you MMer's who've been suggesting her over and over and who sing her praises. She is fabulous and I'm so glad Dar chose to bring her along this tour. :) Okay, Patty content: I got that same message about a back-ordered CD from musictoday.com - I'm glad that someone has confirmed it's a canned message. I was a little worried too! Of to bed with DAR-ling dreams..... sigh. Sarah ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "I dont want to be a jet airliner, I just want to be a little bird I dont want to rip the skies wide open, I just want my song to be heard And I dont want to be state of the art, I dont want to get there overnight I just want to be part of all this beauty, Want to be part of all this flight on little wings" -- Kris Delmhorst _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Apr 2002 00:48:22 -0500 From: Jennifer Caputo Subject: MM: Patty broadcast live this week!
