Had a great time at the show last night. I got a treat in seeing Steve Earle for the 1st time. What an amazing songwriter! For the Patty segment of the show. She played Thruth #2, Be Careful, & a stunning version of Mary which has now taken on all new meaning to me after the passing of my dearly beloved grandmother just last week. Steve did his usual "yikes" at the end of "Be Careful" which drew a big laugh from most of the audience. Before the show, Karla overheard people outside saying something to the effect that "it was going to be a GREAT show, except for this Patty woman who no one knew anything about" LOL!!! Let's just say that after "Mary", there was no one in attendance who DID NOT believe she belonged on that stage with all that amazing talent. She actually got a standing ovation from many in attendance after Mary.. the ONLY standing ovation for anyone after any of their songs as far as I can remember. I thought it was great to see Patty up there with all these other singers/songwriters who have been around for 20 years or more. They all have established themselves as career musicians by having the longevity to stay around & make great music for so long. Patty is up there with this accomplished group after only 2 CD's... :-) It was just nice to see and SO amazing to think that I saw her for the 1st time playing for about 5 people who were actually paying attention way back in '96. Back then I KNEW she was something special, now I just sit back and realize how lucky I was to have "discovered" her way back then. Wow! What are the odds?? Anyway.. I really enjoyed everyone, but have to agree with the Evil One's assessment that Mary Chapin has to have one of the least expressive voices I've heard. She has a very nice voice.. it just seems too monotone at times or something?? Maybe it's just that after hearing Patty, Emmylou, & Nancy Griffith (Patty's long lost relative).. just about anyone's voice outside of Nancy Micciulla & Darcie's voices would sound *Un* Expressvie... or did anyone else have that same opinion as well? I can't really do much of a "review" for the other artists being that I don't know enough about them to feel qualified to write.. but I thought the order in which everyone played was set up nicely. You always had Steve following Patty's sad songs with one of his jokes to lighten the mood a bit. (and to make me stop thinking how much I wanted Patty to just CONTINUE playing). One thing I did notice (& this is starting to become a BIG problem) was Emmylou staring at me again. This seems to be becoming the norm at her shows that I attend. If I wasn't an actual paying customer I'd be starting to think about hiring a bodyguard or something just to make sure she doesn't try anything funny. It was a real shame that Gary was not up there in close enough range of sight for her or she could have been staring at 2 of PA's finest at the same time. :-) Seriously.. it was a great night for a very good cause. Being that I don't keep up with current events and world news as much as I should, I had absolutely no idea that landmines were still such a problem around the world. God Bless Emmylou (& all the artists who participated) for continuing to support such a great cause that has helped so many people. One last thing, according to Patty.. "1000 Kisses will be released on April 9th" Whoo hoo! Now I just need to try not to get TOO excited b/c we all know what happened the last few times we got an "official release date". Not that I want to sound too greedy, but wouldn't it be nice if ATO Records bought the rights to Silver Bell and released it next year as well?? Slammed down a couple quick Black and Tans before the show while visiting with Don, Dave and Karla. Really nice people with a good sense of humor. Karla wore a plaid mini skirt. Her lover's Dave and Don both wore 3 pc. suits and Italian shoes. Very disturbing. Anyway, Emmylou walked on stage and introduced the rest of the players for the night. Steve Earle was his usual self. A great singer songwriter who has been there and back. It shows in his music. Nanci Griffith was about as annoying as I thought she would be. She did do "From a Distance" YAWN! Mary Chapin Carpenter, another truly annoying yahoo who wins Grammy awards with her middle of the road lyrics that leave you feeling like you only ate half your sandwich at lunch. Bruce Cockburn, an incredibly gifted singer and guitar player who is always worth listening to. Emmylou, who was OK. And of course Patty. She played Truth #2, Be Careful, & Mary. The way she and Emmylou faded out at the end of Mary still has the hairs on the back of my neck standing straight up. It's funny to watch Patty, who obviously is still unsure of her place on stage with these other performers. Shy, reserved and just plain the best singer on stage. Time will show her to be the best songwriter out of the bunch as well. And with Earle and Cockburn that is saying something. 1000 kisses APRIL 11!!! Mark your calendars. Can't wait for the tour.
