MMers & rICH , If you want to buy from someone who REALLY cares about promoting Patty's career , Corey has aleady suggested using Jen's link from her new site. You can link to CDnow from the discography or the news section that comes up first , where she has a link for "Evangeline Made". She gets 6% of whatever you buy for 2 hours after you use the link. I'm sure that Jen has put in 100's of hours , & no small amount of money into the site already , & I'll be doing all of my buying thru her link from now on. A good initial spurt of sales from CDnow may also garner some attention from the powers that be in the industry. I'm puttiing my order in as soon as I'm done here. But he can do wrong. Ohhhh, can he. Like campaigning endlessly for the enviroment, and then not only letting his song be used for a car advert, but even APPEARING in the advert, singing the song and driving the car. And joining in the high-publicity re-launch of the Concorde, which uses up more fuel than any other airplane. Somehow, this doesn't tally with his "greener than thou" approach, does it? Aaron hit the nail on the head -- fanship doesn't mean blind adulation. I've come a cropper on many fanlists by daring to suggest that the newest releases aren't necessarily the best. adam k. I have to chime in - I'm all for using whatever c.d. purchase method is readily available - online, indies, chains, etc. But I have to tell you that Best Buy IS where I discovered Patty Griffin on a listening bar display and as soon as I bought "Living With Ghosts", I was fortunate enough to see PG in concert at a small nightclub (in St. Louis, MO) for the whopping ticket price of $6!! PG took to the stage with her guitar and proceeded to give one of the best live shows I have ever seen (25 years of experience!) - so, let's not rule out any outlet. Waiting for 4/9 and the accompanying tour dates - Teri - -----Original Message----- From: Richard Challen [mailto:rchallen@mindspring.com] Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2002 9:36 PM To: mad-mission@smoe.org Subject: MM: Why Is Everyone Against Real Music Stores?? Just my own 2 cents, but... WHY would you NOT go to a good, local, independent music store and BUY the Patty Griffin album on April 9th? (All of you who live in the boonies with one stoplight and one gas station are forgiven.) Do you REALLY think Amazon.com cares about promoting Patty's career? Nah, they just wanna sell as much stuff as possible to keep from going bankrupt like the rest of the dot.coms. Then again, for that matter... Best Buy isn't in the habit of developing artists' careers. And you're right, they won't have Patty at $11.99 on April 9... They might not even stock it. And Tower Records' prices are super high because they're about to go bankrupt themselves. For everyone who realizes that sales tax is still a LOT cheaper than Internet "shipping & handling charges," or who thinks $25 is too much to pay for one CD (even overnighted), please check out this site: http://www.cimsmusic.com/ That's right, there are nearly 100 stores in the Coalition of Independent Music Stores. I work at one of them, Manifest Discs & Tapes in Charlotte, NC. Before that, I ran the one in Clemson, SC, where my good friend Joel first turned me on to Patty (back when HE was running the store). We probably sold over 200 copies of "Living With Ghosts" over the years... and this was a store where a HUGE seller (like Dave Matthews) sold about 600 copies and a Britney or N'Sync was lucky to sell 50 copies TOTAL. You can still walk into any Manifest in the Carolinas and buy LWG for $9.99. Beat that, Amazon. Currently, the CIMS stores try to promote up-and-coming artists every month. This month, it's Kasey Chambers... But everybody from Wilco to Ben Harper to Lucinda Williams to Moby had their day in the sun as well. Last month, John Mayer was one of our featured artists... This guy has yet to crack the Hot 100 but our store in Charlotte has been selling 20+ copies a WEEK since October and "Room For Squares" is perpetually in our Top 10. (At a sales price of $6.99, I might add!!) Do you think radio notices this? Do you think his record company notices this? You think Rolling Stone giving him a 4-star review just HAPPENED, or was it because of sales stories like this one across the country? Yeah, I know, any Patty sale is a good sale. But remember that 100 sales in one week doesn't make a dent in Amazon's weekly sales chart, but 100 sales of "1000 Kisses" would put Patty #1 at almost any indie store in the country. If you're anywhere near one of those 100 CIMS stores, I would recommend going there and picking up "1000 Kisses" on April 9, the first legal day of release. I betcha we have it on sale for $11.99, too. :^) see ya, rICH Listen to Rich: Check out the official website of Backyard Green, featuring tour dates, lyrics, pictures, and sound clips from the new album: http://www.backyardgreen.com And be sure to check out Rich's solo website at: http://listen.to/rich.com http://www.geocities.com/richardchallen ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 27 Feb 2002 10:36:59 -0500 From: "Don Henn" Subject: MM: Patty on Ticketbastard Anyone able to get tix for Somerville theater , April 26 ? I got on TB at 10:20 , & got an "unable to fufill your request" message , as though they were sold out. The very nice young woman there took a look, and related that she gets the same message that we all got. I don't believe it. If any Boston area lister is getting tix & would risk trusting me , I'd be grateful to pay for 2 tix , even if I'm able to get my own in the interim. Maybe it's better now that she belongs to a musician's label. Until she can sell her stuff from her own website, she will never make much on the sale. She'll make it from concerts. So, pay $6 or pay $18. She won't realize much from it because she doesn't have the capital invested in it. Her label does. Maybe Jonatha Brooke and Ani DeFranco should write books on how to do it all your self. That's where the money is, and that's where the freedom is. jiswa ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO!
