(Great performance from Mr. Gray, but I digress.) On the sampler is the studio version of "Chief," which is supposed to appear on "1000 Kisses" in "early 2002." Yes, we've heard these rumors before, but this time I believe 'em. Dunno what the tracklisting is going to be--"Top Of The World," "Truth #2," "Perfect White Girls" and other "Silver Bell" numbers, maybe?--but if the whole album has the same sound as "Chief," this may be the Patty release we've all been waiting for. Great Americana production, largely acoustic, and full band backing that complements rather than overwhelms. And the focus is where it should be: squarely on Patty's voice. The arrangements of "Flaming Red" plus the intimacy of "Ghosts"... what more do you want?? "Chief" wasn't one of my faves in concert, but the studio version is bang-up. Looks like early signs are very promising!!
